Eze (Alpes Maritimes)

Perched like an eagles nest on a craggy peak some 1400 feet above the sea, Eze has preserved its unique medieval appearance with tiny streets and ancient buildings.

From the castle ruins at the highest point in the village (now an exotic tropical garden) you can see over the whole of the French Riviera as far as st Tropez, and on a clear day you can also see Corsica.

The bay of Eze is protected by the the peninsula of St Jean Cap Ferrat prolonged by St Hospice point. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, The King of Belgium and the Sultan of Morocco had splendid villa’s here.

The exotic garden was opened in 1949 amongst the ruins of the ancient medieval fortress, destroyed by the French at the beginning of the 18th century. It houses more than 400 succulent plants including cactus, aloes, agaves and euphorbia.

Car free, this charming and picturesque village also has an 18th century church. Its bust of Christ is made from live wood that survived the terrible fires of the area in 1986.

There are several restaurants and craft shops in the village. As the village is set on a hill and there are steps on some of the streets it is unfortunately not really suitable for wheelchair access.
