The house dates from 1778 – the date is carved above the fireplace in the living room beside the ancient bread oven. The exposed stonework – spot the fossils – and beams exist happily with ‘tout confort moderne’. The spacious kitchen combines farmhouse homeliness with state of the art convenience. There are all the appliances you would expect: oven, microwave, gas and electric hobs, fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher, cafetière, kettle and toaster. There is a modern wood stove, well supplied with logs and kindling. We offer crockery, cutlery and glassware for 12 people, tea towels and pots and pans to please the most serious cook. We also supply a coolbox with ice packs and all the gear you would need for a picnic.
This is a family-friendly house. Pets are welcome; once the gate is closed the garden is dogproof. After welcoming an extended family who lugged a collapsible cot from England, we bought a cot with mattress and sheets, a, high chair, a potty and a changing mat. The garden is child-friendly and we offer a paddling pool (to be used under supervision).
We recently installed a high-performance shower in the family bathroom. Thereby hangs a tale. A family of 8 complained of a paucity of hot bath water, so we replaced the bath with a shower and a bigger hot water cylinder whose airing cupboard stores dozens of towels of all colours and sizes.
Ancient meets modern in the living room. A modern wood stove sits next to an ancient bread oven. The tv and hifi contrast with an ancient stone sink, brought up to date, in the drinks corner under the stairs. An antique English chaise longue coexists with a modern rocker/recliner. An extra bed doubles as a sofa, We offer an electronic keyboard, a variety of books (French and English) for all ages, writing and drawing materials and what our little son used to call ‘bored games’.
The master bedroom is on the ground floor and has en suite facilities. You will find a loft bedroom in a corridor, complete with a ladder, a lamp and a bookcase for bedtime reading. The two upstairs bedrooms feature queen size beds. They also feature low beams. DUCK OR GROUSE signs are on our To Do list!
On Arrival.....
We supply a welcome pack with all you need for your first meal - contents to be agreed beforehand to cater for allergies, etc. Tea, coffee, sugar, etc are all supplied. Visitors get a guided tour of all the facilities, and our contact details. We manage Marcilly for our son who is overseas. We have lived at Maré le Bas, a 10 minute drive from Marcilly, since 2005. Our chief preoccupation is Charity Cottage, an award-winning gîte in our garden which we run in aid of Combat Stress.
The property is situated in Marcilly in the Morvan with its beautiful scenery and countless tourist attractions. Marcilly is in the commune of Cervon, 5 km from Corbigny which offers shops, banks, post office, doctors and dentists, veterinary practice and tourist offices. Visitors would be well advised to do some research beforehand to select the places they most want to see.
We have ticked a great many boxes, but please ask for further details. For example we have ticked "wood turning": the wood turner at St Père displays and sells his work but is unlikely to let you have a go! Caving is confined to show caves. The nearby large lakes offer fishing, sailing, canoeing, boat trips, rambles, etc, and the lake at Lormes (10 km) offers a beach, free swimming and cheap boating. The nearby canal offers boat hire and various trips as well as beautiful walks.
History enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice - check out Autun and Beaune - and there is a dinosaur park, Cardoland, for the children. Do not miss Guédelon, where a château fort is being built using traditional materials and methods.
We did not tick Singing, although the Cité de la Voix at Vézelay offers choral acticities and concerts. Ceramics would be covered by the museum at Nevers, as well as several local potteries.
Markets, brocantes and vide-greniers are a delight, always advertised in the local free newspaper, Le Criquet.
