Downstairs
The gîte opens into:
- A living/dining area with many original features including pierre apparente and tuffeau walls (both typical of the area), a terracotta floor and a small wood burning stove. There is a sofa and easy chairs, a satellite TV (with UK freeview TV/radio channels), French terrestrial TV and DVD player. French doors open onto:
- A private patio area, where you can sit and enjoy al fresco dining. From the lounge you step through an arch into:
- The fully-fitted kitchen, which includes a fridge/freezer, gas hob, electric oven, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher.
- The master bedroom has a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom.
Upstairs
- Two large bedrooms (oak and pine) with 2 x 2m zip and link beds which can be configured as either twin beds or a super king double.
- A shower room with toilet.
Outside
At the far end of the garden is a 12m x 6m heated outdoor pool. This south-facing area sees the sun for most of the day and the terrace allows you to relax in a tranquil environment, perhaps with just the sound of the birds and the rustling of the poplars for company.
Each property also has a selection of books, games and DVDs. We also have a table tennis table, badminton and bikes available for you to enjoy if you're feeling more energetic.
We guarantee you a great night's sleep on our new beds, all with pocket-sprung mattresses. Whether single, king-size or super king-size, they have hollow-fibre duvets, pillows and crisp, white, 100% Egyptian cotton sheets.
Le Ruault is one of the properties in a hamlet, about 2.5 miles (4 km) from the village of Bouillé-Loretz. The village has a small convenience store and a bar/restaurant.
There are modern Super U supermarkets in all three nearby market towns:
- Doué-la-Fontaine
- Montreuil-Bellay
- Thouars
In addition, there are local 'farmers' markets in Doué-la-Fontaine (Mondays), Montreuil-Bellay (Mondays) and Thouars (Tuesdays and Fridays).
We are 25 minutes' drive from Saumur, a town steeped in military history on the banks of the Loire. Saumur market is held on most days.
The Loire valley is famous for its wine and châteaux. It is an historic area of France with much to see and do. The town of Saumur, on the banks of the Loire, has a rich, cultural background and an imposing château. We are approximately 27 kilometres/16 miles south of Saumur, surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers. We offer peace and tranquillity but also an ideal starting point to explore the best that the Loire valley offers.
Slightly further afield, Le Puy Notre Dame (a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and famous for the Bugatti car races through the streets each July), Montreuil-Bellay (with its beautiful château and church) and Doué-la-Fontaine offer a choice of restaurants.
Le Ruault (pronounced "Le Rue-oh") comprises two separate rental properties: one sleeping 8, the other 6 (although they can be rented together, making it an ideal situation for anyone looking to spend a holiday with extended family or friends). Nestled in seven acres of land, the properties are surrounded by an orchard, gardens, three large fields and a lake. The lake is fed by a natural spring and drains into a small stream (ruisseau) running through the land.
There is so much to do in the Loire valley. It depends on your interests. Each property includes a file with maps and brochures of local attractions.
We have 8 bikes including 3 for children for you to use. You can enjoy the countryside at a slower pace or, if you're a morning person, pick up fresh croissants from Bouillé-Loretz or Cersay. Please bring your own helmets if required.

How to get to Orchard Cottage
From the Channel Tunnel or Calais and Boulogne ferry ports:
- Calais: take the A16 then the A28 travelling south west to Le Mans.
- Le Mans: take the A11 towards Angers and then the A85 to Saumur.
- Saumur: drive south west from Saumur. Le Ruault is approximately 25 minutes' away.
Approximate travel time: 5 hours 20 minutes.
From Cherbourg, Caen or Le Havre:
Travel via Caen and Alençon before picking up the A28 to Le Mans, then follow the directions above.
Approximate travel time: 4 hours 30 minutes from Cherbourg, 3 hours 15 minutes from Caen and 3 hours 30 minutes from Le Havre.

EasyJet flies to Nantes (from London Gatwick) and to La Rochelle (from London Gatwick and Bristol).
By Train
We have travelled from the UK by train. It took just over 5 hours from St Pancras to Angers, changing in Paris. An alternative is to go via Lille. It is a longer journey but an easier change at Lille.
You can book through Rail Europe and the fares are surprisingly reasonable - more than a low-cost flight but cheaper than many similar-length journeys in the UK.
Car Hire
Le Ruault is a very rural spot, so if you are flying out or travelling by train, you will need to hire a car for the duration of your stay.
