La Détente is a spacious, well-equipped 4 bedroom house with a private driveway, pool and garden overlooking the village of Caylus.
The house comprises:
- Four double bedrooms, one with twin beds
- Two shower rooms and one bathroom
- Open plan dining room and lounge
- Fully equipped kitchen
- Utility room inc. washing machine and second fridge
- Terrace with bbq and two seating areas.
La Détente has the feel of a secluded country home whilst being only ten minutes walk from the centre of the village. Here there is a choice of restaurants, cafés and bakeries as well as a greengrocer, mini supermarket and other amenities. A relaxed day can be spent wandering the medieval streets, lunching by the lake and strolling through the valley to our local site, the petrified waterfall, all without getting in the car.
The property overlooks the medieval village of Caylus in the Tarn et Garonne. The area is excellent for walking and cycling with many marked footpaths weaving in and out of the valley between fields and woodland.
Opportunities for outdoor activities are plentiful and there are many beautiful medieval villages to discover. Half an hours drive can take you to Najac or Penne with their 12th and 13th century fortresses or to St-Antonin-Noble-Val in the Gorges du Tarn with it’s picturesque riverside setting and choice of restaurants and shops. Further afield there is Puycelsi, Cordes sur Ciel and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, each with impressive views across the landscape. Local historic sites include the Abbaye de Beaulieu and the charming Chateau de Cas. There are several caves with guided tours under an hours drive including the Grotte préhistorique de Foissac and the Grotte du Peche Merle where you can see an array of cave paintings.
Caylus is 30-40mins drive from several busy country towns, notably Caussade and the Bastide town of Villefranche de Roeurgue. Weekly markets, artisanal produce and night markets are a feature throughout summer. As are live music and traditional village fêtes celebrating agriculture and country life.

We stayed at La Detente for 2 weeks in August and had such lovely holiday. The house is ideal, really well-equipped, extremely clean and in a really great location within easy walking distance to the small medieval town, but still quiet and peaceful. The garden and pool are great for relaxing and there is an amazing view of the town in the distance. Jayne was super friendly and helpful from the first contact about booking and all the way through to our arrival. We were also lucky enough to get to know the owners, Paul and Julie, while we were there, they are simply lovely and made our holiday even better! We’ve holidayed in this area for many years but this house, the location and the wonderful hospitality made this holiday really quite special. We hope to go back soon.

We had a wonderful time in Caylus and La Détente is a bit of a gem!
Loved the house, great position and lovely views of the village, a great pool, especially for children, and ideal outside space with the terraces, couldn’t better it really. Also liked the idea that we could walk into the village, although I don’t think I’m as fit as I thought I was !
The whole area is stunning; loved St. Antonin and thought Najac was one of the prettiest villages I’ve seen in France and what a great setting.
Also Enjoyed meeting Paul and Julie, they were great fun and really looked after us. We will hopefully meet up again sometime when we’re back in that area.
I/we would definitely go back to La Détente -it had everything we needed. We all had a great time and thanks for your help Jayne in sorting it all out.Guest rating:
We had a very relaxing two weeks at La Detente. The house is really well equipped and the pool area is great. A short walk to the town (up and down hill, so kept us fit!) so we’ll placed in the town. The owners were very helpful and super friendly. All in all a great holiday.

We very much enjoyed our week here in July 2022. The house is very conveniently located on the edge of the pretty town of Caylus, but nonetheless is in a private location and has a lovely feeling of being in the countryside. The large garden is very attractive and well maintained, with a great pool and substantial terracing, and a beautiful view of Caylus. The house itself is lovely – very conveniently and comfortably appointed, attractively decorated, and efficiently laid out. We are a family of 4, and there was lots of space for all of us.

A lovely, spacious house, well equipped and exceptionally clean. Perfect for outside dining with views of the village and surrounding forests.
A beautiful peaceful location but walking distance from the village.
The owners went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

We love everything about this property, especially the pool and the amazing views to the medieval village of Caylus. The house itself is well-equipped and the secluded gardens totally enclosed, which is great for your peace of mind if you are bringing pets, as we did. We love the fact that Caylus is a short but rather steep walk away for all your shopping needs, including a butcher and a wine merchant. This is a lovely corner of France with much to explore but if your idea of a holiday is to just chill by the pool in a tranquil setting then this is also the perfect place to do so. This was our second stay and we have just booked again for next year.

We absolutely loved La Detente. It was really clean, very well equipped and comfortable. The furniture and furnishings were just right – good quality and comfortable yet not so posh that we were scared to use them. We really felt at home and made really good use of the beautiful garden and outside terraces for eating and drinking in the evenings.
The pool was just lovely, especially as it reached 40 degrees on two of the days of our holiday. The kids spent hours in it every day, the first time they had been allowed to swim for four months due to Covid-19 restrictions. I thought at points that they might dissolve!
We had lots of trips out – canoeing, wild water swimming, hill walking, visiting the little towns and villages all around and the really lovely market at St Antonin. The area was a bit of a revelation. We’ve been all over France and we thought it was just beautiful. How did we miss it after all these years?
We will definitely be back as there was so much we didn’t get to explore. Two weeks just wasn’t enough to admire the beautiful countryside and surrounding gorges and valleys. We already have a list of swim spots, prehistoric caves and pretty bars and eateries that we didn’t get time to visit.
After a really difficult year of lockdown in a big city, we’re returned really relaxed and happy and ready for whatever life throws at us in the Autumn. Thanks to Jayne for organising at the drop of the quarantine hat!Guest rating:
La Detente is a spacious, well-equipped house perfect for couples/families who want a quiet escape. it is has everything you are likely to need . The views from the front of the villa and the terrace are lovely – it was a real delight to sit there in the evening and watch the sun set over Caylus. or to have breakfast outside and watch the sun rise onto the town. The pool is wonderful – a good size for proper swimming. The table-tennis was a lovely addition. Although the house is big it feels homely. Everything was clean and tidy on arrival and Jayne was so helpful with the booking process. Arrival/check-in was straightforward. If you are looking for a holiday where you don’t need a car for everyday things, then the location of La Detente is excellent. Caylus has everything you need in walking distance, although there are some steep hills. The small shop in town, along with a wonderful boulangerie/patisserie, has everyday bits and pieces. There are bars, cafes and a Saturday/Tuesday morning market. There is a small supermarket at the opposite end of town which stocks everything you’d need for a week’s holiday. All of these are 10 – 15 minutes walk at an ‘average’ walking speed. Thank you for letting us stay at La Detente.

We stayed here for 2 weeks in July and had a fantastic time. There were 4 adults and 2 young children. The house is very spacious, comfortable and has everything you need. It was very hot so the partial air conditioning and fans were very welcome! The pool was used a lot and is a good size. Caylus is lovely. The local Boulanger provides excellent bread, croissants etc and the brasserie on the corner has a friendly atmosphere. This is a lovely area of France with lots to see and do.

This is a fantastic house in a perfect, slightly overlooked area of France. It is equipped to a high standard and is very comfortable inside and out. In particular, we loved the versatile outdoor eating facilities which enable sun or shade throughout the day and a wonderful view of Caylus. The pool is bigger than usual allowing a wide variety of volleyball and waterpolo variants for those with energy to burn! Otherwise, the pool cover ensures the water temperature is bath-like for those of a more restful disposition… The location of the house makes it unique in our experience of renting houses in that it is an easy walk to the amenities of a small town (including two bakeries, a nice restaurant -La Renaissance- and a tourist office) but it feels private and peaceful. We set off on a number of waymarked and random walks from the house, availed of kayaking facilities in nearby Najac and stocked up in the excellent Monday market in Caussade. Needless to say, we would be very happy to return to this haven. On top of this, The property manager (Jayne) couldn’t have been more helpful.

Our fourth time here and it never ceases to thrill us with its lovely views of Caylus and the warm welcome we get from the locals. We were only here for a week this time but the weather was amazing – too hot really. The pool was like getting into a warm bath – the temperature never dropped below 32C in the day so we didn’t do much except swim and read. Although we did manage to get in a few games of table tennis as well. Only slight problem we had was that the grass was a bit long to play Boule – kept losing the jack.
It was good to note a number of improvements since last year. The new hob and oven in the kitchen were excellent. We think that the cutlery, plates and pans had all been replaced as well. Most welcome was the new cover for the pool. This should keep the water warmer in September, when we are hoping to come next year. Hopefully it will be cool enough to get some walking in, which has been impossible this year.Guest rating:
We had a fantastic time at la detente, I don’t think we’ve ever had such a relaxing holiday.
The house was well equipped with everything you could want. We didn’t expect the hill up to the village to be quite so steep but the bakery made it well worth the walk! ‘’
Overall we had a brilliant time.
