Mont Joie is a charming 15th Century stone house located in the heart of the village of Beynac, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The chateau at Beynac is on the top of a 500-foot cliff and the village houses are positioned below - providing privacy and spectacular views from one side of the house, and village life on the other.
Extraordinary views of the magnificent Dordogne river and the Valley of the Five Chateaux present themselves from each of the four floors.
The front door opens directly from the cobblestone streets - just steps from our private and unique parking grotte - into:
- The main room of approximately 60 sq. meters. Honey-colored stone walls, stone tile floor, ancient wooden beams, and a huge medieval fireplace set the tone for this main floor.
- A fully applianced kitchen with granite countered cooking area is built into one of the old fireplaces. Antique carpets and leather seating offers a comfortable area to relax, listen to the stereo or view English satellite television on the 30' flat panel television. The large dining table suitable for seating up to 6 diners is next to the window offering spectacular views of the river, the sunset, and the colorful Montgolfiers (hot air balloons) drifting by at dawn and sunset most days in season.
Down the stone staircase is:
- The Master Bedroom with an ensuite bathroom combining modern fixtures with stone walls. A King-size bed with a Tempurpedic mattress, reading lamps, desk, and a large private full-width balcony with loungers, barbeque and dining table for two make this room the ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine to admire the view. On this same level, there is
- A very small bedroom with bunk beds for children, which is especially convenient for parents who want their young children to sleep nearby but in a separate space from the master bedroom.
One floor down, the old merchant's storeroom now is
- The second large bedroom, again with stone walls, ancient beamed ceiling, and a river view. This room also has a king-size bed.
- An ensuite bathroom
- A full laundry room with a washer and dryer complete this floor.
Because neither bedrooms are in the attic, and the thick stone walls offer a cooling insulator against the hot Dordogne summers, we sleep comfortably cool all summer long, many times with a duvet cover.
Another floor down brings you to a flagstone terrace with a grape and wisteria arbor for a shaded sitting area and a few steps down, the stunning swimming pool area (Open May 1-Oct 31) - with panoramic views and full access to the sun. Wonderful views of the river from both terraces and views of the Chateaux of Fayrac, Castelnaud, Lacosse, and Marqueyssac.
Eat, drink and be merry. Mont Joie is truly a destination in itself. Many of our guests return each year and plan their whole vacation around their stay at this property. So pack your bags and experience the true French joie de vivre.

The village of Beynac consists of a cluster of golden-stone houses beneath a dramatic 500-foot cliff. Perched at the top stands the 12th century Chateau Beynac, rising from the sheer cliff face along the most historic and scenic section of the Dordogne River. With its formidable Chateau, rows of charming houses, and the gentle river below, the setting is simply captivating. La Petite Maison makes for an ideal home base for visiting all the picturesque villages in the Perigord Noir, including Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud, Monpazier, and Sarlat.

How to get to Villa Mont Joie
Most likely you will be arriving in Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, or Bergerac. If you choose to begin your trip with a visit to Paris, you can take the train to Brive-la Gaillarde. From there you can rent a car at the Avis car rental agency, which is very close to the train station but please note they are closed for lunch from 12-2: 00 pm and make sure your train arrives during their operating hours. Or you may consider renting a car in Paris and making the 6-hour drive (not recommended after a long flight without rest). You will need a rental car to get around the countryside. Prices are best when booked from home.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are using a GPS to navigate your way, please be sure to type in Beynac-et-Cazenac, 24220. Otherwise, you could end up at another Beynac near Limoges not nearly as charming as the one you came to see !
From Bordeaux (~ 3 hrs): Take the A89 to Perigueux, then follow signs to Sarlat, then Bergerac, then Beynac.
From Toulouse (~ 3 hrs): Take the A20 north and exit at Souillac (exit 55) Do not exit BEFORE Exit 55, then follow signs to Sarlat, then Bergerac, then Beynac.
From Bergerac (~ 1 hr): Follow the signs east towards Lalinde, St. Cyprien, then Beynac
From Paris by car (~ 6 hrs): Take the A3 Paris, A10 Bordeaux, A71 Toulouse, A20 Toulouse south, exit at Souillac ( exit 55) Do not exit before Exit 55, follow signs for Sarlat, then Bergerac, then Beynac
From Paris by train / coach (~ 6 hrs): Depart at Gare d'Austerlitz train station, disembark at Brive-la Gaillarde. Avis Rental Agency is one block downhill from the Brive Station. Follow signs to Sarlat, then Bergerac, then Beynac.

It is hard to imagine a more beautiful place from the moment you turn off the main road into the village of Beynac. The walk up to the Chateau is a series of postcard picture opportunities of both the stone buildings and the spectacular views. We were very fortunate to be staying in the Mont Joie, which is a beautiful stone house with a view over the valley which almost doesn’t seem real. From this base, there are many sites and activities that are easily accessible. Our recommended activities included taking a shuttle from Beynac to Vitrac and canoeing back to Beynac downriver with a stop at La Roc Gageac for lunch and a walk through the beautiful village and gardens. Also highly recommended is an evening hot air balloon ride that can also be accessed from a shuttle at the Beynac village parking lot. Saturdays it is also highly recommended to go to the market in Sarlat la Caneda. Another day excursion could be a drive to Padirac to experience the caves and continue to the spectacular Rocamadour. Park at Hospitalet and take the pathway down to the touristy village and then take the hike up the former pilgrimage past the church of the black Madonna.

My family and I had a magical time at this amazing home. The home’s ambience was remarkably comfortable and perfectly complemented the history of precious Beynac. The view of the River took our breath away. And there is both a washer and dryer. They were a godsend. We would love to return during the warm season.

There is nothing that I would improve on, this is a wonderful vacation rental. Sitting on the balcony on the -1 floor, with the view of the river and the chateaux, is a vacation all by itself. Martine is an attentive and helpful caretaker, who thought of everything, and keeps the house in perfect shape.

A beautiful well equipped house in a stunning location. Plenty of restaurants nearby or if you want to eat in there are a few supermarkets in nearby Sarlat. We spent days relaxing by the pool and on the terrace with its incredible views interspersed with visits to one of the many nearby chateaus and castles. Kayaking down the Dordogne was great fun. Renting a car is a must if you want to be able to get around. Everyone is very friendly and even if like me your French is awful communication is not a problem.Guest rating:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Mont Joie. The house is lovely, so comfortable and homely and very well equipped, the views from every level are spectacular and the area is absolutely beautiful with loads to see and do. The village is perfect and the local restaurants delicious and reasonable; we really can't think of anything negative to say about the house or about our stay. Martine is delightful and just the right balance of being available but not over intruding. Vincent is an ideal host and we think that the orientation guide is the best we have ever had. We managed to get our Nissan Qashqai into the parking grotto without any scrapes, although we never got near a three point turn to go back down the easier side (after once going down the hill outside the house - now that was tight!)Guest rating:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Mont Joie. The house was well-appointed and a perfect fit for two adult couples with two nice master bedrooms and baths on separate levels from the grand living room and dining area on the main floor. The views from the house were amazing - fog lifting off the river in early morning, hot air balloons taking off in the afternoon from the field across the river and beautiful sunsets. We shopped at the local weekly market in nearby St. Cypriene (the best we have ever seen!) and enjoyed preparing most of our dinners in the well-equipped kitchen.
Beynac is a beautiful village with good restaurants and is perfectly situated to explore the many and varied sights and attractions in the area. Beynac is also an excellent base for canoeing on the Dordogne and great cycling in the region, ranging from relatively flat and easy to long challenging rides with plenty of scenic hills - high quality bikes can be rented for the week from Aquitaine Bikes who will deliver and pickup from Beynac.
We found that a week was not enough to enjoy this wonderful area and hope to return again soon to Villa Mont Joie!

Our family had an amazing time at Mont Joie. The house is in a great location in Beynac-- as described in other reviews, it's a little bit of a hike up to the house but well worth it. The views of the Dordogne from the main room window are incredible. It is a true historical home, but also has the modern comforts that made it an enjoyable stay for our family. Vincent provided a very helpful guide to both the house and the area-- it's great to have a local perspective beyond what the guidebooks tell you. We really enjoyed staying in Beynac-- while smaller than Sarlat, it had good restaurants, grocery, patisserie, boulangerie, etc.-- we would definitely choose to stay in Beynac and at Mont Joie again!

My husband and I rented this house to celebrate my birthday. We wanted a quiet holiday where we could relax and enjoy the French countryside. We definitely got that by staying in Mont Joie!!! We felt instantly relaxed after we arrived. We proceeded to spend every evening on the balcony enjoying watching the birds, boats on the river and life in the village. The village of Beynac is extraordinary with its beautiful stone houses, cobbled streets and its chateau! We loved exploring the alleyways and visiting the local shops and restaurants. The locals were very friendly and helpful - even when dealing with our basic French! This was the perfect location to explore the surrounding villages which also have a rich history.
The parking grotto (and the road up to it) are too difficult to navigate unless you are in the most compact of cars. We tried it once and then decided to park at one of the nearby lots instead as our small car was not small enough!

Breathtaking views that we enjoyed from the dining room and especially from the terrace. Well provisioned and we were well taken care of by the local contact people. We loved the area and took the river walk to Chateau Castlenaud, canoed on the Dordogne, and visited three Cro-Magnon man cave painting sites. We had a hard time leaving!!

Our stay at Mont Joie, has been wonderful. After about 24 hours we began to refer to it as “our house” & “our town” (as in: our town is much better!). It’s a place We always dreamed of staying, but couldn’t describe, until Arriving here. could not stop taking pictures at every turn as I explored this little town. The four of us had a great time exploring the Dordogne & Perigord. We went to markets in St. Cypriene & Sarlat (so, so, too big). Tasted wine in the Percharmant (very good,) and ventured into prehistoric caves in Rouffignac (incredible). Beynac is a great, central location for day trips in every direction.
Mont Joie was very comfortable & well appointed, especially the kitchen. We like to cook & it had everything we needed, which isn’t common in a rental unit. And I can’t tell you how much we appreciated a DRYER?. The fireplace was so wonderful since a cold front moved in. Had a fire most nights. One suggestion, a full length mirror would be nice.
We really need to give a shout out to Martine who was so welcoming & helpful even though we had the language barrier. If you ever want or need a guide, please call Sarissa who will take you to wineries, prehistoric caves and the best place to buy chocolate eclairs.

The photos of this stone house in the quaint Medieval french village of Beynac looked too good to be true. As it turned out, if anything, they didn't do the place justice. Mont Joie is a little plice of magic where we spent two weeks recently. Imagine waking up in the morning and your biggest decision is which patisserie to walk to for fresh croissants! The place has three private terraces, all with slightly different views of the misty Dordogne. The house has a great kitchen, so many nights we cooked for ourselves and enjoyed the view. One great plus for us was there are TWO master bedrooms, each with private bathrooms and each equally desirable, so if you travel with friends, nobody has to settle for a bad room. The owner, Vincent, was easily available to answer email questions, and he supplied a huge and very useful guide to the town and the region. Plus, he has people in the town to address any needs you might have. The only very slight downside is the single parking space, which is small and extremely hard to access. We never even tried - we just kept our car in one of the very reasonable public lots about a five-minute walk from our door. Don't just take my word for it. Rent the 2000 film Chocolat. Look at the early scene of Juliet Binoche and her daughter making their way up a narrow stone street. That is YOUR street if you stay at Mont Joie!

We had a great stay in Mont Joie- a lovely, well furnished and comfortable home overlooking the Dordogne river, with patio and garden to enjoy as well. We had everything we needed, a well stocked kitchen with good knives, several pots and pans, big bowls and plenty of utensils to cook meals. The beds were quite comfortable and the bathrooms modern and big. Something to note: the bedrooms and bathrooms are downstairs one and two levels down. The lower level is quite cool- great in summer but needing the heater in the fall, and is a bit of a hike to get back up to the living area. So not only are there a lot of steps up and down in the house, but also a quite steep walk up to the house on the street. We loved getting all that exercise, so did not mind it. We did not get a chance to enjoy the lovely gardens because the weather was too cold, but the view outside the living room is beautiful. All in all , a lovely stay.

The property is located in the historic village of Beynac below the impressive castle. The village has narrow steep lanes and Mont Joie is located on one of these routes. The house covers three floors with the entrance at the top floor where the kitchen and lounge area are located. The lower floors have the bedrooms with a great balcony terrace on the middle floor from the master bedroom. The views of the river, castles and town frontage are superb from this terrace and the lounge window. There is also the added bonus of regular morning and evening balloon flights passing over the river in view from the house.
The property has all the modern day appliances for cooking, washing, entertainment etc.
Whilst there is a parking place for the house it is located up the narrow lanes - we decided to buy a weekly pass from the Mayor's office for 13 Euros rather than undertaking the challenging driving manoeuvres required to access the parking place.
Beynac is a great location for seeing the many great sights in the Dordogne including Beynac itself, Roque Gageac, Domme, Sarlat etc.

We've stayed at Mont Joie three times. That alone should express how we feel about it. The home is on a rise directly above the Dordogne, with a dramatic view which sweeps across several miles of the valley. From Mont Joie, you can see three historic castles - Castelnaud, Marqueyssac and Fayrac. Mont Joie was built in the 1500s and restored a few years ago with careful attention to historic detail. There's a certain wonderful feeling which pervades Mont Joie which is hard to put into words. The outside appears as it did centuries ago. The interior retains the original stonework, but all of the amenities are modern and upscale. There's a fully-equipped kitchen with high-end modern appliances, two stylish bathrooms and two bedrooms with comfy full-size beds. The porch, one of only a handful in Baynac, includes teak loungers and an ever-changing view that might make you forget you ever wanted to see the other villages. There are also two terraces with incredible views, one under a canopy of wisteria. If you're driving a small car, it will fit into Mont Joie's parking grotto adjacent to the house. Those with larger cars can park in the riverfront public lot a short distance down the hill. We've visited just about every village and town within 50 miles of Beynac, and have concluded that Beynac has the most striking setting. The village has a remarkable ambiance and there's a huge, genuine castle just up the hill! Beynac is just large enough to have several small shops which can provide you with most anything you'll need during a week's stay. The location couldn't be better. Just about everything that most people come to the Dordogne for is either right in the village or just a short drive away. If you need bigger stores, the small city of Sarlat is just 8 miles away. You won't be disappointed with Beynac or Mont Joie. J T and Regina

Mont Joie and Beynac were beyond expectation. The pictures on VRBO certainly got us there but to actually BE there . . . awe inspiring and phenomenal! The only problem was that once we were there, it was really hard to get ourselves off one of the porches and out : O) We definitely did not venture as far as we have on past trips; didn't have to! We did the markets in St. Cyprien and Sarlat, visited Domme, Collegnes de Rouge, Marquaysac, Castelnaud and Josephine Baker's home, wining and dining along they way.
The house book was very helpful; we referred to it each day . . . and Martine, the house manager, was a gem : O)
We really wanted to stay another week, very hard to leave! Maybe next time . . .

Mont Joie is an idyllic home from time past. The home is appointed beautifully with a very lovely kitchen that was a joy to use.
The views from the dining area are magnificent. We even enjoyed watching three hot air balloons being inflated and taking off and then floating down the valley with the castles in the background!! The surrounding towns, castles and gardens are very interesting and delightful to visit. Lots to see and do! (The street which has the private parking grotto is most easily approached from the East, not the West ).

This is an elegant house: comfortable, well designed, and well supplied. Arrangements ahead of time are friendly and easy. The staff on hand is most helpful. Views over the river and across the countryside to the castles beyond are spectacular. We were there in early November, so did not get to use the outdoor terrace, but otherwise I recommend November for the lack of crowds and the clear, autumn weather. Do take note that the hill up to the house is steep, with a cobbled surface. This is typical of villages along the Dordogne, which provides part of their charm, and is the only caution about the house that is worth mentioning. We have rented a great many vacation houses in various parts of Europe and North America, and this one is among the very best.

I can't say enough about Mont Joie!! We were treated wonderfully by the lovely woman who met us upon arrival (very late at night, nonetheless), by the adorable housekeeper, by the owners themselves, and by all the kind people in town!
The house was breathtaking. When I say that, I mean it. I can't describe in words the beauty and true authenticity that is this house. The walk up the cobblestone path (and Chateau Beynac is at the top of the hill if you keep walking!) is magical. It feels like you're in a different century. The house is magnificently done - all fabulously updated while holding that medieval charm. The doors, windows, walls, and fireplace were all a wonder to experience. The layout is perfect. Open and airy. Balconies everywhere with views of castles, the river, and the green countryside. Two master suites were perfect. The children's bedroom was adorable. The garden was dainty and the cobblestone steps leading down to it made my heart skip a beat.
We were in Beynac during the off-season so it was quiet, which we loved. Our family (me, husband, two small children) were there for a week before my mother and step-father joined us. They were just as blown away!
The gardens, ooohhhh how lovely!! The strolls along the cobblestone paths - I never wanted them to end. The bakery, butcher, market, and restaurants in town were all a delight! Everyone was so welcoming and helpful. So kind.
Sarlat was a fun place to hang out for a day, ride the carousel, walk in the park, do some shopping and dining. We did the Jardins de Marqueyssac, which went on forever and ever in their magical greenery.
We did a few castles (Castelnaud was by far the favorite of the children, as the place comes alive and you can tour around the castle and grounds). We did the Prehisto Dino Park for the kids - and they loved it. Simple but fun! We did some caves, fun and awe inspiring. We saw an ancient city once built into the side of a rock face. We saw another ancient / medieval castle built into the side of a cliff.
Every dining experience was one for the books. We ate in Beynac and Sarlat as well as a few other places - all fab. And the WINE! My favorite thing to do was get some local radishes and butter, a baguette, foie, and local cheeses to enjoy while sipping wine on the balcony. The Cahors malbec, oh yes.
Again, I can't say enough about this place. It was truly a magical fairytale dream come true. We will be back. Oh yes, we will be back.

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend six nights at Mont Joie in early December and cannot speak highly enough of this beautiful home in what is a truly exceptional part of France.
As Chateau Beynac and the village first came into view the effect was simply stupendous and we could hardly believe that the next week was to be spent in such a glorious village.
Martine met us in the car park and very ably assisted the transfer of the luggage and our introduction to the joys of Mont Joie. She is a wonderful asset to the owners and as helpful and friendly as can be. She also kindly booked dinner for us at a local restaurant.
As you step into the house the feeling of stepping back in time is inescapable however the furniture and fit out are so comfortable and welcoming that you feel completely at home (not that our home is in any sense comparable!).
I won't describe the house in detail as that has been done many times before. Suffice to say that absolutely everything you have read in the reviews Mont Joie is accurate. As we were there in early winter we did not get to spend much time in the two terraced gardens or on the terrace off the main bedroom however they would clearly be wonderful and peaceful areas in warmer weather.
The weather for early December was wonderful for touring however with crisp nights clearing to sunny skies and no rain or winds at all so we counted ourselves very lucky.
Mont Joie and Beynac are a fantastic base from which to tour the Dordogne and we certainly did a lot of that. The options are almost endless and are such as to cater to all interests. What was equally wonderful however was to come home at the end of a long days touring to the comforts of our temporary home in Mont Joie. Often the highlight of the day was to sit in the comfortable couches with a glass of local wine and review the wonders we had seen, with the beauty of the setting sun turning the evening sky a glorious pink superbly reflected off the surface of the river just below the house! Oh to be an artist and try to capture the beauty of those evenings. Even so the memories remain strongly and the photos will have to do.
We feel very lucky to have been able to stay at Mont Joie and to have experienced all that the home, village and area can provide, even for such a short period of time. Our hosts were very kind to promptly arrange the return of several items of clothing that I had left during the final pack up.

The property is well equipped, tastefully decorated with magnificent views. It is well looked after by a charming and helpful local lady who only speaks French. It has very limited access by a small car and access on foot is up a short but steep climb up a cobbled street. Dragging heavy suitcases up to the house from where the car has to be parked is a challenge and may be impossible for the inform or elderly. The region is picturesque with rolling hills, the river, many charming villages and imposing castles. There is lot to do up to the end of September. The locals are friendly and most speak good English. Sightseeing involves walking up and down steep streets and multiple stairs, but these challenges are invariably repaid by what is there to be enjoyed. It is a heavily visited region and as a result the tourist industry imposes its own predictability and repetition. Driving is easy if you have a good GPS navigation system. The restaurants around tourist spots have very similar menus. Their food is adequate but usually lacks flair. Dishes which appeal to young children can be difficult to find. All in all a very good place to visit at any age.

There is nothing I can add that has not been already said, except to confirm the truths told below! Mont Joie was absolutely perfect for our family of 4. We enjoyed every patio and terrace, each day! Mornings were spent on the terrace off the master bedroom suite to watch the morning fog lift to reveal the beautiful view. As the sun rose, the teenage daughters enjoyed the sun terrace with commanding views of the river. When it was hot, we enjoyed the covered terrace where we could smell the garlic from a local restaurant. And, the large window by the dining table was often the sight to enjoy the great balloons float across the landscape.
There is a wonderful hidden entrance to the house as well that we utilized more frequently than the front door. This one comes up from the bottom of the terraces and brings you up through the house. It was just charming.
I imagine you will love, as we did, the caretaker, Martine. She is a bundle of joy and energy! We hoped for daily visits as we equated them to a shot of coffee! Don't despair though, she is not intrusive and we welcomed her visits. She just wants to make sure you have what you need and is happy to guide you to a restaurant or provide other helpful information.
The house lacks for nothing... all has been carefully thought through and is awaiting your visit. In fact, the owners are so thoughtful, they arrange for a welcome basket from the local grocer. It has everything you need to begin enjoying the house the moment you arrive! The house was spotless, beds were so comfortable, kitchen was well stocked with very sharp knives (unusual for a rental!), and the bathrooms were decadent. The owners provide very helpful information along the way too... with fantastic communication to assist with planning, and lots of materials at the house to make sure you are able to operate foreign appliances! They are quite different than American brands!
We are already considering when our return trip will be and we hope to stay for longer than one week next time!

There is really nothing more we can say that has not already been said repeatedly in the other reviews. This is an exceptional house in a great little town. The friendly, helpful, gracious approach of the owner and local manager (Martine) was icing on the cake.

Lovely property, fantastically located up the path from the Petit Tonnelle Restaurant in the main street. All amenities including excellent kitchen, laundry, beautiful bathrooms, large comfortable bedrooms. We were a party of four so had access to the two main bedrooms only. Balcony off main bedroom provided excellent large covered space with beautiful vista over the Dourdogne Rr., castles and hills beyond. Large comfortable living room, with views over the river , town and valley, excellent wifi.
Top property, highly recommended. P.S Don't try to drive up from the Petit Tonnelle. Only approach from the Hotel Bonnet direction with a small car.

We could not imagine a more satisfying vacation than our 2 weeks at Mont Joie in picture perfect Beynac. Having spent 3-4 weeks annually in most European countries from Norway to Hungary, Turkey and Sicily over the past 30 years, this year we wanted something special for our family's return to the Dordogne and indeed we found it in Mont Joie. Everything about it was superb including the spectacular setting, the architecture, the tastefulness of its furnishings, the privacy and tranquility, the high level of comfort, the proximity to excellent resources and nearby attractions, the owner's extraordinary attention to detail and responsiveness. We must also mention the exceptionally warm, friendly and helpful Martine who greeted us and was repeatedly helpful to us during our stay and, if you are interested in wildlife, you'll be very pleased with the swans, herons, egrets, ducks and the constant aerial display of the swallows in full view from the great room, the balcony and terraces. Mont Joie is a great value and we are most grateful to the owner for this truly exceptional, most rewarding and memorable experience.

There are NO distortions in their description or their photos: IT WAS PLAIN MAGIC! When you visit a Midieval town that sits beneath a castle, you don't ever think YOU WILL LIVE IN A CASTLE TOO! But this property is like a castle in modern times!
Details: fast fast WIFI, wide open living room window to watch the Dordogne below and the skies above, modern kitchen well stocked for real cooking and leather couches/chairs in living room to lounge, read or contemplate your good fortune to have found this rental.
The owners are saints for having the heart to share this treasure with us!
The "steep walk" up the cobblestone house is only hard once and then it seems like "no big deal" the rest of the stay. Seriously. We are in our late 60's and mid 70's and we did well.
You never have to leave the city (but you will) since the finest of restaurants, patisseries, boulangeries and all the beauty a mideavil town can offer is right there in Beynac!
Oh, did I mention--it is a photographer's dream to capture shots everywhere you look! Inside and outside!
Don't look further, you have found what you are looking for. But hurry, or book ahead for next year!
