Lovely Converted Old Mill with Heated Pool
Le Moulin de la Materette is a substantially built old Mill converted to a very high standard. It has 7 double rooms each with private facilities, a well equipped kitchen and vast living room. The Mill is set into 13 acres of beautiful garden and wood beside 600 metres of tranquil trout stream. Enjoy the natural surroundings or relax by the large heated pool (13m x 6m) with its landscaped and stone flagged surround. Beyond the pool is a badminton court, table tennis, a 10ft chess board and a hacienda/pool side bar with pergola and flagged surround to give a semi shaded area to enjoy a drink at lunch time. In front of the Mill is a large tiled terrace ideal for eating or relaxing, shaded in the heat of the day, but in the sunshine for mornings and evenings. In front of the terrace enjoy the croquet lawn and boules pitch.
There is also a Grange 50m away. The Grange has an additional 4 ensuite rooms to accommodate larger parties. It is never rented out separately. The garden includes two orchards, a wild flower meadow and raised vegetable beds, some produce may be available in season. This year automatic sprinkler systems are being installed to keep the grounds verdant throughout the Summer.
Beyond the raised beds the owners have created a woodland walk on a 250 metres island that is surrounded by the River Arize the Mill Race and the weir. The walk ends in a small pebbly beach below the weir. An idyllic spot to enjoy a quiet read or soak up the sounds of nature.
At the start of the woodland walk is a Wood fired Sauna, a cold plunge pool and a wood fired Hot Tub / Jacuzzi
New this year are 2 canoes that allow you 300 metres of canoeing above the Weir. A chance to see king fishers herons and other wild life, whilst gently paddling up stream.

Superb setting in 13 acres of private grounds, a mixture of formal gardens, orchards, meadows and woods by a the river Arize . A peaceful location away from the main road, yet close to many of the attractions in this very special part of France.
There are a good choice of restaurants close by. Also, there are always 100 + bottles of chateau wine held in stock available at modest cost.
The setting of the Moulin is spectacular and wondrous to lovers of nature. With regular visits by kingfishers, dippers, treecreepers, buzzards, kites and occasional eagles to name but a few of our feathered friends. Red squirrels, deer and sanglier are never that far away.
Set midway between Foix and St Girons, in arguably the most beautiful part of France. The location enjoys the benefits of beauty, history and amazing facilities. The Pyrenees, Cathar Castles, the Meren pony trekking centre, lake swimming only 10km away, and the best golf course in the Ariege at only £14 per round! All within 25mins! What could be better? Yet the Ariege is possibly the least populated area of France, particularly by visitors to this undiscovered region.

Woodturning, Digital Photography & Painting Courses
Nick and Fran Davidson have been running residential courses for 25 years in the UK and for the past 6 years at their wonderful Moulin in the French Pyrenees. The courses in France are based round a 6 day holiday in which you have 5 half days of expert tuition.
Courses available are Woodturning, Digital Photography & Painting (Watercolour, Oil & Acrylic). All the courses are available as a combination, i.e. one partner can Woodturn while the other Paints or does Digital Photography. Alternatively partners need not attend a course and can just enjoy relaxing in the wonderful surroundings, enjoying the superb facilities of the Moulin whilst their partner paints etc. There is still the rest of the day to enjoy together the spectacular surroundings, Cathar Castles, Prehistoric Caves, Wonderful walks in the mountains etc. Then return in the evening to a convivial dinner party with the other guests.

- 4 course evening meals with predinner drinks, wine and coffee is £19.50 each

Early and Late Golfing Weeks
In March and late October/November, when the golf courses in the UK are cold, wet and sometimes unplayable, we organise golfing weeks at £425 per person including 3 games of golf, B&B and 4 course evening meals with wine, coffee etc. (travel not included).

How to get to Le Moulin de la Materette and Grange
By air to Carcassonne or Toulouse.
80 minute drive from both airports. Take the directions to Foix.
By Rail - Travel to Foix via Toulouse.
Directions from Foix by car.(25minutes) Take D117 West - Direction St Girons. 19kms from Foix proceed through Le Bastide de Serou. Continue another 3 kms along the D117 and turn right on the D15, direction Durban sur Arize & Mas d'Azil. 500 metres from the junction you will pass the Moulin on the right. You will need to proceed past another 100 metres and turn around to approach the Moulin from the Durban direction so that you can proceed down the drive. If you approach from Durban sur Arize, we are exactly 1 mile from the village 1.6km.
