LOCAL INFORMATION
Saint Antonin Noble Val, historically a stopping point on the pilgrimage path to Santiago de Compostela, is a Medieval town located at the entrance of the gorges of Aveyron. As you enter Saint Antonin by car from Toulouse, you have a few restaurants on your left hand side, and the bank (Credit Agricole), an insurance company (Gruporama) and an estate agent on the right hand side. Just after the estate agent, you find a (mainly) pedestrian street, to the right. This street quickly takes you to the main square, Place des Halles, a great place to sit out and enjoy a coffee or a beer surrounded by the superb architecture of the town.
- THE TOWNHALL, built in 1125, is the oldest in France; now a museum, it displays a remarkable collection of local prehistoric artifacts. Periods of war and prosperity have left their mark on the village making it a living museum of medieval civil architecture unique in France.
- THE MAIN SQUARE (Place des Halles): You will find some lovely cafés, being the main meeting point in Saint Antonin
- TOURIST OFFICE: In the main street, near Place de Halles.
- BAKERIES: There are two bakeries in St Antonin (both excellent).
- POST OFFICE: Situated by the Pharmacy, (3 minutes walk on our side of the river, past the bridge.) Open Monday-Friday 09h00-12h00 and 14h30-16h30, Saturday 09h00-12h00. Post leaves at 15h30
- CASH POINTS: by the bank, in the main road (Avenue Paul Benet) and by the post office (next to the pharmacy, down by the river).
- MARKET: Sundays, all year round, offering all sorts of fresh food and other goods. From 08h00 to 13h00. This is a great tourist attraction, so traffic is heavy.
- SECOND HAND/ANTIQUES SHOP: “HISTOIRES ET JARDINS”, 22 Bis Boulevard des Thermins, by the river, on our side, just past the bridge.
- CIGARETTES/TOBACCO: sold in the TABAC shop on Boulevard de Thermes – on the bend by the bridge
- CHURCHES: Église Saint-Antonin Catholic Church, 4 Rue du Pont de l'Aveyron (on Place de la Mairie). Classical concerts are often held here. Temple protestant de l'Eglise Réformée Evangélique located where the main road (Avenue Paul Benet) bends after having passed the main parking and the swimming pool/ tennis court area), it may not look quite like a church. The small grass area next to this Church is lovely for some quiet time.
- RESTAURANTS - We recommend you book a table to avoid disappointment. Restaurant service charge/ tips are included in the price by law so leaving a tip is not necessary unless you wish to add more. A selection of recommended restaurants are included in this file or on our website.
Our BEST meal ever … Fresh bread from the bakery, countryside sausage (saucisse seche) and foie gras from the butcher, a couple of French cheeses – Roquefort and camembert (add honey – “miel”), pears, butter, tomatoes, olives, endives (chicory) and biscuits from the supermarket or the Sunday market, local wine and water. All served around the kitchen table or in the garden. - SWIMMING
You have two options for summer swimming.
The communal outdoor heated swimming-pool, which is located just above the main car park (5 minutes walk from our house), or in the river, on either side.
Swimming in the river on our side: From the Protestant Church (Place de Carmes) (close to the parking/swimming pool), walk down (postsigned “La Plage”) along the river for a few minutes. The water is shallow in parts and you can paddle (walk) across the river to the small island (“The Beach”). There is also nice a bar/café/restaurant just on the riverbank here (5 minute walk from our house), and canoes for rent. - TENNIS: Tennis courts are located by the swimming pool
- CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND: There is a nice playground for children – walk down our road, walk past the bridge and the pharmacy/post office, walk another 100m-200m, and take the road to the right (opposite an open space on your left hand side). You will find the playground on your right hand side.
- CANOEING/CAYAKING: This is a big attraction, and there are many locations for rental in town, beside the river.
- WALKING: There are a number of beautiful walks around Saint Antonin and further information, if you cannot find a guide book in our house, can be obtained from the Tourist Office where there is a mass of information on walking and VTT circuits within the area.
A lovely scenic drive is to Brousses – Cross over the bridge from St Antonin and turn right, travelling past Carrefour. Take the first left (signposted to Penne/ Bruniquel). Pass the woodland restaurant (Manjocarn restaurant with tables outside under the trees), continue on to the most breath-taking views from the top of the climb. The road continues down into Brousses, where there is a superb restaurant, La Corniche with an outside terrace and stunning views (NB Payment by cash only). Please note that French driving laws differ from those in the UK and at times, in particular on smaller roads, priority is given to traffic entering from the right hand side. The road in the centre of St Antonin leading to Caylus (next to Gazpacho Bar) is a prime example and can easily be overlooked. Although you may consider you
