Our chalet is five minutes from the resort of La Clusaz and ten minutes from the resort of Le Grand Bornand. It is one of 14 traditional chalets in private landscaped grounds, with a swimming pool, play areas for small children and parking - all for the exclusive use of residents and their guests. We are surrounded by hills, valleys and mountains that offer winter and summer activities - or just peace, but we are also 15 minutes from our local market town of Thones (the capital of Reblochon cheese), and 30 minutes from the lake and city of Annecy.
Accommodation at Chalet le Meleze comprises:
- A sitting-cum-dining room, with an open fire and a pretty view across to Mont Lachat.
- Two double bedrooms (one with a king sized bed that can also convert to two singles, one with a standard sized double bed). The larger bedroom has an en-suite bathroom; the smaller double room has an en-suite shower room. There is a separate loo.
- A mezzanine bedroom above the sitting room, accessed by a narrow spiral staircase, with two single beds. This room is only for children of six years old and over as it has an internal balcony.
- The kitchen is small but ergonomic and includes a washing machine and dishwasher, as well as plenty of cooking equipment including fondue and raclette sets .
- An entrance with a separate space for skis in winter or walking/sporting clothing in summer.
Outside
We have a terrace and a small garden with table and chairs in summer.
The Aravis region, which includes the two mountain resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand, is still very much an unspoiled French farming area, home to Reblochon cheese, although both resorts have been developed over the years to offer everything most skiers or hikers could want in the winter and summer seasons.
Our little village of St Jean de Sixt is within 5 minutes' drive of both La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand and has all essential shops and a mini supermarket. Our local market town, Thones, is typically Haute-Savoyard and has a Saturday morning market all year round, along with numerous 'fetes' and two good museums: one on local life and one on the famous WWII resistance battle on the nearby Plateau de Glieres, which can also be visited in summer.
Annecy, "the Venice of the north", is about 25 minutes drive. The city itself is beautiful and the small towns along the shore of Lac d'Annecy offer sailing and swimming, as well as delicious ice creams! A little further afield, for half day or full day outings, are Aix les Bains/Lac du Bourget, Chamonix, Megeve, Lac Leman and Yvoire. All around us, there are plenty of restaurants, fresh food markets (mostly in summer), small shops and, on the outskirts of Annecy, two hypermarches.
In winter, both La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand offer a wide range of pistes for skiers and boarders of all levels; La Clusaz also has a cross-country ski-ing area. There are also skating rinks and, in Thones, there is go-karting on ice - enormous fun between a day's ski-ing and a dish of the local Tartiflette!
In summer there is wonderful hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, canyoning, golf, horse riding, bird watching, and more - and, as above, sailing and swimming on Lac d'Annecy or Lac du Bourget.

As a family of four (including a sixteen and fourteen year old) we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Chalet le Meleze, which was clean, well equipped, in a stunning location, and the pool was great too! There are plenty of things to do in the area, as well as further afield and we particularly enjoyed walking down into the village every morning for our baguettes/provisions. Good directions to the Chalet were provided by the owner, and details of activities, but there are Tourist Offices in almost every small town in the area if you need extra advice. We stayed in the summertime, but I would imagine that it would be a good location for skiing, as there was a bus stop right outside grounds. We will definitely return here should we wish to visit the area again.Guest rating:
We have had a fantastic holiday here. The chalet was clean and had everything we needed. The pool and playground were a great bonus for the kids. Lots of lovely activities to do nearby. Very efficient booking process. We would love to come back another time. Highly recommended.Guest rating:
A lovely location the chalet is well equipped clean very comfortable and has great views. The shared pool was a welcome relaxation after the walks-- and we had it to ourselves. Located perfectly for exploring the region including the Aravis Alps, tremendous walking area and plenty of good restaurants close by. Definitely, recommend and hope to come back.
Guest rating:
This was our second stay here. The Chalet is in a super location a very short drive from La Clusaz and a short walk from the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. The pool makes it a perfect spot for just relaxing around the pool, and its location is great as a base for exploring the area. I was amazed at how much we found to do not far from the chalet and if you are happy to drive, the area around here is stunning and bursting with places to visit. We spent days out at Annecy swimming in the lake and walking in Chamonix. Chantal was very great. The booking was simple and straight forward. She knows the area very well, we found this very helpful so we got the most out of our stay. The Chalet is lovely and cozy. It is very homely and has everything we needed and wanted. It is very clean and well maintained without being sparse as some rental properties feel. The beds are comfortable and we are booked to stay this Christmas and New year to ski. We can't wait to get back.
