Toulouse (Haute-Garonne)
Toulouse, with its beautiful historic centre, is one of the most vibrant and metropolitan provincial cities in France.
At the heart of the Midi Pyrenees region, Toulouse has always occupied an important place in the South-West of France. 2000 years of history is evident in a architecture of brick and tiles that is typical of the cities, villages and farms of this region. The reflections of the sun on the brick of Toulouse have earned it the name of the ‘Ville Rose’ giving an atmosphere to the city that is at both gentle and warm.
Toulouse is France’s fourth biggest city and has a very lively atmosphere with a strong student presence. Stroll around the historic centre, walking alongside the Garonne and the Canal du Midi, or stop in one of the many pavement cafés for a delicious cup of coffee!
Toulouse is also a major shopping centre. You will find all the major well known brands in fashion, design, leather goods and jewellery here in the first rate shops.
The Midi-Pyrenees is one of the South-West’s most important gastronomic regions and Toulouse has lots of open-air and covered markets in which you will find local products from the region. Produce includes some delicious wines and cheeses, charcuterie, foie gras, and the famous speciality dish of the region, Cassoulet which is made with white beans, duck or goose confit, meat and sausages.
The long history of Toulouse has left it rich in a heritage that is representative of the southern French style at various moments in its history. Not to be missed is the Saint-Sernin basilica which is a jewel of 11th and 12th century Roman art. It is the burial place of Saint Saturnin, the third century first bishop of Toulouse. The Jacobins convent buildings are famous for their Southern-French gothic architecture including the amazing “palm-tree”, a pillar from which twenty-two branches radiate.
At the heart of the antique dealer’s quarter, the Saint Etienne cathedral shows the the evolution of several styles of sacred architecture.
The city is also very rich in Renaissance townhouses: hôtel de Bernuy, hôtel d’Assézat and hôtel de Pierre. The Capitole, currently the City Hall has magnificently decorated historic rooms and an immense place with an Occitan cross.
There are so many different faces of Toulouse, from its numerous churches, its museums and galleries to the space centre (Cité de l'espace). As you wander around the city you will discover the charms of the Ville Rose for yourself.
