Villa with Own Pool
Agel is situated in the east of the Minervois wine region between Narbonne and Carcassonne within easy reach of both the Mediterranean beaches and the region's airports.
Agel is a picturesque typically French village that dates back to Roman times, set on the River Cesse and a short drive from the Canal du Midi (at Argeliers or La Somail) and the Lac de Jouarres with beaches for swimming and water sports. The Mediterranean beaches (Narbonne) and the mountains are about half an hour away by car.
The region is renowned for fresh fruit, olives and particularly wine (many AOC vineyards within easy reach and a 'cave' in the village of Agel) as well as the beautiful scenery. The Canal du Midi is a World Heritage Site and can be reached by car in 10 minutes (a little longer by bicycle).
Agel is small (166 friendly inhabitants) and has a post office, daily deliveries of bread and croisants and various other trades deliver regularly (list on request). There is a municipal tennis court. The villages of Bize Minervois and Aigues Vives are each about 3 km away and each has a good range of shops, bars and restaurants. There are many other restaurants in the surrounding area. A large supermarket is 10 minutes away at St Marcel.
The Villa is on the edge of the village of Agel on a small development of similar properties. The river is less than 100 metres from the villa and the village with post office and tennis court are a 2 minute walk away.
The villa is fully equipped for up to 6/8 persons and has:
- Kitchen - fitted, including large oven, halogen hob, microwave, dishwasher
- Living room - large open plan room, equipped with 3 comfortable sofas (one converts to a double bed with metal sprung frame), large dining table and six chairs, wood burning stove (only needed for mid-winter lets), hi-fi (including CD Player), satellite TV and patio doors opening on to terrace
- Bedroom 1 - with double bed
- Bedroom 2 - with twin beds
- Bedroom 3 - with twin beds
- Bathroom - including WC
- Shower room - including WC.
Outside
Terrace with built-in barbecue and alfresco dining area with gazebo to provide shade, steps leading down to garden with lawns and flowerbeds.
Swimming pool 7 x 3.5m plus roman steps (lovely to sit on when the weather is very hot!).
Other facilities include bicycles, garden furniture and barbecue. There is ample parking for several cars on the driveway. The grounds are fully fenced.
There are many sites of interest within easy travelling distance of Agel. The ancient city of Minerve clings to the side of a gorge carved by water flowing for 40 million years and is 10 minutes away by car. Carcassonne and Narbonne are each half an hour away by car.
If you prefer you can drive to the beaches of the Mediterranean near Narbonne or to escape the heat of the day go up into the Montagnes Noire or the Pyrenees. The principality and tax haven of Andorra is a suitable destination for a day trip and the Spanish border is less than two hours away.
Some of our guests enjoy a trip to Rennes le chateau, Montsegur and the other ancient Cathar strongholds. The fortified town of Carcassonne is another popular day-trip.

Just a few words to say what a relaxing three weeks we had staying at this lovely villa in the very quiet village of Agel. Three weeks of wall to wall sunshine and to cap it all the Chateau d'Agel next door was a perfect neighbour. Following a wine tasting with an English gentlemen called Joseph working at the vineyard, we came back to the U.K with 75 litres of French nectar! The pool was easy to keep clean saving Gaye from making the trek to do it for us once a week. The villa is well equipped and very comfortable. So much we did not want to leave. Lots of lovely places to visit and also lots of great restaurants. Set three course meals for 16-19 euros were faultless. We will be back!Guest rating:
We stayed at the villa in May in the middle of a 7 week tour of France. It was lovely to stay in such a spacious, cool and well-equipped house. It is tucked away in a tiny village, but is a good base for touring the delights of the Minervois hills with their vineyards and perched villages in the Herault, and also the Canal de Midi and the ancient city of Carcassonne in the Aude. The Mediterranean Sea is not too far away, and we enjoyed visits to Gruisson and Peyrac-sur-Mer. There are many other places worthy of a visit visit so we will have to come back!Guest rating:
We have just returned from three weeks at this lovely villa. We visited with two friends and our two dogs. The villa is very spacious and Very well equipped. The two bathrooms are a bonus for two couples and the washing machine was very useful for our extended stay. We ate most of our meals on the lovely sheltered terrace overlooking the pool. English TV is provided and the Internet connection was excellent. The area around the villa is perfect for dog walking and we also visited lots of other villages. There is also a wine chateau next door Chateau D,Agel where you can taste and buy the wine which happens to be excellent. We visited a few times in our three weeks and were given free bottles on a couple of occasions to take back and try. I would recommend the restaurant Auberge du Somail in Le Somail on the canal du midi. A lovely spot to walk and then eat. The small cafe bar in Minerve is also worth visiting. All in all we had a great holiday and hope to return at some stage in the future.Guest rating:
We had a lovely peaceful 4 weeks during the wine harvest. Wonderful weather, wonderful walks, wonderful sunsets, wonderful cycling around deserted roads. The villa, situated in a secluded close just next to Agel village, is well equipped. The lovely pool was great to cool down in the afternoon sun.Guest rating:
Nice well equipped Villa in peaceful setting on the edge of village next to Chateau Angel vineyard. The village is very quiet and we had some nice walks around the village and surrounding areas. The pool at the Villa is nice and secluded and was very welcome for cooling off during the hot weather we had during our stay. The lovely English lady owner, Gaye, popped in to clean the pool and make sure everything was OK, which it was. When we left she very kindly gave us a box of her homegrown tomatoes and a bottle of local wine. One of the many good things about the Villa is its excellent internet connection, which although we were on holiday, enabled us to keep in touch with things at home ( of course you can turn it off and just enjoy the peace and quite! ) All in all a nice well equipped Villa set in a peaceful setting among the vineyards of SW France. A lovely house in Agel in a beautiful setting. Great kitchen/ living room as well as an outside eating area by the pool - perfect for hot summer evenings! The pool was a good size and perfect for children and adults alike. The small village of Agel is perfect for a relaxing holiday and there are lots of beautiful walks around the area. Several nearby villages are easily accessible by car or bike.Guest rating:
