Former province of Perigord, the Dordogne has a wealth of remarkable places of interest, especially prehistoric sites, and appeals as much to architecture fans and lovers of unspoiled landscapes as it does to sporty types. Divided into four geographical areas - Black Perigord, Green Perigord, White Perigord and Purple Perigord - the Dordogne has enough to keep all its visitors happy.
Nearby Bergerac, in the Purple Perigord, is a town famous for its vineyards. Highlights include the medieval old town, wine rooms and barge trips. Daily markets can be found in various neighbouring villages and Sainte Alvere hold their local market every Monday. The village of Sainte Alvere is famous for its succulent foie gras and pungent black truffles. It is only a short stroll from the house (Le Limouzinat) to the village which has all the necessary services, such as boulangeries, epicerie, restaurants, doctor, bank, etc.
The wide Vezere and Dordogne rivers flow well all year round and canoe hire is available every day in the holiday season. It is a privilege to relax and watch spectacular Chateaux pass by.
Many local activities including wine tastings and chateaux visits, canoeing down the Vezere and Dordogne Rivers, viewing oldest Prehistoric cave paintings in the world, gourmet dining, bastide towns, etc
