Village Holiday Cottage with Walled Private Garden
Our holiday cottage is located in the Loire Valley, a 15 minute drive from the city of Tours. It is a detached cottage built at the end of the 19c and is located in a quiet quarter of the village of Nouzilly. With its own private walled garden, the house is full of character and charm with oak beams throughout. The owner is English, living permanently in France. The house is fully modernised, double glazed and centrally heated. It is ideal for couples or families. The garden affords relaxed private exterior space. The centre of the village and all its facilities are 5 minutes walk away. The cottage is equally well placed for golfers and cyclists. For golfers, there are several quality 18 holes courses within the locality; for cyclists, local cycling from the gite in the lanes around the village is a delight and for the more adventurous, cycle along the special cycle tracks created along the banks of the river Loire which extend for hundreds of kilometers.
The cottage is light and airy, despite its age, thanks to large windows and glazed doors and the open plan layout of the living accommodation. The cottage is an authentic village house with oak beams throughout, adding to the character and charm of this lovely holiday home.

The property is situated in the vllage of Nouzilly, 20km North of the city of Tours. Only 1 hour by TGV train to Paris to watch the 2024 Olympic Games. Nouzilly is a typical French rural village with 1200 inhabitants. The property is in the village, not outside the village, thus all the services of the village are in walking distance (Bar/Restaurant, Baker, Post Office, village store, pharmacy, hairdresser etc etc).
Being a rural location, the property is in a tranquil environment, but being only 20 minutes away from a city centre, you will never feel too remote. Neighouring villages and small towns (within 10km) have more services, restaurants, supermarkets, petrol stations etc. There is a small market in the village centre of Nouzilly every Saturday morning.
The coast is accessible using a new motorway to Nantes and onto the West Coast of France - allow about two and a half hours for this.
The Loire Valley region is known for several significant reasons: the chateaux, which are numerous and worth visiting one or two during your stay; the vineyards which are also numerous and in general offer winetasting (you can also buy wine directly from the owners), the nearest being 15 minutes away but a huge range within an hours' drive; the city of Tours with its cathedral and old medieval quarter, which survived the bombardment of the second world war; the River Loire itself, now a Unesco World Heritage Site, preserving the wildness of the river, France's longest; troglodyte dwellings (cave dwellers) along the river banks and the list goes on. You will not be short of things to do and see.
City Life
The city of Tours is 20 minutes away by car. Parts of the city were rebuilt after the war but a large medieval quarter remains and is a very popular destination with visitors. The city lies between the river Loire to the North and the river Cher to the south and has a fairly compact centre making a day in the city possible without too much walking. The main streeet, rue Nationale, is the principal shopping street but there are many small side streets to be explored. There is a large tourist office in the square opposite the main railway station. There is a tourist 'train' giving city tours which will give you an insight as to what you might do in the city. There are a huge amount of restaurants in Tours to suit all pockets and tastes. The St Gatien Cathedral is very close to the city centre.
Day trips out
There are plenty of attractions in the region no more than an hour away by car, meaning a day trip is possible. These include Futuroscope at Poitiers, Vernise Vert at Coulon, Beauval Zoo, Troglodyte Village of Turquant and the Vannerie at Villaines.
Golf
You have a choice of several golf courses close by; Ardee Golf Club is the nearest, just 15 mins by car from Nouzilly. It is a very attractive 18 hole golf course in the grounds of Chateau Ardree. 9 holes are affected by water which makes it a challenging golf course. Expect to pay 70 euros green fee. Talk to the Gite owner if interested, he is a member there.
Prettiest Villages in France
There are about 150 villages listed as the 'prettiest in France'. 5 of them are close by; Candes St Martin, Crissay sur Cisse, Lavardin, Montresor and Montsereau. Each one is very different.
The chateaux of the Loire Valley
Visiting one or two of the chateaux in the region is a must and all are within an hour of Nouzilly. The chateaux vary enormously in style and size but each has its own character. The best known are Amboise, Azay le Rideau, Chenonceau, Chambord, Chinon, Clos Luce and Langeais.Hot air baloon trips are available enabling you to see the chateaux from a different perspective!
Walking and Cycling
Cycling has a massive following in France and the lanes around Nouzilly afford leisurely cycling through woodland and along countrysdie lanes, often completely devoid of traffic. For the enthusiast, try cycling along the many kilometres along the banks of the Loire river. If cycling is too strenuous, then there are sevearl walking trails around Nouzilly, well marked for the visitor starting from beside the village lake.
Wine Tasting
For wine lovers there are copious vineyards in the locality open to the public to visit and to taste wine. The principal areas are in Vouvray, Chinon and Bourgueil and a little further afield but worth the trip, the Anjou and Saumur vineyards.

How to get to Gîte La Bonnardière
The easiest way to reach the property is by car from any of the channel ports in Northern France. From Calais, by motorway (avoiding Paris) will take about 5 hrs and from Cherbourg, St Malo or Caen, about 3 hours by motorway. The final 12 km to Nouzilly is not on motorway obviously and instructions will be given for the final few kilometers if required. The motorway A28 comes south from Rouen, passing around Le Mans and onto Tours. You will leave the motorway about 30km north of Tours.
Equally you can arrive by train taking the Eurostar from London to Lille and then the TGV express train directly to Tours. You will then need to hire a car to profit from your visit to the Loire Valley.
There are regular flights from England to Tours Airport with Ryanair. The airport is situated on the north side of Tours, so only 15 minutes drive away from the property. You can hire cars at the airport.

We have had a very comfortable week here, despite the heatwave ! The Gite felt like home and is very well equipped (a tray would be a useful addition) which made cooking easy. Thank you ! We also enjoyed sitting in the garden for meals and being able to see the stars. Thank you for the airbed for our younger daughter – it worked really well.
This week, we have visited Chenonceaux, Clos Lucé in Amboise and went further afield with a day out in the Saumur area – first visiting the troglodyte village at Rochmenier and the Fontevraud Abbey (highly recommended). We also had a day in Vendome.
ON our quieter days, we enjoyed woodland walks around Nouzillyand also a short bike ride. The baker is fantastic !
All in all, a very nice week. Thank you for letting us stay.Guest rating:
We really appreciated the cottage as a base to explore the area and found lots of beautiful walks.
The gardens of Château Valmer were definitely a highlight of the holiday.
The cottage is comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen and efficient shower. We were very grateful for the fans when the weather became hot.
The bed was comfortable and the sofas too for sitting out at the end of the day.
We had one visit from the black cat and a tabby passed by sveral times.
Thank you Patrick for your help when the TV went on the blink ! Much appreciated.Guest rating:
Whilst France battles alongside the rest of the world with Covid-19, two brave English explorers from Herefordshire found their way to Nouzilly and to this Gite. It has everything you want to make this your home – and we certainly managed to relax amongst the transquility of this village. With its lake, woodland walks and bakery/butchers, it has much to recommend. As it located easily for Châteaux east or west along the Loire, the Gite is also well placed – every historic place so different. Thank you Patrick for your welcome, and ease of booking – we shall sing its praises ( even though we will now have to isolate for 14 days on our return !)

We have had a wonderful week in the Loire and it was lovely to visit an area that we last visited in 1981. We enjoyed visiting Vouvray for some wine tasting and have bought our Christmas wine (if it lasts that long !). The local lake was perfect for strolling round and having a couple of picnics with all the fresh produce that is available.
We love this house and rate it as one of the best we have stayed in – so clean and spacious, not forgetting the amazing garden. Thank you Patrick for providing everything we needed (including the sparkling wine).Guest rating:
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in this part of the Loire Valley. We found the Gite to be comfortable, spacious and very well equipped. We enjoyed many visits to different places in the area – none of which were far away. The most memorable for us were the Châteaux – Blois and Azay le Rideau. We also enjoyed the village and the walk to the Lake. Such a peaceful location. Thank you.

Weather could have been better, but had a good time. We would particularly recommend; Chateau de Langeais The 'Secret garden' at Azay le Rideau Walks around the lake and in the woods at Nouzilly Blois; riverside and eglise St Nicolas Pear and chocolate tarts from the baker in the villageGuest rating:
Smooth and efficientbooking procedure, good to have personal e mail contact, all enquiries answered, no matter how daft! Warm welcome from our host made it easy to feel at home.Had an extremely pleasant week in a comfortable Giteset in lovely surrounding. Cycled a bit, walked a bit, 'touristy' rides out in the car. All in all, a great base in which to suit yourselves and do as much or as little as ou like.

We have enjoyed our stay in Nouzilly. The butcher, bakery and bar are very welcoming - do try them. The cottage is a lovely place to come home to after a day exploring. The village is central to a lot of interesting places. We even managed a day sat in the peaceful garden. A gem of a place!

We spent a lot of time seeking out good quality and comfy self-catering accommodation and this Gite seemed to fit the bill. Comunication with the owner was very good; queries clarified almost by return e-mail and we were sent a very informative and useful pack. Our booking included a discount code for our ferry crossing. We were met on arrival by Patrick (owner) and given a very friendly and welcome comprehensive guide around the Gite. The owner lives just a few miles away and left a phone number just in case we needed advice or whatever. The Gite has off-street parking. The Gite is is a traditional cottage, in a traditional French village and a homely in every sense of the word; its furnished with quality in mind, very comfortable, cosy and relaxing. The Gite was beautifully presented and very clean. If I am to suggest anything then the addition of Wi-Fi would be the icing on the cake, as there is no internet in the village. The two upstairs bedrooms are very comfy although we used only one. The bed was really comfortable (no saggy mattress here). Again quality furnishings and appointments, open roof beams add to the experience. The loft has been converted at some point in time from a store/workshop into bedrooms so lower ceilings are a feature. The kitchen is good sized and well appointed. Everything you'll need for food preparation and cooking. The garden is superb and you can catch the sun somewhere in it at any time of the day. Garden furniture is supplied for relaxation or for taking breakfast outdoors if you wish.Nouzilly itself is a small traditional rural French village, its sleepy and quaint with friendly people, lovely old church, a bakery with smashing fresh bread and cakes. It also carries some groceries (but not a lot) There is also a very good butcher, a friendly bar with small restaurant and a community park with walks and a lake...with big fish! A most enjoyable pleasant stay - homely, comfortable and clean, we would book again and recommend it to our friends. The Gite is ideally placed for touring the Loire Region, there's lots of tourist info in the Gite. This was out first visit to France, it won't be our last.

We have had a lovely relaxing stay in your lovely Gîte. All facilities in the house are good, we found everything we needed and the garden is a very peaceful place to relax after we have been out for the day. Even though we have been to the area before, we enjoyed revisiting Blois and Amboise, and discovering Tours for the first time.
Thank you for the use of the bikes.
