A delightful, detached stone watermill with heated pool, situated on its own with no owners on site, and within walking distance of a traditional French village, complete with boulangerie and bar/restaurant. Le moulin's facilities are for the sole use of our guests; they are not shared, like many other houses. We have excellent managers living nearby who speak both English and French and are on hand should you need anything.
Set in two acres of land, Le Moulin de Beaumont is a typical old stone Charentaise mill house which has been fully renovated to provide a light, airy place to stay with all modern facilities you'd expect.
The large spacious open plan kitchen is the heart of the house. A large kitchen table seats 8 comfortably, providing plenty of room to eat indoors if you wish. French doors lead from the kitchen to the patio with views of the heated, salt water pool, stream, garden, in which many flowers, plants, herbs, fig and persimmon trees grow. Please feel free to pick and use the herbs for your culinary dishes, during your stay.
From the terrace, a path leads to the secluded walled and terraced, private heated salt water pool (10m x 5m). A great sun trap. The extensive terrace has ambient lighting so you can swim all night or just enjoy balmy evenings by the pool. In order to comply with French safety recommendations, the pool is also fenced and gated.
The sitting room benefits from a wood burning stove - perfect for staying in the cooler winter months. A TV provides both French and UK TV channels. French doors lead from the sitting room to a loggia, providing some respite from the midday sun and the perfect spot for a morning coffee, listening to and watching the wildlife.
In addition to the three bedrooms, there is a further sitting room with French 'day bed' for those afternoon snoozes or just to relax with a good book. Its also proved to be the perfect area for teenagers to relax in and watch a film as there is a DVD player here and second TV.
Through the garden runs the River Benigousse, but it's more of a stream really. With a woodland backdrop, this stream forms a wonderful natural border along one whole side of the garden and has proved to be a wildlife haven, often home to families of ducks, moorhens, and coots. Kingfishers are also regular visitors, as well as a heron who is known to swop down and take crayfish from the stream. If you're up early enough you may well see the deer who come to drink from the stream too. An old millstream still runs under the garage, through the garden and can be crossed by a charming wooden bridge to an island, where it meets the main river Benigousse. As well as proving to be a wildlife haven, the stream provides hours of fun 'pond dipping'. All we ask is that anything caught is returned.
The moulin's interesting garden is part of the charm of the property, being large enough to play ball games, endlessly run around or simply find a quiet, sheltered spot to tuck yourself away with a good book and just your thoughts. With the aim of helping you make the most of your holiday, pool and garden furniture, (as well as garden games, such as boules and badminton), are all provided, plus of course, the all essential barbecue and tools. Bikes are also available, making the trip to the boulangerie, a relaxing 5-minute cycle ride away.
With no direct neighbours, the peaceful setting of the moulin surrounded by open countryside really is the perfect place to spend a relaxing holiday but close enough to the coast and historic towns if you can tear yourself away to venture out and explore all the Charente Maritime has to offer.

Le Moulin de Beaumont is situated in a quiet rural location, surrounded by farmland and within walking distance of the village of Cravans, with its boulangerie and restaurant. Just 3kms from the town of Gemozac, which has all the usual facilities you'd expect in a town, along with a Friday market and large Super U supermarket on the outskirts of Gemozac towards Cravans, means you don't have to travel far for your daily needs.
For beach and coastal lovers, the area is perfect. There are several beaches just a 20 minutes drive from the Moulin, the nearest being the coves at Meschers and then further along the coast between Meschers and Royan, there are wonderful huge sweeping sandy beaches, such as St George de Didonne with lots of space, water sports, safety patrols, along with all the usual seaside expectations and an adventure park with zip wires. North of Royan is the Grande Cote - several miles of sandy beaches with some local beach patrols and a little further is the Cote Sauvage, with good sandy beaches but where the rollers come in off the Atlantic and therefore, perfect for surfers.
The islands of Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron, famous for their Oyster beds and wildlife are also great for cycling and watersports with many picturesque whitewashed cottages to see along the way.
La Palmyre Zoo, just beyond Royan, is a must-see for adults and children alike. With a world-renowned breeding programme, there are always lots of young animals to see and pet.
The pretty ports along the Gironde Estuary of Mortagne, Meschers, and Talmont are just 15 minutes away by car and well worth a visit especially in the evening light for a leisurely stroll followed by a meal in one of the restaurants.
La Rochelle is well worth a day out, where you can enjoy its famous harbour, amble along the pedestrianised streets and take in the impressive, colourful aquarium on the quay.
The River Charente flows through the nearby historic Roman towns of Saintes and Cognac. Saintes offers a range of cultural activities, including river trips, historic buildings and Roman ruins, with restaurants, shopping and Wednesday and Saturday morning food markets too. The brandy houses of Hennessey, Remy Martin and Martell are based at Cognac and provide guided tours of their distilleries, offering a sample of the amber liquid to taste or simply take away. For music lovers, during the month of July, you can enjoy the renowned the Cognac Blues Passions Festival.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bordeaux is the gateway to the vineyards with its wine producing areas of Blaye, St. Emillion and Medoc offering the opportunity of degustation with guided tours given at many of the local chateaux. There are many vineyards in the Charente Maritime area and local to Le Moulin de Beaumont that offer tours as well. Further information can be found in our information folder.
Sleeping Beauty's Castle, the La Roche Courbon Chateau is one of the many Chateaux in the area not to be missed, complete with stone age cave dwellings to explore in the grounds.
Charente Maritime Cycle Routes - with over 2500 km of cycle routes in the Charente-Maritime, many quiet lanes to cycle in and around from the Moulin and leading to local vineyards for wine tasting.
Futuroscope at Poitiers is a colorful state-of-the-art park with a 3D cinema and latest in visual technology. Great for an out of season visit, or in case of inclement weather.
The area also boasts many excellent restaurants where you can enjoy the fresh produce from the sea, rivers and rich farmland of the Charente Maritime. Restaurants we have tried or which have been recommended are listed at the Moulin, along with phone numbers and reviews.
