Bourg Charente (Charente)
This little town is in the Charente department of Pitou Charentes in South West France.
Here you will find a bar/snack with post depot, and a small but useful grocery and general store, much used by visitors to the boat-halt on the river Charente and the nearby campsite.
There are often small fairs, boule matches, and social occasions in the town, and there is one of the best known starred restaurants in the region - Sunday lunchtime and popular evenings need booking as early as possible, and as the terrace and balcony overlook the river, it is well worth the trouble. Though not cheap by French standards, the quality is excellent.
Just across the bridge is a picturesque chateau from where the spirit destined for the manufacture of Grand Marnier originates. There are pleasant walks along the river banks in both directions, towards either Cognac or Jarnac.
A mile or two beyond Bourg-Charente is the excellent Cognac golf Club, with attached restaurant.
