Salies de Béarn is a delightful Béarnaise spa town with winding lanes and flower decked houses. It is known as the Venice of the Béarn because of the way the houses overhang the river on stilts. The River Saleys runs through the middle separating the old medieval town from the Thermal Baths where you can enjoy spa treatments and bathe in water that is full of minerals and 10 times saltier than the sea. The thermal bath is wonderfully relaxing and features a variety of massaging water jets. The town has been famous since the Middle Ages for its salt. According to the legend, the salt was discovered when a fatally wounded wild boar escaped from a hunt. It was discovered sometime later perfectly preserved by the salt in a marsh. Salt became the most important part of the Salies economy and the best Jambon de Bayonne was always made using Salies salt. The long history of Salies is presented in the town’s two museums, the Musée de Sel and the Museum of Arts and Local Traditions. Walking tours of the medieval town’s history are available from the tourist office.
Our house is a few minutes walk from the centre of Salies. You will be delighted by this small country town catering for a local population of about 5000 people. Salies can provide for all your everyday needs, including a supermarket, a complete range of small shops, numerous restaurants and bars, a garage and petrol station and a weekly market. There is also a casino.
Biarritz and the Atlantic Coast are 45 minutes by car with excellent beaches and surfing. The Pyrenees and Spain are approximately 1 hour away. Nearby there are stunning walks, golf in Salies, white water rafting and many interesting Béarnaise and Basque towns and villages to discover.
Nestled in the Bearn between the Atlantic coast and the Pyrenees, this area has so much to offer whether you prefer beach holidays or countryside and there are too many places of interest to mention.
The lovely coastal resort of Biarritz and the safe family beach at St Jean de Luz are within easy driving distance. Beautiful Bayonne with its twin spires and Basque architecture and the Bearnaise capital, Pau, are about 40 minutes away. The Pyrenees with beautiful scenery are 1 hour away. We would recommend the Gorges d’Holcarte and the Gorges de Kakouetta or the Petit Train d’Artouste, which takes you high into the mountains. Or pop over to Spain for shopping or to visit the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao.
Closer to home there are a golf course and public tennis courts in Salies de Bearn.
Nearby Sauveterre de Bearn (10 minutes drive) offers white water rafting.
Markets selling fresh local produce are held in all the surrounding towns and there is plenty of delicious local food and wine to be discovered.
During the summer months the local Fetes are an experience in themselves and the local game of pelote basque is an exciting spectator sport not to be missed.

Our party of 5 adults had a week's stay in Villa Monplaisir. It is a very spacious property, both inside and out, with all the quirkiness of an old, French farmhouse, which has been extended at various stages in it's history. We visited in June, during the mini heatwave, and were extremely grateful for the lovely pool area and the many fans. Salies-de-Bearn is a lovely little town with several restaurants, bars and shops. The Thursday market is definitely worth a visit, as is the Monday market in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, about 45 minutes drive away, for delicious local produce. The house is a great base from which to explore the area. We even went to San Sebastian in Northern Spain for the day, about 1 hour 30 mins drive away. Susan, the owner, was exceptionally easy to correspond with, and Mme Jane Sully, who lives locally, was really helpful with checking in etc. and gave us lots of useful information about the area. We would highly recommend Villa Monplaisir.Guest rating:
Group of 12 adults stayed at this lovely house and could not of wanted for anything more. Lots of space inside, never rented a house before that had a kitchen so well equipped! Bedrooms were all good with the added bonus of en suites to nearly all the bedrooms Lots of outside space, beautiful pool area, very private considering only a few minutes walk into the village Salies is a lovely village, nice restaurants, supermarket etc Men in the group played 3, 18 hole golf courses and all were excellent within a 30 min drive. Susan the owner was extremely helpful as well as Mme Scully who greeted us at the house We attended the Salt festival whilst we were there and had a fantastic time! Overall if you want to experience staying in a lovely french village in a ' quirky' house with lots of charm then Villa Monplaisir is the placeGuest rating:
We have stayed at this property twice now and are already booked in for our third visit next year! That says it all really - once we found here we couldn't think of staying anywhere else. It is a wonderful and really unique property - quirky and fun and so relaxing - we feel at home from the moment we arrive. The house is huge (as is the garden) but still homely, the games room a boon and the swimming pool ideal and always so clean. There are always places to sit in sun or in the shade and umpteen places to eat or drink and while the days away - yet with the delightful little town of Salies just on the doorstep! If you are looking for modern and pristine, this is not the place for you, but if you want a sense of history and real homeliness, you cannot do better than to stay at Monplaisir. I wish I could say something bad about this property to put other people off finding this delightful gem - but alas there just isn't!Guest rating:
