Le Moulin du Pit is an impressive restored 15th Century water mill near enough to the Dordogne for foie gras and great wines, whilst benefiting from the warmer and drier climate of the Lot.
Thick stone walls, wooden beams, pretty furnishings, geraniums and lush lawns...this is a real home full of charm and warmth. Spacious and comfortable with a superbly equipped kitchen befitting of the hostess who used to be a cookery teacher. When the cook is taking a day off, there is a local restaurant just 500 metres away.
The beautiful gardens provide an attractive setting outside when enjoying the pool or one of the terraces, and can be seen from indoors through the windows like pretty, framed pictures. A stream runs through the vast grounds and under the ancient tower before passing through the surrounding fields of wild flowers (and the occasional deer!) to join the Lot River.
The helpful owners, who keep the place looking immaculate (and are sometimes in residence in their separate home on the estate), love to share plenty of information about the area - local markets, great local restaurants and wineries, canoeing and boating on the lake nearby, as well as little gems like the private chef or food delivery service from the covered market in Cahors, which is only 15km away and steeped in history, beauty and world-renowned wines.
With the Dordogne and the Lot at your doorstep, there is plenty to explore, but staying in and enjoying this lovely home may be even more appealing. A ping-pong table and plenty of games keep the younger ones occupied and the adults can relax knowing that the pool area is completely enclosed.
Le Moulin du Pit is a classic home away from home in beautiful South West France where guests return time and time again.
The mill will comfortably sleep 12. However it can suit smaller groups by not using the top floor. It has a large log fire and central heating, which makes it ideal for the winter period and is perfect for Christmas or New Year breaks.
On the ground floor the entrance hall leads into large open plan dining and living room, separated from the kitchen by a stone fireplace. A large oak table is the focal point of the room (sits 20, plus high chair available), surrounded by authentic stone walls, beams and furnishings. French doors open out onto a south-facing terrace. The kitchen contains all the mod cons as well as Villeroy and Boch china, cutlery and glassware. A cloakroom is also on ground floor along with as well as a telephone (for incoming and local calls) and a CD and tape player.
A beautiful open plan staircase with rope handrails leads to the first floor sitting room. The sitting area has comfy sofa and armchairs (plus TV with French and European satellite channels, DVD, video player and VHS cassette collection). There is also a library (with French doors leading out to peaceful covered balcony overlooking the old mill patio), 2 double bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom and one with an adjacent bathroom. One of the bedrooms is set within the tower, with the most attractive furnishings and its own balcony over the garden and stream. The second bedroom has beautiful views of the rear mill stone patio and the meadow.
The first floor opens up to another staircase with access to large landing and the rest of the accommodation. On the second floor there are 3 further bedrooms, 1 double bedroom and 2 twin single bedrooms. All rooms are nicely furnished with great views of the gardens. There is a large bathroom with bath, WC, hand basin and washing machine and a separate shower room with WC and hand basin.
A final large double bedroom is situated in the tower with an extra adult bed and sofa. All double beds in the house are five feet wide and single beds are 3 feet wide. Two cots and highchairs are available as well as extra beds if necessary. Linen, bath and hand towels are provided.
Outside the south facing terrace is equipped with large teak table and 12 chairs. The terrace at the front of the house contains an old side shot mill and one of the millstones. There is also a selection of garden furniture for use on the terraces and around the brand new private child-safe heated salt-water swimming pool with lockable gates and underwater floodlighting (size: 6mx12m, open approximately end of April to end of September). There are also 10 sunbeds available and a large stone barbecue ideal for entertaining. The generous gardens mean there is plenty of space for games and perfect for children.
The property is accessed by a private drive from a nearby country road. There are bridges over the small River Vert on the far side of the large meadow leading to further fields and walks over our land.

The carefully prepared house book is full of useful information.
Local amenities are in Catus (5km) and include restaurant, cash point, newsagent, supermarket, greengrocers, butchers, boulangerie and a tourist office. In Catus there is also a terrific big lake which offers water sports, boating and free tennis courts (remember to bring your own equipment though). There is also an open-air market here every Tuesday and a Michelin star restaurant only 9km away.
Cahors (15km) offers a larger choice of shops, supermarkets and restaurants. It is a beautiful Roman town surrounded by the River Lot with good shopping, restaurants and twice weekly markets (Wednesday and Saturday). Explore the ancient streets and old buildings and take advantage of the numerous sightseeing opportunities (Pont Valentre, Resistance Museum and the Cathedral). Cahors vineyards also come recommended for wine tasting.
Visit Chateau Caix, loved by the Danish royal family and La Grezette-Cartier family amongst others. The dramatic road by the River Lot eastwards from Cahors through rock features and archways takes you to the fascinating hilltop village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
Other recommended places to explore are Sarlat (45-50 min), an ancient market town full of artists and cafes. Nearby you will also find the amazing New Exhibition Centre of the world famous Lascaux Caves as well as the World Heritage UNESCO site of Rocamadour and the underground caverns of the Gouffre de Padirac, visited by boat.
To the south west is Cordes-sur-Ciel (80km) a small hilltop town with chic boutiques and Arts & Crafts shops and some guests may wish to drive to the famous UNESCO Medieval City of Carcassonne (230km).
Local activities include walking/cycling (a range of books of walks in the house and a more extensive range at the local tourist office), several golf courses in the region, boating on the river Lot and the nearby villages that host weekend summer fetes. The Tour de France even passes through this region if you’re here at the right time.
