In a prime location in northern Dordogne, within walking distance to the beautiful town of Brantôme, Maison Bolivar is a delightful home for relaxed holidays with family or friends, discovering the idyllic villages and stunning landscapes of the Perigord-Vert.
Set on a small hill looking over the River Dronne, this 200-year old family home offers comfort, character and charm in traditional surroundings. Sleeping up to eight guests with three double bedrooms and bathrooms, there is plenty of space over its various levels including two pretty living areas and a large kitchen-diner. It’s a cosy retreat in the cooler months when the log fire is burning in the living room – snuggle up watching Netflix or DVDs and create hearty feasts by the warmth of the Aga in the kitchen. In the summer open the French doors to the lovely terraces and enjoy the gentle views of the Dronne and Dordogne countryside.
Wander down the stairs to the inviting swimming pool, laze on the sun deck with its loungers and enjoy al-fresco meals by the barbecue under the wooden pergola. Little stone steps also lead down to a garden area, ideal for children playing or picnics in the sun. There’s a relaxed ambience throughout this rustic home and gardens that will appeal to guests at any time of year.
Brantôme can be reached in around twenty minutes or so, strolling through the picturesque forest paths that surround this area. It’s one of the Dordogne’s prettiest towns, set on the banks of the river with its impressive abbey and beautiful medieval lanes. Enjoy typical Périgordine cuisine at local restaurants, discover lovely shops and take peaceful walks by the riverside. There are leisurely boat trips in the summer or admire Brantôme’s stunning scenery as you canoe along the Dronne.
You are also close to traditional market towns, scenic villages, amazing châteaux and the wonderful countryside of the Perigord-Vert, ideal for walking, cycling and horse-riding. Périgueux, half an hour away and the capital of the Dordogne, is known for its fine architecture, historic treasures and culinary delights or stay closer to home and visit one of the region’s oldest villages, Bourdeilles, with its famous château, just 7km by car.
The landscaped Jardins Tranquilles can also be reached by walking along the river, not far from your home. After all this exploring, return to the serenity of Maison Bolivar with a glass of wine in hand, appreciating your time in this enchanting part of the Dordogne.

Set just outside the town in a countryside setting amongst a handful of houses, follow a pretty forest path for a relaxed 20 to 30 minutes and you will find yourselves in the heart of Brantôme (or it’s just a five-minute drive away). Sitting on the River Dronne, this is an incredibly picturesque town with wonderful restaurants, charming shops and a lovely Friday morning market. The architecture is exquisite, dating back to the Renaissance and medieval periods and the town’s abbey is especially note-worthy. A visit to the troglodytes caves is also a must.
The town is often referred to as ‘Venice of the Dordogne’ due to its idyllic waterways. Hiring a canoe is a wonderful way to admire the scenery or you could take a boat trip along the river. There are also many peaceful riverside walks - wander as far as Les Jardins Tranquilles, a landscaped garden that can be visited from May to the end of September (views of which you can see from your holiday home – just walk home via the river afterwards).
Bourdeilles (7km) is another incredible village to visit, dating back to the 10th century and home to the well-known Château de Bourdeilles. Sunday morning is a particularly delightful time to visit with its vibrant market selling delicious local produce.
Food-lovers will also appreciate Riberac (35km) with one of the area’s best markets on a Friday morning (look out for seasonal black truffles, foie gras and walnuts), perhaps then travelling onwards to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (50km) with its fascinating historical sites and listed as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. A little closer to home, the pretty riverside village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle (22km) is also one of France’s classified prettiest villages and a pleasant place to spend some time.
Périgueux (25km), the capital of the Dordogne department, is another remarkable place to visit with attractive medieval lanes, bustling Saturday morning market, 11th century cathedral and Roman remains.
Other note-worthy historic sites in the region include the famous Château de Puyguilhem (17km) and Château de Jumilhac (50km) with its stunning gardens.
There’s no shortage of leisure activities with endless walking and cycling trails through the Perigord-Vert where you can discover rolling hills, vast forests, streams and rocky plateaus. Golf can be found near Périgueux and there is a horse-riding school within half an hour.
