THE HOUSE
'Maison du Mûrier' in the centre of the small village of Gabian in the South of France is named after the mulberry tree growing in its private courtyard. It is a house with charm and character in abundance. It is lovingly maintained and still has many of its original features, including the colourful Languedoc floor tiles, original panelled doors and marble fireplaces.
The main part of the house was built in the late 1800s with high ceilings and thick walls which help to keep the temperature pleasantly cool during the summer.
On the ground floor there is a spacious hallway with the living room and dining room on either side and a downstairs toilet and washbasin. The dining room has a large table for entertaining which can seat ten. It opens onto the well-equipped kitchen with fridge freezer, electric stove and dishwasher. The comfortable living room has two sofas, chairs, a coffee-table, a large Smart TV with English and French channels, a DVD player and a HI-Fi with blue-tooth connectivity.
On the first floor are four bedrooms, two with king size beds at the front of the house and two with twin beds overlooking the courtyard. There is also a light, spacious family bathroom with bath/shower, toilet and washbasin.
On the second floor is a second family bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet and washbasin. Hot water on this floor is provided by a separate system to the ground and first floor.
There are plenty of free parking spaces right outside the house and along the surrounding roads. There are also several free small car parks in the village.
SECLUDED COURTYARD AND PRIVATE POOL
The courtyard garden is large, private and secluded. In the summer the sun remains here until 8pm however there is always shade to be found; the best being provided by the mulberry tree.
The kidney shaped swimming pool measures 6m x 3m and is 1.5m deep. It can be heated to extend the swimming season when required. The courtyard is paved and there is a stone barbecue and solar shower on the south facing wall. An outdoor table provides seating for ten people and there are additional smaller tables, sun loungers and parasols arranged around the courtyard.
A large barn area measuring approximately 90m sq. opens out onto the courtyard via the original rustic doors. The kitchen also leads out into the barn area which houses the washing machine, a second fridge (for drinks) and a storage area for bikes and pool accessories. There is an entrance to the rear from the barn out onto the lane behind the house.
In the evening, the ambient pool lighting and solar powered lamps illuminate the courtyard making it the perfect setting for aperitfs and al fresco dining.
THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS AND FAMILIES
The enclosed courtyard makes the supervision of younger children in the swimming pool very easy and there are several inflatables and pool floats available in the barn. In terms of safety, the pool has an alarm and the courtyard can be secured by locking all the doors to it. A high chair is available in the house should you require one. There is a good selection of board games in the cupboard in the lounge and the large Smart TV will enable you to connect to your Netflix, Prime or YouTube account. There is also a play park in the village, just a five-minute walk from the house.
A selection of bikes is available in the barn for you to borrow to explore the local area. A day at the beach is just a 30-minute drive away, or you can go swimming inland at the reservoir at the Barrage de Olivette, or in the River Orb at Roquebrun where you can also go kayaking.
THE VILLAGE OF GABIAN
The village of Gabian is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills in the Hérault département in Occitanie in southern France. The pilgrim trail of El Camino de Santiago passes through the medieval heart of the village.
The house is in the centre of the village, near the church and you can walk to the boulangerie in under a minute. Next to the bakery is the grocery store and opposite, the village pharmacy. Within a couple of minutes walk you reach the excellent and very friendly local bar/restaurant called La Tavernat, the wine merchant 'caves', the Post Office, mairie and of course being rural France, a courtyard for joining the locals in a game of boules. There is an excellent 'Super U' supermarket just five minutes' drive away in the neighbouring village of Roujan.
A four-minute stroll from the house brings you out into the vineyards and along by the River Thongue. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can go hiking in the hills, cycling or kayaking, or you might prefer to go wine tasting or relax on the local beaches.
In the house there is plenty of information about the local beaches and cultural and leisure activities in the region, You will also receive a comprehensive guest information pack with recommendations on things to do in advance of your stay.
If you have any questions you'd like to ask, please don't hesitate to contact us.
The house is very well situated for all of the attractions of this region. All holiday tastes can be catered for here. The area is particularly good for walking, cycling, kayaking and wine tasting! Artists will enjoy the nearby lively, medieval walled town of Pézenas with its colony of artists, galleries, studios and local crafts, antique & artisan shops and concerts. It also has a fabulous Saturday market & great restaurants. Throughout the summer on Friday evenings from 8pm to midnight, Pézenas hosts 'Les Estivales' when all the shops stay open late, local vineyards are selling their wine in the streets and the old town is buzzing with life. Live music adds to the atmosphere. The Festival of Arts & Music is held in Pézenas every Summer between June and September, including historical re-enactments, concerts & exhibitions.
Food lovers are spoilt for choice with the many restaurants in Pézenas & the surrounding villages.
Gabian is surrounded by the vines of the Pezenas and Faugeres areas of the Herault. The area is known for its countryside, historic villages, castles and abbeys.
Standing on the bridge just down from the house you can enjoy watching the ducks & the koipu and the occasional stout. It boasts all the essential amenities: a well-stocked grocery store, a boulangerie, post office, café/bar/restaurant, pharmacy, hairdresser, doctor, private wine caves and vignerons. There is an excellent larger Super U in Roujan, the next village, just 5 minutes drive.
We are on the edge of the Haut National Park which is a paradise for walkers and cyclists. We are about 30 minutes from the coast at Agde, Sète and Mèze and from the foothills of the Cevennes. Lovely walks lead out from the village along streams, through wooded hills and rolling vineyards.
A few minutes up the road from Gabian in Mas Rolland is an award winning goats cheese farm. A few minutes on from there is the reservoir, the Barrages des Olivettes, a favourite place for picnics and swimming.
The beautiful golden beaches of the Mediterranean provide lengths of soft sand, safe for children to play. Watersports, boat trips, beach front restaurants and cafes are in abundance and are the perfect place to sit and watch the world go! Many of the beaches have full resort amenities.
The Gorges d’Héric and the River Orb valley are nearby and well worth a visit and offer a great opportunity for canoeing, bathing in the crystal clear rock pools and under the waterfalls and picknicking.
The beautiful fresh water Lake Salagou is about 30 minutes away and is perfect for bathing and windsurfing as well as walking and cycling.
Mèze and Bouzigues are a must for seafood lovers, where several restaurants serve daily some of the finest seafood in the area.

We have just returned from a week in this beautiful house. We were two families of 4 and there was plenty of space for us all. The bedrooms are spacious and airy, with comfortable beds. The house itself is one of the best equipped I have stayed in - there wasn't anything I could think of that was missing. We spent the mornings sightseeing or cycling (there are many lovely villages and vineyards pretty close by and great roads for cycling) and then the afternoons/evenings enjoying the lovely courtyard garden and pool.
Gabian is a very nice, traditional French village in a great location for exploring Languedoc. Can't recommend this property highly enough!Guest rating:
We have just had a wonderful weeks stay in this beautiful house. Maison du Murier is spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. All the rooms are large and airy, plenty of room for our family of seven. The courtyard and pool are delightful. There are sun loungers and a large table and chairs, perfect for dining al fresco. The lovely mulberry tree provided welcome shade from the hot sun. It was difficult to tear ourselves (especially our two grandsons) away to go exploring. We visited Grau d’Agde, Marseillan, Meze and Roquebrun. All are approximately 45 minutes away. There is a lovely new bakery in the village, run by a lovely young couple. It’s just at the end of the road next to the grocers. The SuperU supermarket in Roujan is excellent and only a few minutes away. The village has a play park, football pitch and basketball court, ideal for our grandsons to run off some energy while waiting for the delicious pizzas to be made by the pizza man in his van. Our host couldn’t have been more attentive, informative and helpful. We had a perfect family holiday. Thank you. Dawn carterGuest rating:
Something for everyone. Beautiful tile floors, comfortable beds, useful kitchen, high ceilings, cool on a hot day w/o ac, pool for cooling off, lovely outdoor eating area, nicely located in the centre of the village. Wonderful walks in the village. Super helpful and responsive landlord. In the centre of great (little known in the US) wine district (St. Chinian, Faugeres, etc). Fascinating old town with good shopping close by: Pezenas. Pique-nique at the Seigneurie de Peyrat was outstanding as were the wines at ND Mougeres. Carcassone was close enough for a day's visit as was the Med. The whole family, from grandparents to little ones, were very happy. No local bakery, but a great Super U close by.Guest rating:
I would like to thank all those nice people who made sure that our stay was ideal. The house was wonderfully cool and the pool was blue, blue, blue. thank you for solving my dilemma of renting your marvelous place just when we dispaired from finding one for all of us at a reasonable price. We enjoyed seeing the tiny bottles and the old book that gave a glimpse into the history of the house. We also loved the fact that we can walk to grocery shop and the central location. thank you.

On entering this typically 'French' idyllic house we immediately felt all our stresses of life simply melt away. The spacious house manages a mix of grandeur and rustic charm in abundance; a cool haven from the heat. Plenty of equipment in the kitchen enabled us to dine 'al fresco' for every meal and the ample sized garden table allowed us to display our successful BBQ attempts. The secluded courtyard with fabulous pool, plants, and sun loungers, was an oasis of relaxation and the tree provided some welcome shade. We would have happily stayed in the courtyard all week 'chilling' but thought we had better do some sightseeing. Hi lights of our week were wine and food tasting in Pezenas on Friday night and their Saturday morning market. Pezenas is a charming town with cobbled streets in the older part; we ate there several times, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. A 'pique nique' at Peyrat wine domaine was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, sampling wines and local produce whilst sat in a leafy courtyard...bliss! Trips to the coast at Marseillan and Coullioure were amazing....get there early to park! During the booking process and throughout our holiday the owner has provided excellent customer service and we would not hesitate in recommending this house to our friends. We left with many wonderful memories of our French vacation.

We loved this house and had a great week. It is clean, well equipped and we felt totally at home there. The courtyard is very pretty and is a perfect space to relax in and we cooked on the barbecue most nights. Gabian is worth walking around - there is a short walking tour around the ancient part of the village. Pezenas market on Saturday mornings is very good, as is the bread from Gabian's boulangerie. Gorges d'Heric is breathtaking and Roquebrun is great for canoeing and swimming. The owner provided a wealth of information and we felt we were valued guests.

We had 2 weeks in this superb property. I think it's without doubt one of the best ones we've ever stayed in. The house is just so roomy. We were 7 people and we didn't once get under each other's feet. Everything has been thought of, even down to a large drinks fridge as well as a large kitchen fridge. The bedrooms were large with plenty of cupboard and wardrobe space. There are two bathrooms with showers and a third toilet! Outside in the courtyard and pool area (which is to be fair where we spent most of our time) is very private and pretty. There were enough sunbeds, and in excellent repair, to cater for everyone (which in previous holidays at other properties we've not found to be the case!) The owners obviously spend time in the property themselves and this shows as the property felt like a second home - not a shut up and leave type place. There was lots of information left for us about the house and the surrounding area. We mostly ate in Pezenas which was around a 10-minute drive away - a lovely Medieval town with great restaurants, fab ice cream bars and a weekly Saturday market. We also BBQ'd a few times in the ample BBQ in the courtyard. There's not much in the quiet rural village of Gabian but that suited us. We found the boulangerie just around the corner for most mornings and sampled the pizza man in the van a couple times. We would highly recommend this property for a great base to explore this wonderful wine growing region of France.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Gabian. The village is small with a couple of bars - one mainly French the other mainly international, there are a bakers and a small grocery store within a few yards of the house. Parking was easy and there was only one day when we couldn't park near enough outside the house - so about 200 yards away. The house is well appointed, as described and the pool was a delightful way to cool down - I even managed to practice my water volleyball skills! It was great to have a separate living room from the dining room (the latter was the room we spent most of our time in when indoors) for a bit of peace and quiet from the others. There are some mobile food vendors that come to the village of an evening - the pizza man was our favourite, and there are some interesting restaurants nearby - though one of you will have to drive. Some lovely walks made the stay ideal. We also traveled further afield visiting Millau bridge which is superb and an interesting drive. There is a reservoir - details in the visitor's book - fairly nearby which made a great picnic spot. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend staying here.

A lovely house in a small village. An absolute gem of a property with a swimming pool that is in a completely secluded courtyard. The house is generously equipped and feels more like a home than a holiday let. The nearby town of Pezenas is a complete delight and we often visited for meals, sight seeing and shopping. A good centre for exploring the area, with beaches fairly close by. The owners have left a comprehensive pack detailing towns and areas of interest which we found most useful. Overall a lovely place to enjoy and relax in.

Hadn't been to this part of France for over 10yrs & my expectations of this village & the property were totally exceeded. The location is perfect for lovely walks through & surrounding the many vineyards. The house was spacious & very well equipped, providing a group of 5 friends the perfect base for exploring the area & for languishing in the lovely courtyard with pool. Excellent service provided by the owners & I will be recommending this house to many other friends. I won't be leaving it another 10 yrs for my next visit & would love to stay in this Gabian house again. Thank You.

This is a truly gorgeous house in a delightful village, in the heart of Herault wine country. We were blessed with fabulous weather for our stay, so pretty much lived out in the stunning courtyard, which has everything you need - pretty pool, barbecue, roomy dining table - as well as being full of flowers and herbs. Lovely ! But you can tell that this house would be ideal for any time of the year, even for a much bigger group than we were. It has great bedrooms ( with comfy beds), smart bathrooms, a really cosy sitting room and a huge dining room. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm, and yet all the antique charm of this lovely house has not been sacrificed to the mod cons. This house has a lovely French feel, stylishly decorated, and was nice and cool during our sunny stay. Gabian is a lovely village, with all the basic shopping you need, and surrounded by wine domaines in every direction. The added attractions of historic Pezenas are only a ten-minute drive away. A great place for a wonderful stay - we would definitely return!
Guest rating:
The house was every bit as good as your web site said it would be. We had a very comfortable stay with a choice of lovely bedrooms and two good sized public rooms. The kitchen is small but has all the essentials. The courtyard is idyllic and it is quite easy to spend all day there, dipping in the pool when it gets a bit hot! We explored a lot of the area by car and loved the village or Roquebrune, set in a river valley, which is about an hour drive away. The sea is also within reasonably easy reach. We liked the port of Marseillan where there is a good choice of restaurants and views of a small marina. The tiny village of Gabian is lovely and well worth walking round - and beyond into the countryside. I have no hesitation in recommending this property for a comfortable and relaxed holiday.

I was a bit apprehensive about this holiday at first, as we hadn`t been to France before. We drove down from Dieppe and as soon as we arrived at Gabian I knew we were in for a fantastic time. The town itself is small, quiet and very lovely. The house itself was amazing, beautiful rooms, plenty of space and full of character. Couldn`t have pick a better place to stay if we`d tried, we felt very at home. There are so many places of interest to visit we didn`t have time to fit them all in so hopefully we`ll be going back again next year.

My family have just come back after a great holiday in Gabian. It was everything you could wish for, large rooms which were always cool during the day, kitchen with everything you needed for family cooking, Outside had a great BBQ, pool and lounges ideal for evening meals and lazy afternoons in the sun. The quiet village has a good bakery which we would buy freshly baked bread, On a Thursday the pizza van came into the square where you can go down and order pick up when ready. We hired cars for the week, parking was not a problem if you got outside or along the road, as we had 2 cars we had to find spaces elsewhere, as a result we received a parking fine, if you have more than one car my advice would be to park in the square at the end of the road. The owners of the house were really helpful kept in touch and gave us plenty of information etc. There are lots of places to go and see for everyone. We all had a fantastic holiday in a lovely French house definitely would recommend. Thanks Fenneke.

We stayed here for 2 weeks in Summer, 2014, and had one of our most enjoyable holidays. This is a beautifully restored and maintained property in the center of a quiet village. This spotless house lived up to all the descriptions, and more - no hyperbole here! Importantly, the owners maintained contact before and during our stay to ensure that any problems would remain minor, and the solicitous hospitable ambiance enriched the experience. The house is remarkable - cool in the warmth of the day, comfortable with windows open at night. The kitchen is well-appointed for those who like to cook, and the local availability of fresh produce from farms provided extra flavor. The area is central to all levels of activity as described, and locally, there was a diversity of running trails through vineyards and woods. The pool in the courtyard is a wonderful resource for children, who can be supervised by adults lulling in comfortable chairs in the shade. We would recommend this house with enthusiasm.
