Meschers Sur Gironde (Charente-Maritime)
Meschers Sur Gironde is a small fishing port on the banks of the Gironde where you’ll find beautiful beaches and breathtaking walks along the cliff tops.
Set into the cliffs is a fascinating series of troglodyte caves which can be visited. These were inhabited throughout the centuries and were a refuge for the Protestants in the religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The last of the inhabitants only left in 1906. You can see reconstructions of how the caves looked when they were inhabited. The caves were also used as an unusual restaurant during La Belle Epoque and you can see reconstructions of this too. Nearby are lovely sandy beaches.
