Laval (Mayenne - Pays de la Loire)
The town of Laval, is located in the West of France, in the department of La Mayenne.
Laval is a historic town which dates back to the 6th century as a trading post. It is set on the banks of the river Mayenne.
The old castle which was built in the 11th century to protect the city and dominate the river crossing was marked then as it is now, by the Old Bridge. The old part of the castle is today the 'art Naif' museum and the newer part is now used by the law court.
'La Grande Rue' which was the main street to allow people to go through the center, is just down from the castle. It descends to the Mayenne and the old bridge. At the foot of the castle is the old port of Beucheresse. The medieval town with its half-timbered houses, towers and ramparts is interesting to walk around and some of the shops in the Grande Rue have origins going back centuries.
A number of churches can be found around the town of which the Basilica Notre Dame d'Avesnieres is undoubtedly the most beautiful with it's magnificent steeple.
There is a market in the town centre every Tuesday and Saturday, held near the Palais de Justice.
