La Mouleyre is a stunning Chateau set in 3 acres of beautiful grounds surrounded by some of the world famous vineyards and Chateaux of St Emilion. Positioned at the head of a lovely small valley it has exquisite views over the tranquil landscape of the surrounding vineyards to the hills of the Dordogne River. This charming retreat is in the heart of wine country, just 7km from the UNESCO World Heritage medieval village of St Emilion. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy and from which to explore the many pretty villages and historic towns of the area and experience wine tastings at the most iconic chateaux.
Built in 1602, it was Chateau La Mouleyre (St Emilion Grand Cru) until the vines were sold to the neighboring Chateau Faugeres in 2006 and the house, barn, chais (wine aging cellar) and grounds were purchased in 2008. Renovated sympathetically so it retains all the original charm into a beautiful country retreat, its 17th century origins are evident in its beamed ceilings, stone walls, tower, marble and wood floors, historic fireplaces, shuttered windows. Now a delightful blend of fully modern amenities in a centuries old structure, furnished with an uncompromising approach to comfort.
The spacious and elegant interior allows guests to be as social or as private as they wish. There are 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 4 reception areas offering comfort for friends or multi-generational families.
Rooms are inviting and restful. Contemporary art and lighting add sleek interest. One of the standout features is a epicurean’s gourmet kitchen featuring luxury décor and professional appliances.
Ground Floor (travertine marble floors with underfloor heating)
- Kitchen - Very spacious, granite worktops, huge island, Miele appliances (2 wall ovens), Nespresso, etc. Table for 10 and further seating at the breakfast bar.
- Dining - Main table seats 10. "Children's" table can be added. Substantial period fireplace. Ideal for a formal gathering or celebration. Doors to garden.
- Salon - Peaceful living area; beautiful fireplace; doors to the rose terrace dining area and garden.
- Salon 2/Study - High ceilings; beams; skylights, large couch; maps and guide books and info and recommendations on things to do.
- Courtyard - Mediterranean inspired inner courtyard with roses and extensive planting. Teak dining table. Great for breakfast, lunch or aperitifs.
- Utility room with washer, second main fridge, freezer and refreshment fridge
- Entrance hallway with beautiful stone staircase leading to the first floor and door through to the inner courtyard.
- Pink Room - Large bedroom with double bed and couch. Doors leading directly to the inner courtyard. En suite with walk in shower.
First Floor ( wooden floors with carpets: radiator heating )
- Blue Suite - Huge room; Super King bed, massive beams; armoire; large en suite with walk in shower and 180 cm bath. Romeo & Juliet balcony. Dressing area in tower. Magical views across the gardens and vines.
- Lavender room - Very large room; Emperor bed; en suite with shower. Same great views.
- Blue room - Double bed; huge armoire; lovely upholstered chairs. Same great views. Bathroom with 180cm bath adjacent.
Top Floor (Painted wooden floors, radiator heating )
- Ivory Room - 30 sq m, Oak beams, king bed; 2 single beds; large en suite with claw foot bath and glass shower enclosure ( low access door ).
- Bedroom 6 - accessed through Ivory room. Double bed; single bed. With Ivory forms a good family suite.
Barn
- Large barn----( ex wine prod area ) used for games ( ping-pong ), darts, etc with equipment for pool, bikes( 5 adult ( 1 e bike ) and 2 children's), boules, football for use outside and tennis equipment and basketball for use at the nearby courts. Has a wood burning fire so is also used for wine-tasting; and meals/parties for very large groups. games equipment, bikes,etc. Indoor play area.
Outside
- A private, heated swimming pool 10 x 4 meters with plenty of pool furniture. Pool is at 28'. Mature trees, roses, pomegranates, figs, lavender beds, herb garden and lawns ideal for boules or games. 2 ponds with resident ducks; wildflower meadow and fruit trees. Several alfresco dining options-- under a huge tree; on the main south facing terrace; and in the tranquil inner courtyard. Large stainless steel mains gas BBQ. Numerous seating and sunbathing options.

Traditional markets with fresh produce close by all week. Great restaurants in the area. Fascinating Bordeaux around 45 minutes with beautiful beaches, including Arcachon-- famous oysters and Europe's largest sand dune--a further 30 minutes. All of the other great Bordeaux wine areas--Pomerol, Medoc, Graves, Sauternes, etc. within easy reach. Children's activities at several locations nearby. For golfers, the St. Emilionnais is 10 min and Chateau des Vigiers 25 min.
The area around La Mouleyre is great for cycling (4 bikes) and for hiking/walking through the vines. Horseriding nearby. A small lake with a sand beach 15 min away and fishing/canoeing/rowing on the Dordogne. Near Castillon la Bataille, great spectacle of re-enactment ( ~500 actors ) of last battle of 100 years war several evenings during the summer.
