The Village
Saumane de Vaucluse is a charming, picturesque and anthentic provencal village built at the top of a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Sorgue valley.
Walking around the extremely charming narrow village streets you'll happen upon a number of pretty fountains, typical, beautiful stone-built houses, remains of the former ramparts as well as the keep from the ancient "castrum "Salmana" which dates back to the XII°C.
Right at the top of the village there is a dominating fortress castle which in former times once belonged to the uncle of the Marquis de Sade. Built originally in the XII°C and then transformed into the fortress in the XV°C, the castle was abandoned during the French Revolution to be restored in the XIX°C.
The golf
The Provence Country Club is situated 1 km far from Saumane de Vaucluse. The 18 hole championship golf course is 6099 Metres, with a Par 72 designed in 1991 by the leading French designer Jean Garialde, a former champion, is set amidst hills and provençal forest with mature pines and oaks, lakes, fountains and many bunkers, broad lush permanently watered, undulating, dish-shaped fairways with doglegs and sloping true greens with devilish burrows (I found very difficult!); with exceptional views of the forest and chalky foothills of the Monts de Vaucluse, the Alpilles, the Luberon, and the Sorgue valley – especially from the Tee of hole number 5 offering one of the most majestic panoramas of the surrounding towns and villages imaginable. The 18 is a tight left dog leg but returns to the clubhouse restaurant with a very difficult fast green.
However, it can be enjoyed by all golfers with a wide variety of experience, aptitude and ambition. It is difficult from the white tees but more accessible from the yellow, red and blue tees. Additional facilities include a driving range, practice green and golf tuition. A 5-hole short course is due to open in 2007. On this natural well sheltered site, the majority of shots are slightly sloping and the greens are renowned as technical. The "Canal de Carpentras", which separates the golf course in two and makes the 17 very interesting (you will see what I mean..), provides all of the sites water. Several ponds inhabited by carps, decorate the course, but their side location will not stress golfers unduly, but still seemed to attract too many of our golf balls.
Surroundings
L'Isle sur la Sorgue, 6 km far from Saumane de Vaucluse, is one of those places in Provence that one has to see.
Its colors are nature's green and the bright reflection of the water shining from the several canals running through its center. The river Sorgue surrounds the city as if to hug it. Walking along the canals you will notice how they run between the narrow ancient streets. There are little bridges to cross and great wheels to look at with mossy blades turning in the river.
Antique lovers and art collectors will be gratified by the nearly 300 permanent antique dealers and second hand shops here. L'Isle sur la Sorgue hosts antiques' fairs at Easter and over the August 15th holiday that have given a worldwide reputation to this small city. More than 500 antique dealers and second hand dealers gather here to show their treasures to customers from all over the world.
The success of Fontaine de Vaucluse, 5 km far from Saumane de Vaucluse, is due to the impressive spring which flows out of the 230 m high cliff. This gigantic source is the most powerful on France and fifth in the world. 630 million cubic meters of water flow out every year. The emerald green calm summer waters become spectacular in the wet seasons, (automn and spring). 90 m3 of water per second spill into the bed of the River Sorgue. In all seasons secondary sources flow into the river to create an extremely beautiful shady pool, under the immense plane trees. Fontaine de Vaucluse gave its name to the département.
Visit also some of the « plus beaux villages de France » : Venasque (14 km), Gordes (18 km ), Ménerbes (18 km) and Roussillon (26 km).

We had a very enjoyable fortnight at this property which is very comfortable, homely, and well equipped. The outside space is excellent, with lovely views and a variety of tables and chairs which allow you to choose between sun and shade at any time of day. We used and enjoyed the pool every day during the first 2 weeks of September. The road up to the house is very steep and quite hair-raising, but take the owner's advice and tackle in reverse gear, at least as far as the hairpin bend. Although the house sleeps 7 there were only 3 of us in our party but the house didn't feel too big. We can't wait to make a return visit, thank you.Guest rating:
We had a really lovely stay at Le Lavandin. It was a peaceful place but also close to lots of great places to visit. The village itself does not have any shops but Isle Sur La Sorgue is just a short drive away. The last little bit of the drive has serious hair pin bends on a steep slope but you'll get used to them after the first day or so. It was our first visit to this part of France. After this experience it won't be our last!Guest rating:
We thoroughly recommend Le Lavandin to other families looking for a peaceful French experience in an unspoilt old village, away from the crowds. There are no photographs of the outside of the house on the website, so we were not sure what to expect. It is, however, very beautiful and didn't disappoint us. It was very clean and well equipped. We ate all our meals outside on the dining terrace under the tree, admiring the beautiful views across the valley and looking up towards the church. The swimming pool is fantastic and was especially enjoyed by our two teenagers. There is a lot to see and do in the area. Sadly we could only stay a week and were very reluctant to pack up and leave. The owner gave us lots of useful information before we arrived and the local agent, Carole, was very helpful.Guest rating:
The photographs really don't do this property justice. It's a beautiful house in a great location. We stayed for three weeks last summer and are planning to go back this year for another 3. Great pool the kids loved, fantastic outdoor dining terrace, a two minute walk to a really nice bar and restaurant and only a 10 minute drive to supermarkets, restaurants and shops. There are walking and mountain bike trails all around, kayaks down the road and a huge high ropes park close by for kids or all ages.Guest rating:
It has been sometime since we stayed here, we arrived early in the season (June) but it was already warm and dry. Memorable highlights of the property: The view is spectacular. Dining outside is amazing. Listening to the rustles of the leaves is all the soundtrack you will ever need. The lavender and garden are pleasant, filled with butterflies and bees. Wow. The swimming pool is excellent, it has a solar heat bubble to keep it warm. Refreshing and well maintained by professional pool service. The Intermarche in town was one of the best I have been to. Also fabulous ice cream. High end dining in town. Crepe availability is good. The kitchen was nothing special, upstairs bathroom was well equipped, nice house but not in the upper echelons of rentals. If the weather is good, you will have an exquisite experience. Can't speak to WIFI etc as it has been a while.
Guest rating:
We thought Le Lavandin was wonderful, welcoming and very clean. We enjoyed our stay so much that we booked another holiday there as soon as we returned home! Children and adults alike enjoyed our time there - it was memorable and happy for all. The terrace is a spectacular place to enjoy family meals together with stunning views. The pool is idyllic both by day and night. The house is beautiful and perfect for our family as it is private, well equipped and clean.
