Quiet Centre Ville Ground Floor Apartment in Sarlat with Peaceful Garden Terrace
On the ground floor of a beautiful stone building in Sarlat, the apartment is entered via the hallway of the main building.
- The kitchen/living room has a comfortable sofa, a television( English and French) and a dining table and chairs. The kitchen is equipped with an electric oven and gas hob plus a large fridge freezer.
- The bedroom has a double sleigh bed and a door onto the terrace which overlooks the garden. The terrace has a table, chairs and a barbecue.
- The bathroom is accessed from the bedroom and has a quality shower, WC and hand basin.
The apartment is comfortable and well situated for making the most of what Sarlat has to offer. The short stroll from the apartment to the historic centre is about two hundred yards, passing cafes, restaurants and a variety of food shops including a patisserie. If you travel by car there is ample free car parking at the rear of the property. The apartment has gas fired central heating so that off season lettings are encouraged.
Sarlat:
As the apartment is centre-ville it allows access to the delights of Sarlat without the need of a car. Sarlat is a delightful market town with many beautiful 12th century buildings. It is the historical, cultural and gourmet heart of the Perigord Noir. There is a market each Saturday and Wednesday, a general market on Saturdays and a farmer’s market midweek. During the winter months Sarlat hosts truffle markets for both commercial and private buyers.
In the summer evenings there are many professional street entertainers and the spectaculars which continue well into the night and one of the most pleasurable experiences is to pass the evening after dinner at one of the many street bars in the town square, watching the world pass by as the sun slowly dips, the illumination being provided by Sarlat’s gas street lights which give a soft light to the night.
Department:
The Dordogne is department 24 in France and consists of four regions, Perigord Blanc, Vert, Pourpre and Noir. Sarlat is at the middle of the Perigord Noir a stunningly beautiful area of hills and valleys most covered in deciduous forest with the Dordogne River adding yet another wonderful feature to the landscape. Wildlife abounds and as you would expect, the larger animals, the deer and the wild boar for example are very wary and timid but other creatures such as the red squirrels, the Red Kites and Buzzards are commonplace and a joy to behold.
It is very difficult in limited space to describe the outlying parts of the Perigord Noir. However Chateaux Des Millandes, one time home of Joséphine Baker with a stunning exibition and fly past of birds of prey, Castelnaud with its displays of armour and medieval seige machines – De Commarque, a huge restoration project on a site that has been inhabited for 15,000 years and deep in an ancient forest are all wonderful places to visit. The Cistertion Abby at Cadouin dates from 1115 with acclaimed cloisters that UNESCO made World Heritage status.
Lascaux 4 at Montignac, La Rogue St-Christophe, La Gouffre de Proumeyssac and many more grottes bear witness to the area being the cradle of civilization in Europe and are a part of the theme which is detailed in the National Museum of Pre History at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.
There are spectacular gardens to visit including Eyrignac, Marqueyssac and the Jardin d’eau at Carsac.
There are many hundreds of kilometres of walking and cycling trails where you can spend hours in the solitude of wonderful countryside.
You can spend a lazy half day canoeing down either the Dordogne or the Vézère, where the river does the work and you can drift down slowly if you wish, stopping wherever for a picnic and a glass or two.
Lastly, Monsieur Montgulfière invented the hot air balloon especially with tourists in the Dordogne in mind. You just might like to try it!
For foodies:
This part of France is famous for ducks, walnuts, truffles, cepes, goat’s and sheep’s cheese, strawberries and last but not least wine. We have an abundance of restaurants, cafes and auberges.
For the romantics – a fresh baguette, a bottle of wine chilled in the river, some cheese, walnuts and perhaps a little honey. A comfortable place to sit in the part shade on a warm day by the river. Heaven or what!
