About Fontenay Le Comte in Vendée, Pays de La Loire
It is a pleasant 10 minute walk into Fontenay le Comte, which is a bustling town with a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants. There is a hypermarket within 5 minutes drive from the house, and another a short drive across town. The oldest part of town is charming and beautifully lit at night.
Fontenay is ideally placed to enable you to enjoy the nearby coast or countryside. A 20 minute drive takes you to the Mervent forest with walks, cycle tracks and a lake with boats for hire in season.
Within 30 minutes to one hour’s drive there are various pretty towns and villages, all with something to offer the visitor. One example is Vouvant. This picturesque village on a bend in the River Vendee is known for its artists and there are beautiful walks around the walls of it’s ruined castle.
From Fontenay head towards the coast and La Rochelle and you find yourself in the Marais Poitevin. This is an area of quiet waterways where you can take boat trips or hire boats. Again, walking, cycling and fishing are all available.
La Rochelle is always worth a visit with it’s smart shops, atmospheric cafes, bars and restaurants and the beautiful old port. Further afield there is Les Sables D’Olonne, which is a larger coastal resort with long sandy beaches.
There are a variety of gardens, chateaux, abbeys, tourist attractions and museums in the area, and you can go to the Vendee tourism website at www.vendee-tourisme.com for more information.
For grander days out Le Puy du Fou (www.puydufou.com) or Futuroscope at Poitiers (www.futuroscope.com) are easily accessible.
There are three very pleasant local wines; Pissotte, Mareuil and Vix, all with accessible vineyards which are only a short drive from Fontenay.
For those interested in golf, there are courses at La Rochelle, Niort, Maziere-en-Gatine and near Roche-sur-Yonne, all of which are between 35 minutes and 1 hour away.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.

Our stay in your house was wonderful; the weather was fantastic; it's location is perfect (easy walking distance into the town, while still quiet in it's immediate surroundings), and the house itself is lovely. A perfect combination and we would recommend your property highly.

The house is excellent - we were 8 people (including 4 older teenagers) but did not feel short of space at all. Furnishings and equipment also great (photos do not do it justice!). Definitely amongst the best we have stayed in in over 15 years of self-catering in France and Italy.
