Where is it

Dordogne

This beautiful period country house built in 1663 with its guesthouse, courtyard and mature gardens was offered for rental for the first time last year. Situated between the picturesque village of Saint Geniés and the famous medieval market town of Sarlat and close to Salignac it offers a wonderful holiday location.

You approach the house through gates and up a tree-lined drive. The property is enclosed on all sides giving both privacy and security. A spacious courtyard with a small covered terrace and a pain au four separates the main house and guesthouse. The stonework and laves roof are original and a special feature of this lovely house.

The location is peaceful and quiet and yet not isolated. Salignac and Saint Geniés are within minutes by car. There is an excellent boulangerie in Salignac, providing you do not bake your own in the pain au four. We are assured that customers travel as far as 15-20 kms for this quite superb bread maker. The wonderful bustling medieval market town of Sarlat is only 10 kms with the Dordogne Valley close by.

About the location

The River Dordogne, which has given its name to this favorite holiday area, an area always known for its good living. Palaeolithic man lived here in rock shelters and left behind the world's first record of man the artist. A remarkable collection of cave paintings and engravings has been discovered in the valleys of the Dordogne and its tributary the Vezere, the most famous of which are at Lascaux and Les Eyzies [the capital of prehistory]. Hundreds of chateau and many fortified towns bastides such as Domme bare witness to the troubled Middle Ages when England clashed with France. Many medieval towns and villages are beside or near the river, Beynac, Vitrac, Montfort, La Roque Gageac and the most famous of all Sarlat. The golden-bricked houses and courtyards of Old Sarlat form the most authentically medieval town in France.

Le Bugue is surrounded by wooded hills and built in terraces on the bank of a bend in the river Vezére. This little town is referred to as the golden gate to prehistory and one of the main localities in Black Perigord. A large, remarkably equipped aquarium museum, the Bara-Bahau cave, Saint Cirq du Bugue, the prehistoric site of La Farrassie and the castle at Fleurac are close by.

Rouffignac gives tourists the chance to take a journey to the centre of the earth by visiting the Grotte des Cent Mammoths (the cave of a hundred mammoths) by a little electric train. This vast cave has never been closed and has been receiving visitors since the 16 century.

Les Eyzies commonly introduced as the world's prehistoric capital. The most varied prehistoric and historic, styles and period are represented here making this the town for traveling through the past.

Sarlat the geographical centre of Périgord-Quercy is by far the most important tourist site in the region and boasts one of the largest medieval urban areas [13 to 16 centuries] in the world. Over 30 films have been shot in the capital of the Black Périgord and it has become the third centre for filming after Paris and Nice. There is a picturesque market on Wednesdays and numerous festivals are held during the season. Canoe and Kayak enthusiast's, children or beginners, can explore the Périgord by river. A trip can last as long as you wish and you will be picked up when you finish and driven back to your starting point by bus. The shallow waters make it safe for all the family.

Montagnac and Lascaux, the small town of 3000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Vezére, owes its fame to the discovery in 1940 of the "eighth wonder of the world" the Lascaux cave. The cave discovered by four small boys is the finest of all prehistoric painted caves and is believed to date as far back as 15000BC. Hautefort Castle perched on a hill it can be spotted from afar. Dating back to 1588 its "Louis X1V" style comes as quite a surprise in this region.
