Salernes (Var)
Built on the slopes that run down from its castle to the River Bresque, Salernes has been a major centre for decoratve tile making since the 19th century; in more recent times this artisan heritage has broadened to include pottery workshops and artists studios. Its economy rests on what it produces unlike many villages which rely solely on tourism and retirees seeking the sun, and therein lies its appeal.
Salernes provides shops and professional services for the surrounding area. There is a large shaded square with cafes and small restaurants, a museum (Terra Rosa) dedicated to the history of tile making, and a twice-weekly market. There are banks in the village centre and the garages on the Draguignan road are agencies for most popular cars.
Villecroze, Tourtour, Entrecasteaux and Sillans la Cascade have close ties to Salernes both commercially and administratively. They are smaller and each has their own unique charm and claim on the tourist's 'time: Villecroze for its grottoes; Tourtour for its view; Entrecasteaux for its castle and Le Notre garden; and Sillans for its waterfall.
