18th Century Watermill in the Druance Valley . Exclusive rental .
La Moulin de la Houssaye is situated in the beautiful valley of the River Druance. Standing in 10 acres of hay meadows and ancient Bluebell Woodland, La Houssaye was originally a corn-grinding mill with its own independant brick beehive Bakehouse which is still standing, it was later used as a base to repair tanks when occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. Two of the original four mill wheels have now been replaced and it now generates its own electricity using the passing mill stream.
The market town of Condé sur Noireau is a 10 minute drive and has all amenities. Ideally situated, the mill is situated on & close by to several large rambling routes, which trail through the wonderfully unspoilt Normandy countryside. At just over an hour from the coast, La Houssaye is within easy reach of the Normandy landing beaches, Mont St Michel and many other attractions that Normandy has to offer.
The ground floor has been converted into comfortable self catering guest accommodation for a holiday let for weekly rentals, and being all on one level makes it suitable for all.

Walks: Written by Sarah & Angus Sept 2021
We stayed in late October-early November as Autumn really began to show its colors, and the many fungi can be seen, along with sweet chestnuts.
From the Gite you can basically head in any direction depending upon how far you want to walk. Once you get used to the signage used for denoting footpaths it’s pretty straightforward.
Horizontal purple and yellow stripes – which can be on a wall, tree, signpost, gate mean straight on. An ‘X’ using these 2 colors means you’re not on a footpath, and an inverted ‘L’ with the same colors suggests you take a turning.
Walk 1:
Turn left out of the gate and follow the track uphill to the top where it joins a footpath, and then a metaled road to a ‘T’ junction where you can turn left or right. We went left and followed the signs all the way to the junction where it gets a bit complicated.
Walk 2:
Turn left out of the gate and having immediately crossed the ‘mill-race’ (about 30m) keep on the flat with the mill race on your right. It climbs slightly and after around 800m descends to ‘T’ junction where you can turn left and carry on uphill to the top and bear right. Follow this track through the woods to the quiet road, turn right facing any oncoming traffic and carry on along the road until you can turn right into the road taking you back along the valley floor towards the Gite.
Walks 3 & 4:
Follow the track from the Gite to the road and turn left. Walk for about 500m until you come to a disused quarry on your right and immediately past this, before the river bridge, on the right hand side is a track going uphill into the woods.
- Here you have several options:
Option 1 (longish walk 8-10km): after about 100m turn right and follow the track up a steeper incline and at the top turn right and follow the footpath signs which take you along a gently undulating path until you reach the back of the outbuildings opposite the Chateau. Take an acute left turn and uphill until you join a metaled lane. Follow this to a crossroads and turn left (there’s an equestrian center and sign). - Option 2 (longish walk 8-10km):
Carry straight on uphill and down the other side to the road, turn right and after 600m turn left onto signposted track and follow this - Other options: Wande<

Just returned home from a weeks motorcycle trip in the Normandy region of France. We had a couple of nights near Le Mans for the Moto GP and then needed a good base for the rest of the week to tour the WW2 places of interest along with some traditional scenic site seeing. After quite alot of planning and reviews read, we decided on the Windmill for our base, as it was in the region but perfectly placed an hour away from most places we planned on visiting. From Pégasus Bridge ( including the cafe, museum and Ranville cemetery- where the first soldier to lose his life on June 6th D-Day is buried) in Caen, Sword Beach, Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, Bayeux with the British / Commonwealth cemetery and the tapestry, arromanches and Pointe du hoc among many other sites. We also visited Mont St Michel ( highly recommended), St Malo (old town) and Deauvillle. This was the perfect place to enjoy the amazing roads in the countryside as we never once hit a toll, 5 miles from the nearest town (Aldi, Petrol stations, lovely bakery, takeaways and restaurants). The Accomodation was perfect with a garage for the bikes, beautiful setting in country and Nicola the host was so welcoming and helpful - thank you Nicola, hope to see you again.Guest rating:
Just arrived home from an absolutley fabulous stay at the Watermill. This was a biking holiday for myself and a friend and couldn't of found a better place to stay. The accommodation was fantasic and the garage, well what can i say..!! It was more than we could ever imagined with full use of tools. Perfect spot for touring around Normandy and surrounding areas. And what can we say about Nicola, she was fantastic, we have never felt so at home on holiday before. She was brilliant. Nicola helped us with anything we needed, including finding us a fabulous restaraunt that we went to and took Nicola with us to say a big thank you for everything she did for us and the great stay we had. We also fell in love with the dog tick too. Will definatley be retuning in the future. Claire sends her thanks to Nicola for taking me (Darren) off her hands for a week. Darren & ChrisGuest rating:
Delightful watermill in tranquil countryside setting. The accommodation had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday, including Wi-Fi and English satellite TV. The charming and helpful English owner Nicola lives upstairs. The mill is on a working farm/smallholding with docile sheep and the owner's dog Tick was also very friendly. Although is was early October when we visited, it was warm enough to have dinner sitting outside in the evening. Nearby Conde Sur Noireau has a good supermarket and restaurants, plus a petrol station.Guest rating:
It's not hard to see why The Watermill has received a string of 5-star reviews: it's a cosy ground floor apartment in a 200-300 year-old watermill, in a lovely valley which is exceptionally peaceful. I've never known a holiday gite that's so quiet and relaxing at such a reasonable price. The perfect base for local walks through the stunning Suisse Normande and one-hour drives to the Normandy beaches: Arromanches and the American Cemetery are recommended. Also the slightly longer drive to the stunning Mont Saint-Michel. Not to be missed is the Thursday market in the local town, Conde sur Noireau, and the nearby Mont de Cerisy Belle Etoile with its ruined chateau. The hard-working Nicola (a Norfolk lass) is an exceptional host, providing much appreciated provisions on arrival. Highly recommended.Guest rating:
Thank you for a great stay at the Watermill. After getting a little lost and arriving late the three of us and our rescue dog Orla received a lovely welcome from Nicola. The ground floor apartment was fantastic, equipped with all the facilities you would wish for and situated in beautiful surroundings. The Watermill was perfect for walks with countless routes to choose from right on our doorstop, the men in our party really enjoyed the cycling in the local area with plenty of challenging hills across the rolling French countryside, the area amongst one of the best they have visited. Ticky Nicolas gorgeous dog got on famously with our Orla, I had offered a swap but she was not having any of it. Thank you Nicola for letting us stay at the Watermill we all thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely hope to be back. Thanks Pete & CarmelGuest rating:
The watermill is a great find. Set just off a quiet country lane in a wooden valley we were greeted by Nicola the host, Marmalade the cat and Ticky the playful dog. The gite has a pleasant atmosphere, and Nicola could not be more helpful. The gite is ideally placed to explore Normandy as it's location is central. Will be booking again for next year. We just returned for a motorbike starting with a week's stay the Watermill in Normandy. What a peaceful location, situated perfectly for rides out to the Normandy D-Day beaches. The Watermill was cosy and felt home-like straight away, definitely helped by our wonderful Hostess Nicola that was more than helpful and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and easy. We also had use of the garage for the bikes which was great. I'd recommend the watermill to friends for a quiet getaway or as a base for touring. Can't wait to come and stay again!

Thank you for a great welcome when we arrived and for the food essentials to get us going in the morning before getting to the local bakers, it was great to chat with a fellow ex-pat and swap stories of building houses in foreign lands!
It was a perfect location for us, quiet and off the tourist routes allowing us to visit more of southern Normandy and truly "get away". My eldest enjoyed stargazing and they both loved sitting by the logfire in the evenings, then saying good morning to the sheep and of course Tiggy the dog.
Just the right size for us, not too big that the girls spread "things" all over, not too small and with everything needed for a week away. We had a great time.Guest rating:
After a few hundred miles & looking like drowned rats, we found the farm Watermill deep in the french countryside, and it was picturesque. We had a locked garage to store the bikes & beer in the fridge - we had arrived.
The Watermill is perfectly placed for a good ride to all the D-day sites, which we covered in 2 days on the bikes, and yes, we are going back. I had never driven in France, but the French were great - both the bikers with their salute and the car drivers who pulled over upon seeing our bikes.
The local town had everything we needed to stock up, and even a kebab house (not very french I know).
Nicola was amazing & extremely helpful, both with suggestions & afterwardsGuest rating:
We are safely home after a reasonable but quite arduous drive and are already missing the peace and tranquility of your rural retreat. It was wonderful to indulge in a bit of “far ninete” in the beautiful flower-covered Suisse Normande. It was a real pleasure to meet you and get to know the region a little. You were the perfect hostess, if I may say so. Also, waking up to the pastoral sounds of sheep and birdsong was fodder for the soul; you are so lucky to live in such a fabulous part of France! Thank you for helping to make our holiday so special.Guest rating:
Peace, quiet, away from it all and great for nature lovers……trees, birds and all sorts of wildlife……we even saw a Pinemarten nearby. The River Druance runs through the fields of the property which was another bonus.
Nicola’s welcome was open and friendly and she had thoughtfully provided the accommodation with many basics, which was generous. She was always happy to answer questions about the area. Visitors really do need their own transport as nearest town is a few kms away however well served with excellent supermarkets on the outskirts. The surrounding countryside is inviting and picturesque.Guest rating:
Just had a holiday at La Houssaye, 14770,la chapelle engerbold and what a place. The house is beautiful and set in stunning surroundings. A brilliant base camp for exploring Normandy. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable with lots of history. The host Nicola is extremely welcoming and very helpful. Nothing was ever a problem and she was always happy to help. Having Nicola who is fluent in French is definitely a huge help. We even had the garage to store our motorbikes in which is an added bonus. All in all a fantastic place and we’ll definitely be back.

Hi Nicola just a quick note to say thanks for our time with you, we really enjoyed our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to come again and also recommend your lovely house to our friends.
Best wishesGuest rating:
The house is set in a beautiful spot. The nearby château is very striking, and you travel down a quiet country land until turning off to the house. We found it to be very peaceful.
The accommodation is well presented and homely. We found a well equipped kitchen and nice bathroom. The bed was comfortable too. We made use of the gorgeous log burner each evening.
Nicola showed us around the accommodation, and kindly brought us some milk, orange juice, bread and cidre. She was an extremely accommodating and friendly host. Nicola also gave us some good advice concerning the local area. We enjoyed a visit to the local market on Thursday, as well as a meal out La Licorne restuarant.
We spent the majority of our holiday exploring the region: Bayeux, Caen, the D-day beaches, Falaise (really worth visiting Falaise Castle).Guest rating:
We had a brilliant time at La Houssaye in September 2021
The house is characterful and comfortable- quintessentially French in its atmosphere and style. Set in beautiful countryside with lots of good walks very close by. Great for nature lovers and very unspoiled. We really enjoyed visiting the D Day landing beaches and museums which were within striking distance. The old town of Bayeaux and Mont St Michel were particular highlights.
Nicola was a wonderful host; so friendly and available for advice when needed.
A fabulous place- we hope to return!Guest rating:
We loved staying in ‘La Houssaye’.
From our perspective we were looking for somewhere with direct access to footpaths/tracks so that we could walk our Griffon Korthal, and preferably in a rural location but with reasonable access to a Supermarket/Boulangerie/Market.
We were also looking to source edible fungi – which we found in abundance.
This place was idyllic. No light pollution, virtually no traffic on the nearby ‘lane’ and with Conde sur Noireau about 6 miles away.
Nicola is the perfect host – invisible until you need something. The ‘gite’ has a lovely log-burning stove (with a plentiful supply of wood), large lounge space with a bathroom (with shower) and kitchen off it, and 2 bedrooms. There’s spacious car-parking immediately outside.Guest rating:
We stayed at le moulin in September. On arrival we were wowed by the beauty of the watermill and it's surroundings, Nicola came straight to greet us and couldn't have been more welcoming. The accommodation itself is lovely even better than the photos, with my limited mobility I found everything very comfortable and easy to use with just the step into the shower. A really pretty area of France to explore and also within comfortable reach of the D Day beaches. Whilst here we had a problem with our car which Nicola happily helped us to sort out. We had a really lovely stay and we have been visiting France for over 20 years we thoroughly recommend. Lovely fresh welcome pack. Thankyou Nicola hope to see you again Janet and Mark.Guest rating:
La Houssaye is a beautiful watermill in the middle of the Normandy countryside. The perfect place to unwind and recharge your batteries. Nicola, the English owner, is a lovely lady who could not do enough to make our stay perfect. The Mill is situated in a valley surrounded by woodland and pastures, it also has a stream running beside it, which we walked, seeing numerous brown trout rising. I wish I had brought my short fly rod! In the evening, sitting under the most amazing blanket of stars, listening to owls and having a glass or two of wine, made us realise this was heaven. We will most definitely be revisiting La Houssaye and Nicola.
Guest rating:
Nicola is the most welcoming host you could wish for! The accommodation was just perfect for us, private and in the middle of the countryside, the only sounds being birdsong and the occasional sheep. This was our first motorbike trip abroad and The Watermill was a perfect location to ride out from each day to go and explore. The accommodation had everything that we needed, and very important for us - Nicola provided decent English tea bags (!!) - being English herself. Nicola's accommodation is perfect for bikers (motor and pedal), walkers, birdwatchers or just for a peaceful retreat.Guest rating:
The Watermill is an amazing place, beautifully situated in the heart of woodlands and forest, where the soundtrack to life is of countless birdsongs, the breeze in the trees and the flow of the nearby river. An escape from the madding crowd, where peace and nature surround and seduce you. The mill has all the facilities you need, 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining area, a shower and washroom. Getting provisions is a 10 minute drive away. Normandy is well known for it's WW2 history, which is why we came here, and there are plenty of sites and museums in easy travelling distance. Nicola the owner is fabulous, so welcoming, and will bend over backwards to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. We can't wait to return to visit our new friend in her beautiful watermill.Guest rating:
My wife and I stayed at the Water Mill for two weeks this September 2018. We have been regular visitors to France, but have never stayed in the Normandy region.
We were pleasantly surprised. The Mill is set in a wooded valley which is so quite that you can hear it. The accommodation is on one level containing a lounge come diner with a kitchen and two bedrooms. The accommodation is clean. Everything that you might need is available. If you are into peace and quiet and enjoy nature this is the place to stay. You also have numerous historical sites nearby. Nicola who owns the property and lives in the top floor of the Mill is a real gem. We arrived as strangers and felt when we left we had made a friend. The Mill is excellent value a real find.
