Puy-de-Dome
The Puy-de-Dôme department is part of the Auvergne region and is named after the lava dome of an extinct volcano of the same name
The Puy de Dôme is one of the most visited sites in the Auvergne region and an area of outstanding natural beauty, attracting nearly 500,000 visitors a year. It is a well-known centre for paragliding. The summit offers expansive views of the Chaîne des Puys and Clermont-Ferrand.
This region is an outdoor paradise and is popular for both summer and winter holidays. The area is great for walking, cycling, and rock climbing as well as fishing, canoeing and watching the wildlife. Skiing is also popular in winter.
The dome itself rises to 1465 metres and the panoramic view from the top is unforgettable. There is a visitors centre at the top which houses a exhibition about the volcanoes and various other local sites of interest.
The volcanic domes of the Puy-de Dome department
The capital of the department is Clermont-Ferrand. The old town is centred around the cathedral Notra-Dame-de-l'Assumption and the place de la Victoire. Here you will find quaint old fashioned fountains and houses with lava stone courtyards.
The cathedral is a lovely Gothic church dating from the 13th century and is unusual because it is the only cathedral made of black volcanic stone in France.
