Dunes (Tarn-et-Garonne)
The beautiful stone-built 13th century bastide village of Dunes is situated on a hill close to the point where the départements of Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and the Gers meet.
The ancient village of Dunes is set amongst the vineyards of the Côtes du Brulhois and the fertile fruit orchards of the Garonne valley. It overlooks the valley of the River Garonne to the east, and to the south-west it enjoys commanding views towards the rolling hills of the département of the Gers, with it’s many fortified farmsteads and hilltop villages.
Dunes, and Gascony in general, is steeped in a rich history dating back to the Visigoths and the Knights Templar, the Hundred years war, the wars of Religion and, more recently, the activities of the German troops during World War II.
The village has a typical Place at its heart with ancient arcades on four sides of the central square, at the centre of which is the impressive Mairie. In the 'Place des Martyrs' can be found the village bar tabac - Le Bistrot, the village supermarket and butcher - 8 a Huit, a gourmet restaurant - Les Templiers and a branch of the Credit Agricole bank which is open one morning a week (on Saturdays) - honest!!
