A traditional stone-built country house, with a large garden and a beautiful 10 x 5m pool. It is awash with charming and quirky features. Much of the furniture in the house is beautifully preserved antiques, but it has all mod cons too, including a brand new kitchen and bathrooms, high-speed fibre broadband Wifi and a well-equipped utility room. Original oak beams are juxtaposed with new carpets and electrics, and there are hundreds of books (including a large collection of Astérix books) as well as puzzles and games for sociable days. The thick stone walls and cool floor tiles downstairs maintain a natural coolness, and there is air-conditioning to fend off extreme heat in the summer. The house is surrounded by fields and pine forests, which conceal exquisite ‘secret’ lakes – perfect for walking, cycling and riding horses from the many stables near by.
Downstairs:
- Two living rooms – One is part of the large kitchen/dining room, and has a wood burning stove with comfy chairs. The main living room has a piano, another wood-burning stove, a TV with satellite English channels and Netflix etc., a DVD player and a collection of DVDs. The dining area has an extendable handmade table, expertly crafted by our cabinet-maker neighbour.
- Kitchen – the large island houses a fridge, a freezer, a dishwasher and cupboards. The main part of the kitchen has a second fridge, a gas hob, a microwave and an electric oven. There is plenty of storage space, including a walk-in larder. The kitchen has everything an enthusiastic chef could need, including new pans, sets of crockery and cutlery. There are built-in USB ports as well as plenty of sockets and a music system.
- Brand new family bathroom, with two basins, a separate shower and bath.
- Separate toilet, with washbasin.
- Utility room, including a washing machine and tumble drier etc.
- Double bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and chest of drawers.
- Twin bedroom with an antique dresser and table.
Upstairs:
- On the large landing, there are two ‘rooms’, one with an antique double bed, and the other with a single bed and a trundle. Children love these. They can draw the curtains to make private dens, while feeling close to the grown-ups downstairs. The ‘rooms’ have cute little windows, antique chests of drawers and a new fitted carpet.
- Master bedroom – this spacious room has a large chest of drawers and wardrobe as well as a table. With two shuttered windows and a dormer window, this bright room has ample space for remote working.
- En-suite shower room – new walk-in shower, basin and loo.
Large discounts are available on long lets out of peak season, and the house has solar panels to keep bills low.
We are at the crossroads of 4 ‘départements’, the Dordogne, Charente-Maritime, Charente and Gironde. This puts us within easy reach of some of the best that France has to offer: Bergerac, St Emilion, Aubeterre, Cognac and Sarlat, as well as the seaside.
Nearby there is horse riding, kayaking, go-karting, jet-skiing, railbiking (yes, really!) and of course, wine-tasting. There are also many beautiful trails through hills, forests and vineyards if you enjoy walking, running, cycling or pony trekking. For active guests, Lac Sensation Frisson, near the village of Brossac (23 min – 22km) has jetski, a 36m water slide and quad biking. Nearby there’s also cable wakeboarding, kneeboarding and paddle boating.
There are numerous lakes and rivers with sandy beaches near by. 15 minutes to the north is Beauvallon, a swimming lake with a beach, pedalos and a café-restaurant; 15 minutes to the south is the Lac des Nauves in Coutras, with an inflatable obstacle course and aquajets. A great day out is a trip in the morning to the wonderful market in Riberac or Chalais, followed by an afternoon at the sandy beach of Saint-Aulaye, by the river with gorgeous kayaking and a tree-top zip-line park. The surreal turquoise lakes at Guizengeard are a must for photographers.
We are just over an hour from the seaside. Head south to the amazing Dune du Pilat - the largest sand dune in Europe - next to the lovely old seaside town of Arcachon and the chic Cap Ferret. This is definitely worth setting aside a day for. North is Royan (98km, 1h28) and numerous sandy beaches.
Every day there are colourful local farmers’ markets nearby in charming market towns including Chalais (26 min, 24km), Riberac (40 min - 46km), Coutras (16 mins, 14km) and St Seurin (28 min, 28km). There are a number of marchés nocturnes (night markets) in the summer months, where people party in the town square, with street food, music and dancing.
There is a cornucopia of French specialities of the region in local restaurants and markets, including fresh seafood (oysters, mussels and fish), foie gras, duck and many local cheeses. We are surrounded by vineyards where you can visit, taste and buy the wines direct as well as trying Pineau (the local aperitif – delicious chilled) and, of course, Cognac.
A must-see is Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (37km). It is classified as one of the ‘plus beaux villages’ (prettiest villages) of France, with delightful hilltop architecture and a stunning Monolithic Church – the largest underground church in Europe. Part of it was only discovered in 1961; a truck was passing by when the road collapsed, revealing a necropolis below with tombs of crusaders.
The small and historic city of Périgueux (77km) is especially famous for its fine local cuisine and markets. The historical sights and famous Maison des Vins of Bergerac (80km) also make a great day trip.
A little closer is Cognac (62km) with its riverside restaurants, Cognac houses and beautiful historic town. You could combine this with a trip to Jarnac (71km) where you can enjoy brandy tastings and try yet more excellent restaurants.
Heading south, the narrow cobbled lanes of the gorgeous medieval hilltop wine town of Saint-Emilion (33km, 40min) lead to innumerable restaurants, historic buildings and wine houses offering wine tastings. The vineyards and city of Bordeaux (80km) are a spectacular day trip; try the local delicacy of canellés before a visit to the magnificent opera house amidst the grand buildings and fountains.
Blaye (60km) on the Gironde is also worth a visit with its great citadel and good Côtes de Blaye wine. Another day trip is Brantôme, known as the ‘Venice of Perigord’, where you can choose from river cruises, pedalo, horse-drawn barge, canoeing over rapids, the abbey, churches or a Troglodyte tour. There is a choice of chateaux to visit round about.

From the moment I booked the house with Deborah, it was an easy and smooth process and once paid final balance, I received an email with a fully extensive document on how everything works in the house along with suggestions of places to visit and local services nearby.
When we arrived the house is exactly as described and on photos. As we arrived Sunday late afternoon all the supermarkets closed at lunch time. Deborah kindly asked Marie-Yvonne her neighbour and housekeeper to do some shopping for us. I provided a list in advance and all we had asked for was waiting for us when we arrived, we were shown around the house by Marie-Yvonne and were able to communicate with her well with the little French we spoke.
The house is delightful, a real country cottage feel but larger. I took my elderly parents with me and there were rise & recline chairs & a bed as well as walking sticks which was fantastic for my parents.
The house is well equipped with everything you will need, in fact of all the villas or rental houses I have stayed in which is usually 2 to 3 a year this was by far the most equipped of any I have stayed in. Beautiful big kitchen with everything you need. Comfortable lounge and seating areas. The beds were very comfortable.
The pool area is fabulous with very comfortable loungers and seating ares with parasol for hotter days. A great gas BBQ, all you need for days spend in the sunshine.
The location is superb for visiting so many places all within a reasonable driving distance. We visited a few French villages for coffees and lunches. Ideal base for exploring South of France.
I would not hesitate to recommend staying here, from fabulous owner, lovely neighbours Marie-Yvonne & Joel who are on hand if you need anything to a beautiful house.
Thank you Deborah for renting your house to us.
