A spacious holiday home that is ideal for a group of friends and for family celebrations. Comfortably sleeps 8
A 19th century, typically French Maison de Maitre country house, Maison Metcalf is perfectly positioned as an ideal base from which to explore the breath-taking scenery and diversity of south western France. The high ceilings, exposed oak beams and period fireplaces add character to this lovely home. Windows are large and double glazed to allow in plenty of sunlight. Thick walls and tiled floors keep the house cool during hot Summer days. It is a great place where families or a group of friends can come together for that special holiday or celebration. We are situated in a rural setting yet only 3min to the villages of Parcoul and La Roche Chalais. Whether it is a bit of individual privacy you are after or a noisy meal around the table, Maison Metcalf can comfortably accommodate your needs.
Downstairs
- Entrance: Step into the wide, welcoming entrance at Maison Metcalf and feel right at home! Doors to the kitchen, the dining room, and the games room lead off the entrance.
- Kitchen: A spacious, farmhouse kitchen where you will find everything you need to ensure a comfortable stay; a handy centre island, a good size dishwasher, large fridge/freezer, separate drinks fridge, brand new Smeg cooker, microwave, coffee-machine, toasters and an array of small appliances and gadgets. Sufficient crockery, cutlery, tableware, pots and pans make it easy to create gourmet meals for a large group of people. The back door opens to a covered terrace seating area.
- Dining room: Opposite the kitchen is the dining room with a table fit for a feast.
- Games room: The large games room is a great space in which to spend the occasional rainy day or when the sun becomes too much. The room oozes character with its original fireplace and solid, oak beams, and the think walls ensure it stays cool throughout the Summer. Enjoy a game of table tennis, table football (foosball) or darts here. The laundry room with a downstairs loo is off the games room.
Upstairs
- Bedrooms: There are four spacious bedrooms. Bedroom 1 with super king-size bed and en suite. Bedroom 2 with double bed and en suite. At the end of the passage are bedrooms 3 (double) and 4 (2 x single beds). These two bedrooms share a bathroom. All our bedrooms are light and airy with quality mattresses, linen and towels.
- Lounge: The large lounge, with its original fire place and solid, oak beams has comfy sofas, a TV and DVD player, and an Xbox with a number of dvds and games from which to choose. Numerous books for young and old in English, French and Dutch are available as are stacks of board games, puzzles and card packs.
Please note that the entire house is a non-smoking area which includes the use of e-cigarettes.
Outside
Set in a one acre garden with lawned area with pool, chickens and a further three acres of open field, Maison Metcalf has all the outside space required in which to unwind and relax. Kids run free here while parents take in the country air. The garden is big enough to enjoy a great BBQ with family or friends, yet wonderfully private and tranquil to find a quiet reading spot under one of the orchard trees. Come and recharge your batteries here with us.
- Pool: The large pool is fenced with a lockable security gate, and is for your sole enjoyment. It measures 10m x 5m with wide, Roman steps for easy access. The depth at the shallow end is just under a meter and the deep end is 1.4m. The surrounding patio has numerous sun loungers, deck chairs and umbrellas. An array of inflatable toys are available to provide many hours of fun in the pool. Pool towels are provided.
- Games & Garden: Laid to flat lawn, the garden area is ideal to while away the hours on lazy days. Watch the children in the pool while making a start on the barbecue under the big cherry tree. The under cover dining area just off the kitchen door makes dining al fresco easy. Alongside the orchard is the perfect spot for a friendly footie match or string up the badminton net between the trees and have a game. Alternatively you can partake in the slightly less energetic Viking chess.
- Lower field and beyond: Further down the garden and the lower lawn area is open field. Three acres of it; where the energetic and somewhat adventurous can run wild, or climb a bale of hay or two. You may spot our friendly farmer's sheep and horses on the fields below. Remember to check for eggs at the chicken coop when passing by.
Wherever you are at Maison Metcalf there is a special corner for everyone on the four acre grounds. We encourage you to explore the grounds and to find an area suited to you; whether it be a lively slalom race through the orchard, a game of footie or badminton on the lower lawn or finding a shady spot to read.
We look forward to welcoming you upon your arrival at Maison Metcalf and we will be discreetly available should you require any assistance during your stay with us.
We are perfectly situated to explore this beautiful corner of France and we are equidistant between the vineyards of Bordeaux to the South and the Cognac vines to the North. Steeped in history and a "must" on everyone's agenda is Saint Emilion, a scenic 35 minutes South - while in the area visit the medieval castle of Chateau de Vayres at Libourne. Forty five minutes to the North, with its beautiful Saint Pierre Cathedral, is Angoulême and a little further on lies the "Venice of the Perigord" Brantôme. On the other side of Brantôme and about 1hr 15mins from us are the fascinating caves of Villars. An hour West is Blaye with its formidable citadel and ferry port to the Médoc region. Head East for an hour to visit Périgueux and admire the town's Roman remains and famous St Front Cathedral. Slightly South of Perigueux is Bergerac for a day of wine tasting and exploration. Whatever your chosen direction you are guaranteed to stumble upon a wonderful bit of history not too far from Maison Metcalf.
La Roche Chalais is a 3min drive from us and has * a bank * a chemist * two supermarkets * a post office with hole-in-the-wall * a florist * a garage * a car wash * a good restaurant & bar * bakeries and butcheries * a hairdresser * a beauty institute * a tourist office * a weekly Saturday market*. Five minutes in the other direction lies Parcoul, a sleepy village with a great tex-mex restaurant, a boulangerie, butchery and library. Chalais is a 10min drive through Parcoul to the North and has a weekly Monday market. The beautiful village of Aubeterre with its incredible monolithic church is 20mins.
Leisure Park: Le Paradou is almost on our doorstep! This park has proven very popular with our younger guests. Water slides, trampolines, go-karts, mini-golf and much more await active, young ones. The lake's beach and swim area is a great spot to cool off, or jump in a pedalo and explore the waters. The restaurant has simple meals, but is good value for money. The bar is well stocked with a selection of beers on tap. A day pass means you are able to pop back to Maison Metcalf for that all important rest when too hot and return in the afternoon to continue the fun.
Golf: An easy, 9 hole course at nearby Aubeterre. Manoir de Longeveau has tennis courts and a great clubhouse too (we have the clubs and the rackets). Maison Metcalf guests receive a 10% discount on Green fees!
Kayaking & Canoeing: Negotiate the beautiful river Dronne by canoe or kayak while being accompanied by a qualified guide or do it on your own. The well established Parcoul canoe rental company is only a three minute drive from us.
Horse riding: Enjoy a day out on horse-back in the country side at St Aigulin. Pony rides are available too. For those wanting a few lessons beforehand, the equestrian centre Marker Aurora in La Roche Chalais is well respected in the area.
Amongst the trees: For all the budding Tarzans out there, this is a great day out at St. Aulaye. With various courses set for different age groups (starting from as young as three years) it is the perfect activity for the entire family. Break for lunch at the beachfront pizzeria/restaurant with ample space and a play area - do a bit of Archery in the afternoon.
Fishing: Fishing on the Dronne is now allowed for everyone who loves to fish (permits required). Dedicated areas are set out along the river at La Roche Chalais, or go one step further, hire your own 5-man electric boat at St. Aulaye and explore the wild life around the lake. No permit is required for the boat
Walking/Hiking: With so many forests around us finding a path is not difficult. Guided half day or full day walking tours are available at La Roche Chalais. In the valley of the Dronne and the Forest Double are 32 marked walking and cycling routes that varies from 3km to full day walks for visitors to explore. Alternatively, choose one of the many quiet country lanes around us and find your way down to the river Dronne.
Churches, Abbeys & Chateaux: A visit to the monolithic church at Aubeterre is a must. There are monolithic temples in five continents, but St Jean d'Aubeterre is certainly the only one in the world in which is found on one site, a baptismal font, a circular gallery, a mausoleum, an incredible burial chamber and an equally remarkable crypt. A true masterpiece! Echournac abbey is also worth a visit. The abbey is beautiful, but the stars are the Trappist monks who make their famous Trappist cheese and jellies.

It is a perfect spot for exploration of the wine region in the South and West, and the Cognac vineyards to the North, not to mention the many Pineau vineyards around us. Many abbeys, churches and historical places of interest scatter the country side around us and a world of activities are nearby for young and old to enjoy.

We were 10: our 4 grandaughters aged 6 to 12, their parents and the two of us. Many excellent features: the owners, David and Lee: helpful, pleasant, discreet; the pool and grounds; the spacious house and its location: water park close by, canoeing just up the road, 'arbor adventure' for tree-walking/zip wires etc at St Aulage 25 mins and a wonderful night market with music at Le Pizou 30 mins: several hundreds there. Temperatures in the upper 30s to begin with meant that the girls 'camped out' in the lounge rather than use the hot second floor bedrooms: they loved that! We felt that the 'smallholding' feature was a bit sparse with just one goat and that a little sprucing up in the kitchen would help, but the house was very well equipped and everything worked well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Many thanks.Guest rating:
Eleven family members stayed in this house, youngest being 3 and oldest in their 70’s. We had a absolute ball! The house is ideal for a large family or lots of friends as there is space and unlike other houses this one has lots of bathrooms. The garden (I should say grounds as it’s huge) is gorgeous and has lots of shady spots for during the day and is perfect for evenings meals; we had some lovely bbqs. The pool is great and because of the pool fence and gate around it you don’t need to worry about small children. And lastly the lovely kind owners Dave and Lee; they are fab. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you ?Guest rating:
Have just returned from a fabulous holiday at Maison Metcalf. It was an ideal venue for 13 family members ranging in age from 11 weeks to 60, plenty of space to accommodate everyone's different needs but also indoor and outdoor seating to allow for complete family dining experiences. The pool is a lovely size- large enough for the adults to swim a few lengths or play games yet not too overwhelming for the smaller family members. Lee and David are the perfect hosts-inconspicuous yet always there if any help or advice needed.Guest rating:
My family stayed at Maison Metcalf last week and loved every minute of it. There was plenty of room for the 12 of us. The gite had loads of character as well as comfy beds and modern showers. The pool was super and we couldn't keep the kids out of it. Lee and David are a lovely couple and the welcome pack was a nice thought. Everything we needed was provided. Only regret was that we booked for a week, we should have booked two. We would love to come back and see more of France.

Spent two weeks at the fabulous maison Metcalf. Had everything one would want for a family holiday in the sunshine. Fab bedrooms, well stocked kitchen, beautiful garden, pool and even a super friendly goat that the kids just loved to feed. Lee and David are wonderful people and have lots of advice on things to do and places to eat. Highly recommend Maison Metcalf and hope to be back again sometime!Guest rating:
We had a fantastic 2 weeks in Maison Metcalf celebrating my mum’s 70th birthday. There were 10 of us aged 4-70 and the house caters perfectly for all ages. The kids loved feeding Rosie the goat and the chickens as well as playing badminton and all the space to run around. The adults enjoyed the flexible outdoor space and everyone loved the pool. The house is spacious and comfortable. We had two great days at La Paradou where the huge inflatable slide / climbing wall / trampoline in the lake was unlike anything I’ve seen before! David and Lee were warm and welcoming hosts, even organising an Olympics games party for the kids on the first day of Rio 2016. I’d definitely recommend Maison Metcalf to anyone looking for a relaxed family holiday.Guest rating:
I had an amazing week there with 3 friends, great house, wonderful hosts and lovely area. Strongly recommend it for group or family.Guest rating:
Thoroughly enjoyed our recent week at Maison Metcalf. Child friendly garden, swimming area, house and hosts. Wonderful space indoors to lose each other for some quiet time or gather together and make happy summer memories. Loved the chickens with fresh eggs and felt quite eco friendly feeding food scraps to Rosie the goat. A wonderful time- thank you Lee and David.Guest rating:
We spent 2 weeks in May, at the amazing Maison Metcalf!! Went with my family and found it very child friendly, and the fenced pool was an added bonus. The location was perfect with a great variety of restaurants and activities close by. I would highly recommend and looking forward to returning soon. Thank you David and Lee for a great time.Guest rating:

This is a lovely property. We were 10 from 4-70. There is space for everyone. We had wet days but there was still plenty to do and see. The bathrooms were excellent and appreciated. The pool was well used. We had an excellent welcome and really enjoyed our stay. Our son in law has booked for next year already.Guest rating:
We had a wonderful week celebrating as a family my 60th birthday the house was a superb fit for our family. The teenagers loved the apartment and our 5 year old loved the goat and fed her numerous times a day. We had a few cloudy days when we visited local markets which the kids loved and David's recommendations for eating houses were spot on thanks! Overall we had a wonderful week at Maison Metcalf thank you.Guest rating:
We loved it. The best gite ever in many visits to France. Big pool, exceptionally comfortable beds, powerful modern showers, peace, tranquillity and really nice, helpful owners who live next door. NB Avoid horrid Texmex restaurant.Guest rating:
We had a wonderful holiday at Maison Metcalf! The kids absolutely loved the pool, running around the big orchard, and feeding the goats. Dave and Lee were great hosts, and did everything possible to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We stayed in the house as a group with another family, and it was very spacious with private spaces for relaxing as well as sociable spaces for sharing cooking and having fun together. We also had lots of very yummy fresh fruit and veg from Dave and Lee’s veggie patch (mmm, delicious tomatoes!). It’s in a beautiful area with plenty to do. There’s a big play park and lake for swimming and playing on the beach called Le Paradou, just two minute drive or pleasant walk/cycle away – our 8 year old particularly enjoyed all the pool tables and air hockey, and our 6 year old loved the go karts, trampolines, and the massive (slightly scary) water slide! There are lovely historic towns and villages nearby, and loads of different activities. We could easily have stayed for a month and not been bored. Thanks Dave and Lee and we hope to come back again before long. By Sarah, Mark, Alex & Abbie WightmanGuest rating:
