Maison Vignoble, overlooking its own beautiful vineyard orchard, retains all its original character in ancient oak and granite. This cottage with traditional period features in situated in a pretty, peaceful and rural hamlet within the Parc Naturel Regional Perigord Limousin - it is incredibly quiet here. Surrounded by beautiful woodland countryside, yet ideally situated for a variety of excursions.
The cottage and outdoor space
Entering from the pretty garden there is
- A bright, comfortable living room and dining area, with exposed stone walls and large beams. There is also a cosy wood burning stove, and television with UK Freesat box or French channels should you wish.
- The separate, generous sized kitchen is well equipped with Fridge and Freezer, Washing Machine, electric oven with ceramic hob, coffee maker, toaster and all necessary utensils and crockery.
- The second double bedroom is also located downstairs, as is the large shower room with toilet and wash basin.
Upstairs,
- The Master Bedroom with king size bed commands stunning views over the vineyard and has its own en-suite bathroom with toilet, bath and over-bath shower, wash basin and bidet.
Outside there is
- An attached colourful little garden which benefits from the shade of an Indian Bean Tree with private terrace and BBQ for outdoor dining or relaxing, and in the large vineyard orchard there is also an additional seating area with Pergola where you can make the most of the peace and tranquility whilst watching the local bird life.
Parking
Off road parking is available for 2 cars, with one of these parking spaces being in the barn under cover.
Visitor Suitability
Since I began running the cottage as a Gite over nine years ago, visitors of all ages have enjoyed a comfortable holiday here. The downstairs bedroom is easily accessible, and the vineyard orchard offers a vast space for children to enjoy. However, due to the age of the building and narrow doorway, regretfully the cottage is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Additional Information
The owner will meet you on arrival at the cottage, and is happy to recommend places to visit, restaurants etc and lives only a short distance away should you need assistance at any time; there is also a very detailed handbook which informs you of everything that you need to know for your stay as well as a selection of tourist leaflets and walking trail maps. An Iron and Ironing Board is provided, as is quality bed linen, kitchen towels and bath mats, and efficient oil filled radiators are available should you need them. Free wi-fi broadband allows easy internet access during your stay, and there is a good selection of books to choose from, as well as a boules set and some other games.
With its beautiful, tranquil location and proximity to a vast array of attractions, Maison Vignoble is the ideal place for all the family to enjoy a relaxing break and explore this unique and picturesque region of France.
Maison Vignoble is perfectly placed for visitors to explore the best that this region has to offer.
Walks from the Doorstep
For those keen to keep active, there is immediate access to a network of signposted paths and trails for all abilities, perfect for walking or mountain biking; it is a nature lovers paradise at any time of the year be it Spring, Summer or Autumn, with spectacular scenery and a great variety of wildlife. The quiet country roads are also ideal for cycling. Maps are available in the cottage.
Local Markets
Piegut, only 7 minutes away has a bustling weekly Wednesday morning market, the most famous in the region, and is not to be missed, along with a good selection of boulangeries, some shops and a supermarket. There are also good weekly markets at Nontron and Brantome. In addition, from June to August the local towns of Champniers-Reilhac and Saint-Mathieu host alternate weekly night markets where you can purchase from local producers, have your food cooked and enjoy live music. It is an excellent way to mix with the locals, are similar markets are also held in other surrounding towns, details of which can be found within the house handbook. During the summer months there are regular weekend fetes in the surrounding towns and villages where the local produce, crafts and traditions are celebrated and sampled - highlights include the flower fete at Saint-Jean-de-Cole held every May, the chestnut fete at Dournazac every October, the fete at Saint-Bazile in August and the the fete foraine at Oradour-sur-Vayres.
Swimming Lakes
The local swimming lakes of Saint-Mathieu and Saint-Estephe are both equidistant from the cottage and around 10 minutes away, each with a beach and wooded area perfect for a picnic, or there is a little snack bar and restaurant at Saint-Estephe. There is another swimming lake at Bussiere-Galant 40 minutes away which offers water sports and other outdoor activities too.
Restaurants, Food and Wine
The Perigord Limousin is famed and proud of its food history - as mentioned above, various local fetes take place throughout the year as well as various night markets and the local markets are an excellent place to purchase regional delicacies. Piegut has a good choice of restaurants, and there are plenty of additional recommendations available within the handbook at the cottage. The nearest supermarkets are at Piegut and Saint-Mathieu, with fresh bread and croissants available from local artisan boulangeries.
Places to visit in brief...
- At the town of Brantome it is easy to spend the entire day; wander around the weekly Friday market, pretty cobbled streets and riverside park, journey up the river by guided boat tour or under your own steam by canoe, visit the magnificent Abbey and caves, browse the array of little shops and choose from a variety of restaurants to enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner. Brantome, known as 'the Venice of the Perigord', and surely one of the true gems of the Dordogne region, is less than a 40 minute drive from Maison Vignoble.
- The amazing prehistoric caves at Grotte de Villars, close to Brantome, are a must see when exploring this area. Full of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as some prehistoric cave drawings, it is the largest discovered in the Perigord region and viewed by guided tour.
- With beautiful views over the Bandiat valley, a 20 minute drive from Maison Vignoble is the town of Nontron, famous across France for it knives and one of the oldest knife-making institutions in the country.
- The town of Rochechouart, with its beautiful walled town watched over by a magnificent chateau is only a 20 minute drive away, with Cassinomagnus one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe 5 minutes outside the town near Chassenon.
- Oradour-sur-Glane, and the thought provoking and powerful Centre de la Memoire with the town left just as it was after the massacre of 642 of its inhabitants by a Nazi Waffen-SS company on 10 June 1944.
- The cities of Limoges, capital of the Haute-Vienne department and famous worldwide for its porcelain history, and Perigueux, capital of the Dordogne - both are very interesting and pretty cities with many shops and pretty old towns.
- A number of beautiful Chateau are within each reach - Chateau de Bourdeilles (worth a visit just for its pretty village alone), Chateau de Puyguilhem, Chateau Montbrun, Chateau de Brie and Chateau de Hautefort.
- Segur-le-Chateau, Saint-Jean-de-Cole, The National Stud at Pompadour, and Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche are also worth a visit.

This accommodation and area are perfect if you want to switch off all your cares! The house is so lovely and fully equipped to cater for all your needs. Carrie has furnished Maison Vignoble to a very high standard. We enjoyed two perfect weeks here and so enjoyed the garden. Perfect to eat outside or just sit with a glass and wine and listen to/watch the birds. One robin so tame it followed us around, think it would have eaten from our hand! There is also a lovely garden across the small road with vines and a pergola. Carrie welcomed us like old friends and left us a multitude of goodies. If we needed her she was always available. Visits to Brantome, St Jean de Cole and the many chateaux are a must. Daytime markets a joy. Very close is Etang de Saint-Estephe, great to walk around plus a good restaurant. Would thoroughly recommend a holiday here.Guest rating:
