Hillside Farmhouse with Pool and Stunning Views
The house is set in a spectacular hillside position in peaceful, rolling woodland, with adjoining stone barn encircling a south-facing courtyard, and is set amongst 13 acres of its own fields and woods. It is 2 kilometers just south-east of Cazals, a beautiful small town northwest of Cahors.
The buildings consist of a converted spacious stone house with a large, attached, L shaped barn and bread oven. The house lies in a mixture of open meadows, old vine fields and woods containing nut and fruit trees. There are a number of tracks leading into the woods and meadows surrounding the house and an old Roman stone road threading through these grounds covering more than 5.5 Hectares.
On the south and west, the ground slopes away to the floor of the Masse valley and hillside beyond. The large swimming pool (12 x 6 meters) is next to the house on a higher meadow, so that the view from pool looks over the house and barn to the hills beyond the valley. The house has central heating so can be used off season.
General Information
There is an old bread oven, currently housing garden furniture, including a large outside table and pool equipment. There is also a large (rain) water tank outside and in the barn there is a barbecue. The pool is well lit at night and has a 'contra-courant' whirlpool. You have sole use of the pool. The games area in the barn has a table-tennis table with bats and balls. There are also bicycles, badminton and other games. Plenty of grassy space surrounds the house, and several paths lead in different directions from the garden to the fields and woods.
Smaller parties may be able to book the house at a lower rate if the second floor accommodation is not required. This is subject to availability (usually when the time of booking is less than five weeks before the rental period). A baby sitter is available.
Sleeps 10-12 + cot
The ground floor consists of a large lounge (5m x 5m) with an open plan fireplace, connecting to a spacious kitchen/dining room (4m x 5m), which is very well equipped with a cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The rear door from the kitchen/dining room leads to a utility room containing a washing machine and tumble drier. The kitchen/dining room has French windows to the forecourt and a large dining table.
Upstairs, on the first floor, there are three bedrooms and a shower room, with wash basin and WC. Two bedrooms are large double rooms (the double beds are queen-size), with the third being about 4m x 2.5m, with bunk beds. On the second floor there are two further bedrooms both with twin beds, and a bathroom, with bath and shower, wash basin and toilet.
There is a telephone for incoming and outgoing local calls, a television/video, small hi-fi and large fire place in the lounge. The house has gas central heating for the cooler months and is available for winter and long term lets. There is a supply of videos and CD's, and toys and games for the children. In the lounge there are two bed settees.
Much of the thirteen acres is a mixture of oak woodland, with some fields cut by the local farmer. Near the house there is a well and you'll find many fruit trees, old vines in the woods and figs and walnuts in September/October.
The nearest village is Gindou, and Cazals has all amenities. There are many good restaurants in the area and the main towns on the Lot (e.g. Prayssac, Puy-l'Eveque, Cahors) are just over half an hour away. Cazals has an good food market every Sunday morning, selling local produce, and there is a larger one at Prayssac, some 12 k away, each Friday morning.
To the north of Bargues the Dordogne is about 35 minutes away (Domme, Baynac and Sarlat). Further afield, there is Rocamadour (rock city) and Padirac (underground caves and lake). Cahors is an ancient town, pre-dating the Romans, and sits on the Lot river 25 minutes away. There are many medieval villages, markets and vineyards surrounding the Cahors region, together with rich wine-growing areas and attractive towns which follow the banks of the Lot. Up-river from Cahors there is the beautiful village of St Cirq Lapopie. Many other attractions include regions famous for truffels, bastide towns, chateau and the prehistoric caves at Peche-Merle.
Bargues provides a good centre from which to explore all the Lot: riding, canoeing and fishing on the river and nearby lakes are available.
