Lavardac (Lot-et-Garonne)
Lavardac is a a bastide built by the brother of Saint Louis, one of the most famous French kings around 1280.
Little remains of the old town except some streets cutting at right angles. It is nestled in a bend of the Baïse river which played a vital economic role until 1900 for the shipping of flour from the 200 plus mills along the Baïse and Gelise rivers. The river was also used for the transport of Armagnac and wines to Bordeaux and from there on to to the Antilles.
Lavardac was known for its cork factories and sawmills. The town has 2 restaurants, a pizzeria and a bar in addition to all normal amenities.
