Farmhouse with Four Gites and Pool near Mirepoix, Midi-Pyrenees
We have four individual self-catering cottages (gîtes), two with two bedrooms, one with three bedrooms, and one with four bedrooms. The gîtes are set with our home in five acres of the Pyrénéan foothills, bordered by a pretty stream, and benefit from our 10x5m pool, table tennis, table-football, boule court, free wi-fi etc.
Bordeaux is a 4 bedroom cottage adjoining the main farmhouse, sleeping up to 8 people in ensuite bedrooms with its own private garden, patio and barbecue area.
In summer, Bordeaux is available as a four bedroom gite which is ideal for larger families or for two families holidaying together. Outside of the summer season, Bordeaux is also available as a two bedroom gite (using just the ground floor and middle floor). This allows us to offer Bordeaux as a third two bedroom gite alongside gites Languedoc and Loire.
You enter Bordeaux through double French doors, with traditional French shutters, into:
- A large open plan lounge/kitchen/dining room with log-burning stove.
- The fully fitted kitchen benefits from a full sized dishwasher, washing machine, electric double-oven cooker and fridge freezer
- There is also a downstairs wc with washbasin.
- A door leads straight out from the kitchen area to the private garden and patio area of the cottage.
A traditional hand crafted wooden staircase winds up to the ensuite bedrooms above.
- Each ensuite bathroom has a large (120cm) shower, two of the bedrooms have double beds, the other two have twin beds.
- There is also on the first floor an additional bathroom accessible from the landing.
Bordeaux is also centrally heated, which makes it ideal for use all year round and for romantic Winter evenings there is a log-burning stove ready for a roaring fire!
- Table tennis, table football, giant connect 4 in the covered games barn
- Giant chess set
- Boule / pétanque court
- Badminton
- Sand pit for smaller children
We are on the edge of a pretty village, ten minutes from the medieval town of Mirepoix, with its restaurants, cafes, weekly market and summer festivals. Carcassonne, the 3rd most popular tourist attraction in France, is 30 minutes. Our regional leisure lake Lac de Montbel, with 1500 acres of water, beach and restaurant, is ten minutes away. The Mediterranean beaches are one hours drive. The extensive vineyards of the Languedoc are within 30 minutes. Extensive walking, cycling and angling, boating, and horse riding is available 'on the doorstep' in the Pyrenees and the Medieval Chateaux of the Cathars surround the area - Montsegur, the 'last stronghold' is 20 minutes away.
The medieval town of Mirepoix is a tourist gem in the area and we are lucky to be so close. Mirepoix has a 13th century cathedral (with the second widest nave in Europe!), and a timbered 'bastide' square around which there are bars, cafes, restaurants (there are over 20 in the town), boutique shops and the essentials of bakers, butchers, fishmonger and so on. The town has an excellent weekly market on a Monday morning and many events taking place during the summer. It also has a SuperU supermarket and Aldi with everything you need.
We are 10 minutes drive from the largest inland lake in the South West of France - Lac de Montbel is a 1500 acre man-made reservoir created in the 1980's to hold water for refilling the Canal du Midi. The lake provides sheltered and safe conditions for all types of beach activity, it has several beaches, one of which has a lakeside brasserie and a lifeguard in attendance during the Summer. Lac de Montbel also offers a full range of watersports. We are an hour from the Mediterranean beaches.
Our village nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees. 400m above sea level, but with the 3000m peaks 20 mins drive away.
Every active sport you can think of is on the doorstep, from paragliding to hill walking via watersports. The Tour de France passes close by and the area is a favourite for cyclists and mountain bikers. We are an hour from the Mediterranean beaches, and enjoy a mild climate.
For those that prefer a gentler pace, the roads are quiet and the scenery is spectacular - you can tour the mountains from the comfort of the driving seat! We have many driving and walking tours; vineyards to visit; weekly markets; wildlife and wild flowers (esp. the orchids in spring / early summer).
For foodies, Mirepoix (at 10mins) has over 20 restaurants to suit all tastes.

Location is super quiet pastoral, a lovely retreat, yet really easy to get in to the mountains.
The gite itself was well equipped, BBQ, pool, comfortable and charming.
We had a great time, and I think you'd struggle to find a more lovely place to base yourself in the Ariege region.
Things we did:-
climbed Montsegur for fab views and powerful evocation of Cathar history;
gorge walks delivered nature in abundance;
visited the phenomenon of the hourly flash-flooding Fontaine de Fontestorbes, near Lavelanet;
Mirepoix itself of course (lovely) and the nearby church in the rock, at Vals;
the castle at Foix, and also white water rafting, river surfing, and kayaking;
Carcassonne is beautiful, albeit very commercial;
horse riding near the gite, and swimming in the lake.
Some of our party majored on hiking in the Pyrenees, easily accessible for a day trip.
The top spot though, for me, were the the Niaux caves with their 13,000 year old wall paintings.Guest rating:
Mirepoix is a must, especially the Monday market, you need to get there reasonably early to avoid the traffic queueing to get in!
Parcour - We tried 2 venues both excellent for kiids (aged 5 and 7).
1. Le Vernet - D'Art en arbres followed by canoeing La belle vert
2. Parc acrobatique forestiere at Carcassonne. This is situated by Lac de Cavayere where there are lots of different activites to do
We also recommend Lac de Puivert. A little further away than Montbel but a nicer lake. They have a night market on a Wednesday which is worth a visit to see the different food stalls.
We have thoroughly enjoyed the 2 weeks here, L'Enclos is in a great location and Kath and Dave have been fantastic hosts. Very knowledgeable about the local attractions and a great friendly couple.
Thank you and au revoir until next time..... and the kids loved the dogs too!Guest rating:
Carasonne - we started here on the way to Limbrassac. Beautiful castle, choice of restaurants, crafts etc.
Kayaking - We do class 2/3 white water. Alet au vive in ALet les Bains is gr 1/2 on river Aude. Guide Eloi is a national standard canoeist and coach who loves to teach - excellent value. They also do 'hot dogs' also known as Kayak gonflable.
Climbing - We climb 4-6 grades. Enjoyed Roquefixade very much. Choice of climb, good views, some shade. Enjoyed piscine at Ax les Thermes short walk in, choice of grade. Went to Calames at Bedheilhac nr Tarascon. Long walk in and found site map hard to follow. Dreuilhe nearest climb is railway cutting near Lavelanet. Easy access. Good for quick climb but limited.
Mountain bikes / Road cycling.
ROAD Lots of cols to climb, Montsegur, Mont D'Olmes. Plenty towards Ax les Thermes. Flatter local roads.
MB Used Montbel lake route. For downhill mountain bikers Ax Les Thermes lifts are good but grades were tough.
Sailing
No windsurfers at Montbel this year but had quiet sail in Catamaran and saw Egrets.
Trail running
Great opportunities and plenty of hills. Use serie bleu maps.
Lake swimming
Montbel is clean and not too cold.
Wildlife
Have seen:-
Mink - whilst Kayaking
Pine Marten - Nr Montsegur
Eagle
Egret
Adder
Squirrel - Red squirrel
Interesting spiders
Lots of butterfliers
Bats
Walks guides in folder are a good basis.
Enjoyed Gorge de Pereille
