Converted Old Railway Station
This home is an old railway station part of which is a self-contained gîte. Situated just outside the medieval hilltop village of Montreal. The village is well equipped with many village shops, including a bakery, butchers, bank (with cash machine), post office, doctors, pharmacy, bar/restaurant and a café, tennis courts etc.
The gite originally was the cargo halls of the station. It has been renovated with an emphasis on quality while retaining the original character of the building. Comprising of:
Ground Floor
- Kitchen / diner - fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, Nespresso machine etc. There are large double doors opening onto the garden. Leading off from the kitchen there is: A separate washing machine area and a large storeroom.
- Sitting room - with double doors leading on to a private covered decked terrace, the old platform, with steps leading down to the garden to where originally the railway line ran. The terrace is westerly facing so a great spot to enjoy the afternoon sun and spectacular sunsets. There is plenty of garden furniture supplied as well as a gas barbecue.
- Bedroom 1 - large room with a queen size bed (160cm) and large ensuite bathroom with toilet that can also be accessed, if wished, from the living area.
First Floor
Stairs leading from the lounge:
- Bedroom 2 - with queen size bed (160cm)
- Bedroom 3 - with queen size bed (160cm)
- Bathroom - with toilet
Stairs leading from the kitchen:
- Bedroom 4 - with two single beds and washbasin
- Mezzanine - small lounge area with TV and reading area.
All the bedrooms are large with ample space to accommodate a cot, which can be supplied. A high chair as well as other baby equipment is available if needed. The property has wi-fi connection.
Outside
The pool, shared only with us, is 5 m x 11.5 m with a large surrounding area. It is totally enclosed making it safer for children while adding to your privacy. The pool water is U.V. light treated, therefore being kinder than other pool treatments. There is plenty of pool furniture including a covered daybed. The property is set in approximately 1 ha of enclosed land. There are swings & a slide, a trampoline with net and a large treehouse.
Places of interest within easy reach:
- The fortified town of Carcassonne: The "Cite" is a medieval walled city with ramparts, which is the largest fortress in Europe. (20 mins).
- Cathar country: There are many castles and abbeys you can visit in this area dating back to the thirtieth century. (Approx. 40 mins).
- Mediterranean beaches: Miles of sandy beaches to suit all. (Less than 1 hr to the east).
- The Pyrenees: (1hr south).
- Further a field the duty free principality of Andorra. (1.5 hrs). The Spanish border is not too far away (80 mins) with Barcelona 3 hrs away.
- Canal du Midi: Running from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean coasts. The banks of the canal provide a shady walking/cycling track. Boats can be hired and tours can be easily arranged. The nearest point from us is the market town of Bram. (10 mins).
- Wine tasting: Many regions providing fine wines are on the doorstep, for example, Corbieres, Fitou, Minervois and of course the famous Blanquette de Limoux to mention but a few. Most large wineries are open for wine tasting and can be combined with other trips.
- Golf: Numerous inexpensive courses including the Carcassonne course, which commands fine views of the Cite (20 mins).
- Skiing: Many good resorts in the Pyrenees, which have the advantage of not having the crowds of the better-known areas. The nearest to the property is Mont D'Olmes which is a great family resort and is only 75 mins. There are many other resorts not much further a field.
- Kayaking/white water rafting: The Aude and The Ariege provide many rapids for all levels (up to grade 6). Equipment can be hired.
- Karting: There are a few circuits with the nearest being only 15 mins. away.
- Wind surfing: Is available on the lakes near Carcassonne or Castelnaudry (both 20 mins). For more challenging conditions the inland lagoons along the Mediterranean coast is a magnet for windsurfers.
- Markets: Local French markets are something not to be missed. The most noteworthy is at Mirepoix on Monday mornings. (25 mins).
- Horse riding, cycling, tennis, walking or just taking it easy by the pool, are just some of the things you can do.
All times above are by car

This was an excellent gite. It was spacious, extremely well-kept and and very well equipped. Everything which helps - whether lots of fridge and freezer space, to an ice dispenser, to wifi (so essential to my kids), to fans if you needed them - seemed to have been provided. The old station is a lovely old building, with lovely grounds around it, and the gite is attached alongside. You walk along what is the disused rail track, now grass and wild mint covered, around the corner of the old station to the wonderful swimming pool. The gite is down a quiet little road, near to Montreal where there is a supermarket and other shops (though avoid the leaden pain au chocolats in the boulangerie), within striking distance of the major road which crosses the south of France from the Atlantic to the Med, and therefore giving easy access to other areas. We (two adults and three students) thoroughly enjoyed staying at this gite, and would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Guest rating:
You take a leap of faith when you book accommodation directly with an owner over the internet despite the testimonials of others. How wonderful for it to pay off as much as this did for us. The property itself is perfectly equipped as holiday accommodation right down to the ice-dispensing fridge freezer (a must in the two weeks of 30+ weather we experienced). The major attraction of this property for us was the fantastic pool - large, warm, and cleaned daily it formed the centrepiece of many days of the holiday as it was just too good to tear ourselves away from. We deliberately chose the property on the basis of the size of the pool and this worked out brilliantly. The grounds were huge and featured a trampoline, chickens, swings and a tree house - all of which were great for our children (8,9 and 9). There is a ridiculously convenient supermarket about 500 yards away on the edge of the village (with its own pharmacy and restaurants) but you are situated in the middle of the beautiful Aude countryside. Further afield, we would recommend Carcassonne (La Cite), more Cathar castles than you can shake a stick at, caves and the beach at Narbonne. There was much more to do as well but we simply didn't have the time.
A great property in a great location - thoroughly recommended! 5/5

L'Ancienne Gare proved to be a very well appointed gite. Everything was provided for! We had a great time and wished we could have stayed longer! Thank you Sara!
Guest rating:
The house was very well equipped with everything you would need for a family holiday and more! It was very clean and modern.
The location was close to the motorway which gave easy access to the south east coast as well as Spain.
The children loved the swimming pool and the trampoline and they could run around to their hearts content as the garden is very secluded from traffic.
I would recommend this to families as it is ideal. Our children were 2 1/2 and 4 at the time.
Guest rating:
Our party was made up of 5 adults and 1 child and we found L'Ancienne Gare a very comfortable house with spacious rooms and a very sunny garden where the owners have really worked to ensure that your stay is pleasurable. The pool was heated, so lovely whatever the time of day, and a real asset for us, and after a hard day relaxing, swimming and sightseeing, a glass of wine on the old platform was a perfect end to the day.
We found the location excellent for sightseeing, walking and cycling, with the old railway track passing nearby which is now a public footpath we explored much of the local area. We ate in both the local village restaurants, one in the hotel with a traditional menu and the other a pizza house. Both were excellent value and great food - and with a 20 minute walk (downhill on the way home!) each way, you could almost feel virtuous as well!
