The Maison du Pain is estimated to be at least 150-years old and after a comprehensive refurbishment now consists of five bedrooms and three modern bathrooms. The well-appointed kitchen and dining area complement a large outside BBQ and dining terrace that is partially covered from sun and rain. It is here that the original bread oven is located - a weekly firing of which once provided the bread quotidian for the farm’s family and workers.
The modern kitchen with large breakfast bar / island provides a wonderful area for those who like to cook and incorporates a large double-oven range cooker with five ring ceramic hob. An integrated dishwasher makes for an easier life, as does the modern charcoal BBQ located on the adjacent private terrace that should encourage everyone to get involved in meal preparation!
The bedroom facilities range from a large en-suite with its own quiet ground level terrace, through a spacious timber-framed room with private balcony to a cosy loft room with exposed beams, so there is ample space for up to ten or more adults and children. The property also enjoys central heating for the comfort of low-season clients.
The three modern bathrooms provide either bath facilities (for a romantic soak) or invigorating power showers to follow your day’s activities, and should you be unlucky with the odd day of rain there is a flat screen TV together with a good selection of DVD’s. Wireless internet is available throughout the site. That said, for the puritans amongst you there are also lots of books and games to be enjoyed and there is a piano in the lounge area ready for a singalong if you have a musician within your party.
During your stay you will also enjoy exclusive use of the 12m x 6m heated pool, with roman steps at one end to facilitate easy assess. Pool depth varies from 1m to 1.5m and it is fully enclosed by a norm-compliant security fence with child-proof gated access for peace of mind. There is a pantiled abri (shelter) within this large area that is fitted out with a summer kitchen (with hot & cold running water) to allow for the preparation and cooking of meals using a top-of-the-range Weber gas BBQ with side burner. The large modern fridge can be used for food storage and the chilling of those refreshing drinks, whilst the kitchen is fully equipped with cooking utensils and unbreakable serving ware. This leisure area also sports a table tennis table and other games facilities and there are plenty of chairs and loungers for sun-worshipers alongside shady nooks for the more sensitive of skin. The hot shower, toilet and beautiful aspect may well result in most of your time being spent in this well-appointed area....
A couple of bikes are also available, subject to a polite request to the owners.
The nearby village of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac has an interesting history and via a short drive (or pleasant walk) can provide everything from your daily baguette to your weekly shop. Facilities include a popular boulangerie specialising in exquisite pastries, an excellent butcher and a small Proxi supermarket, together with a larger Carrefour supermarche complete with petrol station and car wash. Two popular hotels offer complete menus alongside three or four additional bar-restaurants all within walking distance. Several others provide a pleasant distraction at a very short remove and a busy Sunday market is held throughout the year. At the height of season this lively market is unmissable, providing a wide range of fresh food, local delicacies and interesting vendeurs, and in July and August this same market square hosts a Wednesday nuit marche where stallholders sell local speciality dishes and wine that can be consumed on the tables provided, whilst enjoying some free entertainment. To finish the season our annual fete is a spectacular affair, culminating in a ‘grand feu d’artifice’ (firework display), although for more simple pleasures Rouffignac provides some pleasant walks, a beautiful old church and some great viewing points as you wander around.
And to top it all, just five minutes away is our famous grotte (‘cave of a hundred mammoths’) that is part of one of the most extensive underground systems in the region. A subterranean train takes you over 2kms into these caves which are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site due to the many prehistoric paintings to be found there.
Further afield:
The nearby towns of Le Bugue, Montignac and regional capital Perigueux offer comprehensive shopping and tourist attractions, whilst world-famous Bergerac and the beautiful medieval town of Sarlat are accessible within an enjoyable hour’s drive. Whilst offering many spectacular attractions, the wonderful Dordogne valley can be easily matched by the prehistoric Vezere river valley that holds claim to 30,000 years of continuous human habitation (the longest anywhere in the world). The two rivers converge at nearby Limeuil - yet another lovely place to visit - and given the volume of visitors to the region even the local French (sometimes renowned for their laid-back attitude to commerce) have found many opportunities to respond with fine restaurants, markets, theme parks and activity pursuits. So whether your interests lie in natural or cultivated gardens, shopping, golf, river pursuits, ancient sites, churches, food (and drink) or even hot air ballooning, you are coming to the right place.

Our return to La Perode didn’t dissapoint! Some highlights were:
Canoeing down the river from St Leon sur Vezere; Quercyland for water slides and fun; Gourmande evening every Wednesday (arrive about 6.30pm to get a table & bring your own cutlery and glasses); Look out for local brocantes for some interesting finds…
Alec and Annie, we have had a wondeful stay, again, and hope to return in the future.Guest rating:
Thank you for making us feel so welcome during our stay at La Perode. We’ve loved the pool, especially on the hot, hot days, and enjoyed pottering about around the lanes picking plums and blackberries. Thank you for being so kind with Florence and Hannah, humouring their endless chatter and 20 questions! Both you and this holiday will stay in their memories. Days out we’ve particularly enjoyed: Rouffignac caves, Maison Forte de Reignac, Chateau de Commarque and a beautiful canoe trip from Thonac to St Leon sur Vezere. We’ve also enjoyed our morning excursions to collect still-warm bread and croissants from the (local) campsite. Good luck with the Grand Wall of La Perode!
If the weather had been cooler we would have done more walks in the Balades et Randonnées folder. We did walks from Fanlac & Plazac and both villages have pleasant, friendly restaurants to recover. In Rouffignac the Sunday market and the ‘Gormande Nocturne’ were good fun. The boucherie and epicerie supply good meat and groceries – the butcher is very jolly in his red apron and beret! We couldn’t have asked for more from Annie, Alec and La Perode – a wonderful setting for a family holiday. Thank you.

A great two weeks at La Perode. It was so hot (hitting 46DegC on one day) that we spent most of the time at the pool. However, a couple of places which are good to visit:
Montignac – a pretty town with lots of restaurants & a lovely ice cream shop.
Le Bos – a campsite near Le Bugue which has a big lake with ‘Total Wipe Out’ style inflatables. Also swimming pools and slides. Good for kids but lake & slides open at 1.00 and 2.00pm respectively. About €10pp + little kids are free.
Alec & Annie were great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Many thanks for looking after us!Guest rating:
We’ve had a great two weeks. Beautiful area to explore, enjoyed the local caves and Perigueux, a lovely city. Alec & Annie were great hosts. The pool area is amazing and spent most of our time up there relaxing.

Another fabulous time at La Perode – this time for two weeks. First week with family, second week with friends (& Sally the dog). Spent a lot of time in the pool due to the heat wave. Sunday market in the village was great. Ate three meals at the Bleu Soliel campsite – very nice. Thank you again Alec and Annie for your hospitality and good luck with the ongoing restoration.
Dawn & BrianThank you Alec and Annie for letting us share your beautiful home. What an amazing place. For a naturalist like me La Perode is paradise. It has been a very special week and being able to relax and get away from it all, doing the things I love has been great therapy for me, helping me get over the loss of my Andy. He would have loved it here too. Best wishes. Jane Ashall

On behalf of the Hughes family (8 adults and two babies) we would like to give our sincere thanks to Alec & Annie for sharing their home with us, in the most idyllic setting here in La Perode. Their hospitality is marvellous, on hand to sort out any problems & give out advice and general information regarding the area. The pool area ‘took a bashing’ as we were blessed with the weather. We made full use of the facilities & nice to go home ready to face the UK weather, if that’s possible. We wish them luck for their home and we will pass on info’ to friends and family.

A lovely holiday for all the family. La Perode suited our needs perfectly. We especially enjoyed being able to base ourselves in the pool area for part of the day. I cannot think of anything that we needed that was not supplied. Many thanks to Alec and Annie.
It was epic and thanks so much – Joseph (9)
I loved the games and the swimming pool – Jacob (6)Guest rating:
Had a lovely holiday. Alec & Annie made us very welcome. Managed to get out and about despite the temp. reaching near 40ᵅC! (most days). Here are a few favourites – Montignac, Sarlat (evening), Domme, La Roche Gageac, Bergerac, St Leon sur vezere, Chateau de Losse. Big Bird highwire for the adventurous youngsters (Sophie aged 11 and Evelyn, 9). Reserve zoologique de Calviac for the smallest guest (George, aged 3) was a big hit! Canoeing on the river Vezere was more sheltered in the heat of the day. Rouffignac Sunday market – very good – also enjoyed the gourmet evening on Wednesdays. Every day a pool day. Thank you so much Annie & Alec.

Lovely location, very quiet with some walks straight from accommodation. Very comfortable well equipped villa with good sleeping facilities. Very friendly and helpful owners, who made us feel very welcome. Great swimming pool complex with lovely eating area for lunch and evenings. Lovely local village within walking distance, convenient supermarket and boulangerie.
We arrived on Bastille day and went to Les Eyzies for the fireworks. Also used Les E. as start for a couple of canoing trips down the river. Some advice for any golfers: played 5 times during our stay and would rate the courses we played as follows –
La Lolivarie G.C is about 45 minutes due south. Long course in good condition. Book online for best deals.
Cahreau les Merles is also about 45 minutes and 15 minutes from Bergerac. Truly awful 9 hole course!
Bluegreen la Marterie is 20 minutes away. Good course but plagued by swarms of flies when we played.
Golf Publique de Perigueux is an attractive course half an hour away and in reasonable condition. Greens good, fairways rather barren.Guest rating:
Thank you for a wonderful week. The gite is fabulous and we really enjoyed the
pool and all it’s facilities. Very convenient to order daily bread at the local
campsite and had two lovely (evening) meals there also.Guest rating:
Thank you for letting us stay in your super house. We had a wonderful time. We had fun exploring the local area / various markets / neolithic caves and (some of us) braved a day kayaking. Your pool and BBQ are brilliant! You have been most gracious and courteous hosts. We will be back!
La Perode is lovely, with plenty of room to have your own space as couples if you want to, and all the facilities you need for hot days up at the pool. There’s easy access to everyday shops, and more than enough to see and do within an hour’s drive. Alec and Annie are gracious and helpful yet unobtrusive hosts, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay. 5* rating.

Guest rating:
Thank you for an amazing property and pool allowing us to unwind and relax with our families. Every day was a pool day – wonderful area by the pool allowing many hours of fun. Lovely owners, very knowledgeable of the area. We enjoyed the Sunday market, a must for food and knick-knacks – although we spent €36 on tapenade!!! The night market on Wednesday is mainly food but a wonderful idea if you want to eat out and soak up the atmosphere. It’s a lovely walk to the town to stock up on bread, pastry and pies from Blondy’s (boulangerie) and the butchers is also fab!! Many thanks.

Merci pour votre accueil. Vous avez une très jolie maison. Tout le monde a apprécie la piscine, l’extérieur et le calme. En espérant être les premiers d’une longue liste de locataires Français !!! Une formidable maison pour une très bonne semaine en famille. Merci.

“Fantastic, adventure, beautiful, fun, friendly & fabulous!” Just a few words our children used to describe our two week holiday! We are two families with six children aged 12, 10, 9 & 7 years old. The pool featured a lot during their holiday and the adults were able to do lots of relaxing at the poolside. La Perode has been a wonderful place to relax and explore the locality of Rouffignac and beyond. We had a few days out, including a trip to the ‘grottes’ (caves). We actually had two visits as it seems to be very popular so we had to book tickets in advance. The snail farm was also a highlight where all the children enjoyed eating them! And finding out about how they are farmed. The gourmand market was great but ensure that you get there early (6.30 or before) to ensure you get a table. On the only overcast day we decided to take a canoe trip – it was beautiful, a little hard work, but definitely a good way to see the scenery. Alec & Annie have been wonderful hosts and it has been a pleasure to stay at their beautiful house. We hope to return in the future…. Thanks from us all.

We had very varied weather for two weeks. Pleasantly warm, cool, incredibly hot (38 C at hottest) and rain on our last day. But the children swam in the lovely pool every day as the cover maintains warm water. We have enjoyed ourselves going to the cave (with train) in Rouffignac to see the mammoths, horses, etc, painted on the walls – but all in French. We also went to the caves in Grand Roc which was excellent, with a lovely guide who answered the children’s questions in English. We went to the museum in Les Eyzies, which was good, and for the children to the per-histo park which they enjoyed. We really enjoyed our boat trip on the Dordogne at La Roche Gageac which was about 50 minutes and the scenery is lovely. Castelnaud was a great success – very professional but fun. We were a very mixed age group but one thing we all agreed upon was the super pool area and the facilities to eat outside at various spots. We also enjoyed the walks available nearby the gite. We would all like to thank our hospitable and helpful hosts Alec & AnnieGuest rating:
A fabulous place to stay – couldn’t have asked for more. Everything we needed and much, much more. Alec & Annie have been superb hosts, welcoming and helpful. Pity we were only here for a week as so much to explore. Suggest kayaking - a great activity for all the family. Thanks so much for a great stay. Au revoir.

We were fortunate enough to spend a whole month at the delightful 'La Perode' and it is difficult knowing where to start. Firstly, Alec & Annie were the perfect hosts - always there when needed and able to give wonderful advice on where to eat or take a boat trip - even down to providing the right implements to retrieve a lost ring from a plughole. The countryside must be amongst the very best in the world! The route from Plazac to Fanlac (one restaurant only but worth a visit), Rocamadour, Sarlat (walk in the back streets), Gouffre de Padirac (longish trip beyond Sarlat); local caves here are good and go on the river Dordogne. Eat at St Leon sur Vezere and walk around the village. Try Castelnaud - again views are wonderful and chateau of great interest. Market day in Sarlat is Wednesday - we ate at 'Le Tourny' in middle of town. Rouffignac is great - has all you need. The swimming pool area is wonderful and we enjoyed many memorable BBQ's. This was a wonderful holiday offering everything from great walks to spectacular chateaux /cycling / restaurants and all in a laid back French way! Many thanks for a marvellous holiday.Guest rating:
We had a great week here with three generations of our family. The weather has been very mixed with a fantastic storm one night and some very hot days. Highlights of our week were a Thursday evening trip to Chateau du Marqueyssac for the candlelight evening with music. The saxophonists, jazz singer, strings and piano player are all excellent and contribute to a magical evening. Can also recommend the ice creams there. Boat trip on a gabarre from Baynac - fun and informative. Running to the village for pain-au-raisin (young members of the group) of approx. 10 minutes. There is so much to do in the area we only just touched upon it. The rest of the time we spent enjoying this wonderfully peaceful haven. Thank you for a wonderful week.Guest rating:
Only had one week here .. definitely not enough!! We were just getting relaxed and in tune with the local rythme when it was time to go. We can only echo the comments of other guests - Alec & Annie were very welcoming and helped us out with some early snags (lost luggage and hire car problems). Nothing was too much trouble yet they knew when to offer advice and when to let us get on with things ourselves. The house itself is fantastic; it has everything you could need and more. The pool area was a huge hit with the big kids and not so big kids alike, particularly when the thermometer was touching 40DegC. It was only possible to scratch the surface regarding local attractions but Rouffignac caves are worth a visit, canoeing at Les Eyzies - fantastic experience but try to pick a cool day - wine tasting and a balloon flight, although didn't quite manange the latter as the weather was too windy. We will definitely came again - for the house, the pool, the area and the hospitality of Alec & Annie.Guest rating:
What can we say about your lovely cottage - it is fantastic, everything you need plus more. The pool was fantastic especially as the weather was so hot during our stay (40DegC most days). We spent most of our time there using all the facilities. As for the pair of you, from booking until arrival you kept us informed and up to date. While here you helped with any information we needed and we loved seeing your new project. We wish you all the best in the future and would love to see you again in the coming years. Thanks for making and allowing us to have a great holiday.Guest rating:
