Just a short drive from the house, Sarlat-la-Caneda is the most famous town in the region and one of the most visited in France. Often called just Sarlat, the town is actually twinned with its less famous neighbour and is more correctly called Sarlat-la-Caneda. Destined to be besieged by tourists at almost all times of the year Sarlat is a beautiful, well restored town a few kilometres north of the River Dordogne. The old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit, especially during the spring and autumn, or early in the morning. The town centre has narrow streets between the old stone buildings and is bustling with shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a market on Wednesday and Saturday morning in the Place de la Libertie where you can buy all the regional products, meats and vegetables, cheese even truffles (Nov-March).
St Julien de Lampon. The property itself is a 5 minute walk from the centre of St Julien de Lampon. Here you will find everything you require including bakery, butcher, grocery, bar with tobacconist, restaurants, doctor, pharmacie, post office and the bank with ATM. There is also a weekly market every Thursday. The village is set on the south bank of the Dordogne river, where there is a river beach and shaded picnic area. This is the perfect place to hire a canoe and mosy down the river or if you are feeling a little more energenic, cross the famous viaduc bridge and you can access the Sarlat-Souillac cycle track (see below).
La Roque-Gageac is classed as one of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages des France' and should not be missed. La Roque has a most dramatic setting, situated right beside the river, with many of its houses built directly into the face of the huge cliff that overhangs the village. Above this there are steep steps to incredible troglodyte caves with great views as well as a small botanical garden. Don't forget to take a boat trip on a gabare (a glass-bottomed boat) while you are there.
Rocamadour and Forest of Monkeys
Rocamadour is actually in the next department of Lot but only 30 minutes drive. It is a spectacular medieval village built into the cliff face and also has La Foret des Singes -10 hectares of land set aside as a park for more than 100 monkeys to live in relative freedom.
The Gouffre at Padirac
Also, just in the department of Lot, you have the famous cave Le Gouffre at Padirac, a natural 75 metre chasm below which runs an underground river. Your visit will last about 1½ hours with a total tour of 2,000 metres, including a boat trip through the underground cave.
Quercyland Water Park & Lakes
At Souillac (10-15 minutes drive), you will find Quercyland - an aquatic and leisure park with 6 swimming pools, water slides, a six track water shoot, trampolines, bouncy castles, sand pits and much more.
Alternatively, the Plan d'eau at Grolejac is lovely lake where you can swim and hire pedlos, etc. It is a 10 minute drive or you can cycle from the village using the greenway (see Cycling). You also have the Etang de Tamniès just north-west of Sarlat where there inflatable slides and adventure course for the children.
Cycling
If you are into cycling, this is the ideal location for you. The Sarlat-Souillac greenway can be accessed very easily from the village and provides 35km of traffic-free cycling. There has also been a recent extension that turns off the main route and continues to Gourdon, passing the scenic lake at Grolejac.
Canoeing
In an area so blessed with beautiful rivers and countryside, there is nothing more relaxing than gliding down the river in a canoe, taking in the views of villages and chateaux. Canoeing along the Dordogne is safe for children as the river is very shallow and slow flowing. You can access the river directly from the village where there is a company based who will hire canoes and arrange pick-ups.
Golf
There are 8 golf courses in the area including Souillac Country Club (Souillac), Domaine de Rochebois (Vitrac), Golf de Lolivarie (Saint-Germain-de-Belvès), Golf de la Forge (Siorac en Perigord).
For details of all the 8 courses and the Free Dordogne Golf Pass entitling you to 20% on your 2nd course played.
Forest Adventure Parks (climbing)
Within 10 minutes drive of the house, there are two children's adventure parks; Monkey Forest and the La Forêt des Ecureuils Adventure park. Both have tree top climbing activities and various rope swings that will keep the children entertained.
Aquarium and Mini-golf, Le Bugue
At Le Bugue, the opposite side of Sarlat, you have the excellent Aquarium du Perigord Noir with 66 pools of different fish, reptiles and alligators. On site, you also have an mini golf for all the family which is themed in a jungle setting.

How to get to Le Colombier
By Road
Considering the Dordogne is two thirds of the way down France, it is actually very cheap to reach by road due to the 280km stretch of A20 Autoroute which is toll free. To plan a route across France, visit www.autoroutes.fr
Various ferry routes can be taken from the UK including Dover-Calais, Poole-Cherbourg, Portsmouth-Caen, Newhaven-Dieppe or the more rapid Eurotunnel from Folkstone to Calais.
We usually take a Newhaven-Dieppe crossing, travelling through Rouen, Évreux, Châtres on good Route Nationals (RN's), joining the A10 Autoroute just above Orléans. From here, we proceed down the A71 and then the free A20, exiting at Souillac (which is just 15km from the house). This only has an approximate peage cost of 15 Euros (one-way). Whichever way you come, you will be looking at 7-8 hours of driving in France. The property is very easy to find and full instructions from Souillac or your destination airport will be given.
By Air
The nearest airports to the house are Bergerac (1 hour) and Brive-Souillac (30 mins) which opened June 2010 but still has limited flights. Limoges and Toulouse (both about 2 hours) are also convenient as they both offer easy/fast routes along the A20 auroroute (Toulouse from the south and Limoges from the north). Other close airports are Rodez and Bordeaux.
By Rail
Souillac station is short taxi ride away for those guests wanting to arrive by train. Souillac is on the main line with direct trains to Paris in the north. These is also a bus service from Sarlat to Souillac which passes the village on the main road.
Access options
Public transport available, Taxi from train station

We spent two weeks here for a family birthday get together. The accommodation and gardens were spacious for our large extended family and catered for all ages. We appreciated the use of high chairs and travel cot so we didn’t have to travel with these. The house is very well equipped and our Granddaughters enjoyed the extensive range of DVDs for a late afternoon chill time after a day by the pool or sightseeing. We ate outside on the covered terrace everyday and even enjoyed several bbq’s. The garden is fabulous and secluded, as is the pool. The area is well placed to visit places such as Sarlat, Beynac and Castlenaud. We biked on the local bike paths and went canoeing from the village down the Dordogne. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. We walked every morning down the road to the local bakery for croissants for breakfast and enjoyed visiting local markets. The owner Steve, was very helpful and kept in touch to check our stay was going well. We would fully recommend and hope to visit again in the future.Guest rating:
The villa is set in lovely grounds with a very nice pool area. The house itself is light and bright with a well equipped kitchen. The terrace area for eating is lovely and we had very many bbqs. The village is only a short easy walk away and has a very good bakers and butchers. The drive to local attractions is straightforward. The pool furniture would benefit from cushions and having flown it would have been nice to have more than 2 hand towels for all 5 guests. The option of a welcome pack would also have been nice. These small points aside, the stay was lovely and we would definitely stay againGuest rating:
We came across this beautiful house after having had unsuccessful attempts and bad experiences with other holiday firms like Vebo. We liked the fact that you can speak to the owner directly. This Villa is beautiful, sitting in a small village 10 mins walk from The Dordogne river . It is well equipped and spacious and airy inside . With our large family of 9 we found the outdoor space to be perfect and we stayed for 3 weeks. As it was very hot there were always places to escape from the sun. The wrap around patio area was perfect for sitting outside on balmy nights. The showers were perfect and the water was hot at all times. The bathrooms are large and of good quality . St julienne de lampon has a bar, butchers, bakers and grocery store with A large supermarket 10 minutes drive away. The pool was spotless with loungers surrounding it. A few pool cushions would have been more comfortable for lounging on but we know these can get spoilt with sun creams etc. The house has a utility room for washing outside airer. Remember to take extra clothes pegs,T towels and all your own towels. There is no welcome pack on arrival . Toilet paper was provided. We would definitely stay here again. Thank youGuest rating:
We stayed here in June and would definitely go back. The house is lovely. Great sized rooms and is well equipped. The highlight however is the established wrap around garden and gorgeous pool. It is a peaceful area but less than 10 min walk to the village to get your morning croissants or have a beer at the bar! We stayed as two families, each with young children and the layout was perfect as each family could have their own separate area almost as double and twin upstairs and down.Guest rating:
Celebrated a big birthday here in late May with all my family. The house was perfect for our multi generation group and is very well appointed. We loved the pool and garden especially as it is so private. It is a beautiful area which we enjoyed exploring. Took a canoe trip, visited medieval chateaux and when got too hot by pool cooled off in the river. The bikes were put to good use collecting breakfast from the Boulangerie. Steve the owner couldn’t have been more helpful. We would love to return.Guest rating:
Guest rating:
We had a fantastic time, the house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The pool was a highlight and everyone loved it. The village is the perfect setting and a great base to go out exploring other areas. We would definitely return.
Guest rating:
A great property in a good location for exploring the areas of the Dordogne and Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park.
The house was spacious and well laid out with the added bonus of a swimming pool and attractive gardens.
we had a great week here and would recommend to friends and family.Guest rating:
We found this to be a lovely house to stay in and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. The grounds were really well laid out. The house is spacious and well equipped with everything you need and has a good size pool. The TV has English channels - BBC1 etc.
The house is in a quiet location and there were other houses nearby, and the village was only a very short walk away. Most of the shops you need were in the village. There was a bakery, minimart shop, pharmacy, post office, pub etc. If you like canoeing - you can book to go canoeing about a mile away. There are also restaurants nearby.
We spent a lot of time visiting the medieval towns, caves and tourist attractions which were within easy driving distance and found it to be a really interesting area.
The directions to the house that the owner supplied were good and we had no problems contacting the owner when we needed to.
I would really recommend this housed to anyone thinking of staying in the area.Guest rating:
We had a lovely stay at Le Colombier. The house is very comfortable and in a great location within 5 mins walk of the village and easy driving distance to lots of interesting places in the Dordogne and Lot areas.
The garden and pool area is fantastic and the pool was a good temperature.
We would definitely recommend staying at Le Colombier and hope to return in the future.
Guest rating:
We loved the property and extensive grounds - very spacious, peaceful and private with a fantastic pool . We particularly liked the wrap around shaded veranda which was spot on for outdoor dining, and sitting out in the evening. The location and village amenities were great too inc a variety of shops and canoe hire nearby. Fantastic bar / bistro in the village centre and traditional family run restaurant 15 mins walk. Locals were very friendly and patient as we attempted to speak our limited French! I would absolutely recommend this property for a fantastic family holiday.
Guest rating:
We loved everything about Le Colombier: it's a very spacious, comfortable, well-equipped house, with a great heated pool, a big veranda and lovely large secluded gardens. The location is very quiet, within easy walking distance of the village, and at the heart of the best of the Dordogne and neighbouring Lot regions. We appreciated the owners' willingness to answer all our questions - even before we booked! Over the years, we've rented numerous gites in France and certainly rate Le Colombier among the best.
Guest rating:
We were delighted to revisit the Dordogne area again and had a wonderful holiday. The property was beautifully maintained, both inside and out, with a lovely spacious garden and excellent heated pool. The facilities inside provided everything we needed and was to a high standard. We had good contact with the owner who answered any queries we had immediately and concisely. The property is set in an ideal position in which to visit the surrounding areas and there was plenty for us to see. We would definitely recommend this property and would like to return again in the future.

We are just back from a week's stay at Le Colombier. Although it was the first week in May, the weather was good and we saw temperatures of 18 to 21 deg C. We were able to eat outside which was an added bonus.
The property was totally as described, very spacious and with all the facilities we could need including a great pool.
The village center is just walking distance and has a few shops and bakery for morning croissants.. The main towns of Sarlat (in one direction) and Souillac (in the other direction) are within easy reach by car and we found a number of tourist attractions in the local vicinity. There are lots of eating choices in Sarlat and set course menus at very reasonable prices.
The best supermarket is the Leclerc in the Sarlat direction which is just on the outskirts of the town. You cannot miss it and you can get your weekly shop in here.
Having access to the owners bicycles was a nice touch as well as I really didn't want to take ours on the back of the car all the way down France.
All in all, a great holiday and we would return and recommend this property to others.
Guest rating:
We stayed at Le Colombier as 2 families, consisting of 5 adults and 3 children for a period of 2 weeks. We felt that the property had enough room for us to stay without feeling as if we were living on top of each other. Very comfortable. The outdoor space was amazing, much larger than the pictures indicate. We ate "al fresco" for the whole holiday. Loved the swimming pool, the kids practically lived in it. The position couldn't have been better, it was so easy to drive to fantastic places such as Sarlat (amazing Saturday Market), Beynac, Rocamadour, Martel (fantastic steam train) and lots more. Saint Julien De Lampon was a pretty small village but had all of the local amenities required and within easy walking distance from the property. Would highly recommend.
Guest rating:
We enjoyed a wonderful two weeks at this property. The house delivered everything that was described on the website and more!
The pool was wonderful, the enclosed large garden area was great for the children to run around in. The terrace had plenty of welcome shade and two eating areas.
The lounge was comfortable and the house had great kitchen and dining facilities. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable.
St Julien de Lampon was in close walking distance (5mins) and had everything needed for day to day living.
We will return in the future and would highly recommend!
Guest rating:
The house is very clean, spacious and modern with good privacy and plenty of outdoor space for the children to run around safely.
The kitchen is well equipped and all appliances work well.
The swimming pool is a good size and we made very good use of it as the weather was quite hot. It was also a very nice touch for the owner to leave bikes for guest use. They are certainly good enough to cycle down to the river (5 mins away - canoe hire available) or a bit further afield, but do remember to bring your own helmets.
The house is also well located with the main tourist attractions all within an easy drive, the Dordogne itself is very pretty - an ideal location in which to relax. We recommend Jardins de Marqueyssac although I still haven't forgiven my son for making me do the via ferrata!
Guest rating:
We had a fantastic holiday at Le Colombier and really didn't want to come home ! The house is spacious and well equipped, having everything we needed for a really comfortable and relaxing stay (its amazing how many properties for 8-10 people only have saucepans large enough for 2-4 people, making cooking for a big family very difficult !!).
The pool is wonderful (good size and temperature) and we used it every day. The garden is lovely, large yet private.
The house is in a great location, 5 min walk into St Julien for a relaxing drink, and also only a slow 15 min walk down to the Dordogne, which we did on a number of occasions when the children wanted to play in the river rather than the pool.
We had a couple of days canoeing on the river, and also visited Domme, Sarlat, Le Roque Gageac and Chateau de Castelnaud - all great days out, with some amazing scenery, and within easy driving distance of the house.
Le Colombier is a lovely house in a great location and we had a wonderful, relaxing holiday - thank you.
Guest rating:
Wonderful house has everything you wish for a holiday. Relaxing and located in a village with all amenities.
Clean inside and out. The plus is the swimming pool!!
Guest rating:
As described the house was better than we could have hoped for! Great location for exploring this scenic area of France.
Excellent pool. Really liked the non-fussy interior - really easy to clean etc. For a top family holiday in France you would struggle to find better!
Guest rating:
Le Colombier is a spacious and airy modern house on the fringes of the village. It was comfortable, well furnished and the kitchen was well equipped. It would be ideal for 2 families sharing as there are 2 bedrooms and shower room downstairs and the same upstairs. The owner kindly supplied ramps for the front and back doors as I cannot do steps.
Outside there is ample parking space, a large garden, pool and a shady verandah for hot days.
We enjoyed strolls to the village, which has a boulangerie and grocery shop amongst other facilities. We also enjoyed strolling down to the river, and exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Sarlat is nearby and a must-see, along with Domme and Rocamadour, which are spectacular. There is so much to see and do in this area that another visit is a definitely on the cards.
Guest rating:
Seven of us stayed in this lovely gite for 2 weeks last summer. We liked the location near the village of St Julien de Lampon as it meant that we could walk to the local bakery every day to get our fresh pastries and baguettes. The river is also nearby which made canoeing very accessible.
The property is airy and spacious. There is a large well-equipped kitchen which was handy as we did a lot of home cooking. We ate outside on the terrace on most days. The living room is spacious with comfortable sofas which was great for our movie nights. The pool, in a sunny part of the garden, was great and enjoyed by all. We liked the fact that there was good working Broadband WiFi.
All in all, this was a great holiday. We go to France almost every year, and this was one of our most enjoyable holidays. We did a day trip to the Gouffre de Padirac and to Rocamadour, but apart from that we found plenty to do around St Julien itself.
Guest rating:
We had a wonderful week at the house, pool was used every day, a good touch having the bikes for guests, cycling to the village shop for morning croissants and baguettes and to the local restaurants was a pleasure.
House very well equipped with everything needed on holiday and English channels on the television.
Guest rating:
Very easy to find the villa and once arrived, was not disappointed. The villa is in a stunning location with fields all around, and within walking distance of the river. It's perfectly situated for day trips out to old towns and castles, as well as fun local activities. Not only was the outside beautiful but so was the interior. Already recommended this place to other friends and family. I hope myself to return in the not so distance future!
