Pretty cottage for 2 with pool, private fishing lake in unspoilt countryside
Chez Carreau is located in the Perigord Limousin Natural Regional Park and stands in its own 5 acre grounds with mature gardens, surrounded by chestnut and pine woods in the unspoilt countryside of the Dordogne/Haute Vienne.
Le Cottage is the original farmer's cottage at Chez Carreau and dates back 150 years. There is a restored stone barn attached to the right of the property which is occupied by the owners. Le Cottage is totally self contained with independent access.
Le cottage has been tastefully restored to a high standard. The accommodation comprises open plan, well equipped kitchen/dining/sitting room on the ground floor and double bedroom with en-suite shower room above. There is UK TV, DVD Player and hi-fi system for your use. A lawned garden area with patio furniture and barbecue is located immediately in front of the accommodation. There is also a swimming pool and private fishing lake available for your use.
The accommodation has full central heating and is therefore suitable for winter breaks.

Chez Carreau is set in 5 acres of mature gardens and woodland in the heart of the beautiful French countryside. Our nearest village is Marval (3 miles away) and our nearest town St Mathieu (approx 4 miles).
All around we have beautiful countryside with endless wooded lanes for walking and the whole area is full of wildlife. There are deer, pine marten, wild boar, red squirrel and many types of birds, including birds of prey.
We are situated on the south west edge of the Haute Vienne, just 3 miles north of the department of the Dordogne and 4 miles east of the department of Charentes. Our region is known for having many lakes with well kept beaches that offer endless opportunities for swimming and sunbathing, fishing, and walking. The lakes also have bars and good restaurant facilities on site. Our nearest lakes with beaches, bar and restaurant facilities are St Estephe, St Mathieu and Bussiere Gallant, all less than half an hours drive.
There are many activities organised locally including concerts, walks, and fetes of all kinds. During July and August, there are evening markets where local farmers come to sell their produce. It is a street party atmosphere and chefs with BBQs are on hand to cook your purchases. There is music and dancing and everything provided for a great evening out.
Cycle hire is available locally and Brantome and Montbron offer canoe hire.

We stayed in Le Cottage for about two weeks. The accommodation is compact but has all you need. The owners, David and Rosemarie, live right next door. That was great - they were keen to provide info about local events and places to visit etc, but never intruded and nothing was too much trouble. There's plenty of space and the swimming pool is lovely. There were markets and evening BBQs in nearby villages (held in the summer only, we assume) and many places of interest to visit. There are fine chateaux, extensive broadleaf forests and fields of red Limousin cattle - timber and beef appear to be the main products of the area. You can access the forests and there are lots of trails to walk, including many signed (but empty) circuits for which you can obtain free leaflets from local tourist information offices (there are plenty of these leaflets, plus maps and other info in the gite). There are miles of great roads to cycle, many of them shaded by trees which is good in hot weather. (We have left our water- and sweat-proof cycling maps in the gite for future visitors and I - Bill - am happy to be contacted via David and Rosemarie by anyone who would like some pointers on best roads/routes to ride.) We stayed in the gite which is independent of the house situated in the beautiful garden. It's our second visit and we intend to return. Rosemarie and David are an interesting couple, at times keeping a low profile but when instigated, are very friendly and informative. The gite is very sweet and it has a comfortable bed. There is plenty of out-door space, bbq etc. and the swimming pool is fantastic. A short walk through the woods leads to a magical lake,we've seen all sorts of birds and on one occasion a Pine Martin! There are many places to visit around the area and the city of Limoges is wonderful.Guest rating:
This is a lovely gite, one of the best we have stayed at in France. Ideal for couples who just want to relax. It is set in a beautiful well looked after garden with a very clean and excellently maintained pool available for use by visitors. The cottage is very clean, nicely presented and well equipped with everything you could need. The bed is comfortable and the lovely white bed linen and soft towels add the finishing touches. The private garden area and barbecue are an added bonus. We have been 4 times now and we will be returning. We highly recommend this property.
