Picturesque Village House with pool near the Dordogne River
A lovely old stone house in one of the most picturesque villages in France, luxury modernised accommodation with open plan living areas, private swimming pool and private garden.
A lovely old stone house, renovated to a high standard in 2008 revealing original features combined with modern facilities. Wi-Fi available. The property is fully renovated on the upper level only. Access to the entrance is via old stone steps to a glass balcony and seating area. The accommodation comprises:
- Three bedrooms, one double with en-suite, a further double and a twin bed room. Leads up to an open plan living area with modern kitchen, dining area with oak table and chairs and sofas seated around a large stone fireplace with wood burning stove.
- A second balcony with shower room, from which the garden is accessed via stone steps to the rear.
- The outside provides an old stone walnut store which is used as a covered eating area with teak table and chairs. A stone laid patio with sun-loungers leading to the swimming pool at the rear of the garden.
- The garden is in an elevated position with fruit trees and flowers and sloping grassed areas.
- Parking for two cars at the front of house.
The property is situated in the beautiful picturesque village of Carennac, one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' on the banks of the river Dordogne.
A popular tourist village where visitors come to see the ancient Abbey and Cloisters, and to explore the old village. The village has a lovely relaxed charm. A 2*Logis Hotel, small restaurants a new tearoom selling great coffee, cakes a depot du pain and regional products. The tourist office is in the courtyard of the Abbey. In the summer months a farmers market is held one evening a week in the garden of the Abbey.
The general area provides a wealth of activities, many beautiful villages and historic tourist sites.

How to get to Old Stone House in Picturesque Village
- From Calais a driving time of approx 8hrs to the property.
- Rail travel using Euro star, TGV and TER to Brive a La Gaillard, car hire available at the station should be pre booked.
- Recent opening of the Brive a La Gaillard airport in 2010 has more flights available this year from London City Airport (Air France)
- Ryan Air flights opened in 2014 from Stansted, car hire available.

We spent a wonderful couple of weeks in Carennac; the accommodation was very clean and well specced, with a lovely patio area and pool which was very welcome in the over 30 degree heat! Additionally there is an outdoor shaded eating space with views towards the château in the old walnut store, and plenty of space to park. The village is very historic, it is easy to see why it is one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”, and we really enjoyed exploring it. There’s three dépôts de pain (we used Chez Paul), also a bar/épicerie which sells fruit, bread, butter etc., a restaurant/bar and a pizzeria, La Terrasse - highly recommended and just across the bridge from the house. There were also several art and sculpture expos that were open during our stay as well as the château and priory to visit. Nearby we visited the grotte at Lacave which was excellent, and lots of medieval villages, and we spent many hours swimming in the Dordogne. All in all, highly recommended!Guest rating:
We stayed in this lovely house in the heart of Carennac at the beginning of June when the weather was just starting to get warmer. The house is beautifully kept and has everything you need, situated just across the bridge from the Chateau. It not only has a lovely garden area with pool but a enclosed terrace at the front where you can sit. We would highly recommend this house and the village for a relaxing holiday.Guest rating:
We stayed for the first 2 weeks of September and were so glad we chose Gail's Gite, it was fabulous. The location is amazing and the Gite the perfect home from home to spend our holiday. It was so nice to find the cupboards full of various foods and essentials like Salt & Pepper, although we ate out most days rather than cooking as the temperatures were 30 degrees and upwards. This meant the pool at 26 degrees was a very welcome relief at the end of the day after visiting local towns and villages. The Gite was very clean and comfortable and being such an old building by keeping the windows shut stayed relatively cool. All of the locals we met were very welcoming especially Paul & Jason who run the coffee shop Chez Paul. in the village. We had exceptionally good meals at Hotel Fenelon and La Prieure which were also very good value for money. There are a good number of villages and towns within 30 mins of Carennac worth visiting especially Rocomadour, Collonges-la-Rouge, Martel, Loubressac and Autoire. We would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a base to explore real rural France or just a place to relax and take it easy.Guest rating:
The view from this house is stunning - better than the photos would suggest. We often sat in the old walnut store, either to eat or to keep out of the sun, and admire the chateau. The pool is very welcome. The owner had advised us that the level would be a bit low, but we found that it was more than adequate with a bit of topping up. She assured us that the leak would be fixed for the 2023 season. The house has been very tastefully restored to a high standard. It is very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped. The owner’s advice about local facilities was spot on. We dined in both Hotel Fenelon and Le Prieure on her recommendation, and both were excellent quality and value. The Spar supermarket a few miles away provided everything that we needed.Guest rating:
We stayed a week the location is perfect . Small village quiet but with quite a few visitors . Lovely restaurant across the bridge from the house . Lovely relaxing house , very clean and well equipped . Undercover area for eating out perfect for all weather else and views of the village . Lovely pool perfect temp !! We stayed here for a week last August with our two children and loved it. Our first remark was that the photos don't do the house and setting justice. The house was immaculate, modern and beautifully decorated. Next to the garden is a covered terrace that overlooks the bridge, and has the best view in the village in our opinion. We would spend the morning having coffee on the windowed balcony (you can slide the windows open) and then lunch/dinner on the terrace, watching the world go by. The pool was great, the only minor downside (and I'm nit-picking here) is the garden around the pool was small/rocky (so you couldn't have a game of football for example), but our kids didn't care as the pool was more than enough! There are a few restaurants (worth noting that we found many won't allow you to just have a drink), but unusually for us, we chose to stay at home as the setting was unbeatable! Just to the left of the house is a pathway down to the riverside with picnic benches. The village is lovely with a small market each week and close to lots of villages/towns (Rocamadour was c.20 mins away). We had a wonderful, memorable stay. This cottage has the wow factor, it's so full of character. It was really clean, nicely decorated and well kitted out. We felt comfortable from the moment we walked through the door. The view from the covered balcony is perfect, overlooking the medieval village.
The village itself is lovely, very interesting to walk around, with a choice of places to eat. There is no bakery in the village but you can order bread at the friendly cafe "Chez Paul".Guest rating:

We had a very pleasant stay in this charming medieval village of Caranac. The property was a rustic delight overlooking the Abbey. We would highly recommend this to all if you are looking for a relaxing and quiet holiday. Difficult to put in to words - try it, you won't be disappointed.
