Home description

An old stone village house with a large terrace and views over orchards and vineyards towards the étang and the sea. Recently renovated with lots of living space and large bedrooms, in a village which has kept its typical character while being very close to the sandy beaches and seaside resorts.

The situation is ideal for a holiday combining some lazing on the beach, and visiting the Roussillon area, while living in a typical local village. Could suit 2 families.

The house is a traditional 3-storey building with thick stone walls. 

Ground Floor

• Entrance hall
• Garage with space for 2 cars. There is also plenty of parking space at the end of the street (50 metres away). The garage is of course ideal for parking motorbikes, bicycles, beach equipment etc. There is also a washing machine and a toilet. 

First Floor

This is tiled throughout in traditional style and the ceilings retain the old wood beams.

• Living room - part of the original stone wall has been exposed. At the front of the house are:
• Kitchen and dining area, which look out over the street. The kitchen is fully equipped was gas/electric cooker, electric oven, refridgerator, freezer, dishwasher, electric kettle, coffee machine, toaster and plenty of pots and pans. The whole of the back of the house is a vast living area with two French doors opening onto the large terrace (about 35 sq.metres, 400 sq. ft) which has a view over orchards and vineyards towards the étang and the sea.
• Terrace is equipped for barbecues and eating outdoors. On this floor there is also:
• Main bathroom with bath and shower facilities.
• Shower room with hand basin.
• Separate toilet.

For periods early or late in the season when the evenings may be chilly, the living room is equipped with a wood-burning stove. There is also an electric heater in the bathroom. An iron and ironing board and a hairdryer are provided.

Second Floor

• 4 bedrooms. The original floorboards have been varnished, the high ceilings retain the wood beams, and the old stone walls are whitewashed. There are 2 large bedrooms each with a double bed, and 2 smaller bedrooms with 2 single beds in each.

About the location

The Village "St Nazaire en Roussillon" is about 1 mile from the sea as the crow flies. Between it and the sea is an "étang" (salt water lake) which is why although being so close to bustling seaside resorts, St Nazaire has retained the character of a normal Roussillon village. St Nazaire is an active agricultural village, mainly for wine growing, (there is a "Cave Cooperative" where you can taste and purchase the local wine), but also for fruit (apricots and peaches) and vegetables. There is hardly any tourist development in the village. The house is situated very close to the centre, in one of the oldest streets. About 50m down the street is the Boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants. The Grocer, Post-office, Chemist, Café and Church are not much further. The back of the house looks out over orchards and vineyards towards the étang and the sea. 100m walk the other way down the road brings you into vineyards and 10 minutes walk takes you to the edge of the étang, which is a haven for wildlife. In the right season you will see the famous pink flamingos.

There are many other places to visit in the Roussillon area, all within easy reach. Perpignan, the capital of Roussillon is about 10 minutes drive. Many of the local villages have medieval churches (Elne). The Cathare castles (Queribus, Peyrepertuse) are about 30 minutes drive. Further afield the Spanish border is about 45 minutes away, so a day trip into Spain is very feasible. An hour and a half will take you higher than 2000m (7000ft) into the Pyrenees, Font Romeu  for example where the summits attain nearly 3000m (Canigou, Carlit) . The walled city of Carcassonne is also about 1 1/2 hours away.

How to get here

St Nazaire is about 15 minutes from the A9 motorway (exit Perpignan Nord). There are daily flights to Perpignan from Stansted and Paris.
