Modern, Spacious and Comfortably Furnished Villa with Heated Pool and Wi-Fi
Modern 2 double, 1 twin bedroom, 2 bathroom house with private heated pool (open May to September inclusive) set in the peaceful outskirts of the pretty medieval town of Fontenay-le-Comte. Fridge-freezer, hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, Wi-Fi, TV, DVD and CD. 2 sofa beds for additional guests.
Overlooking the valley of the Vendee river, it is a pleasant 10 minute walk to town with a good choice of bars and restaurants. A hypermarket is a convenient 5 minutes away. The property is ideally situated to explore the sights of the area: 3 hours from St Malo (port) and 40 minutes to La Rochelle (airport and coast). Local attractions include the Mervent forest for walking and cycling, the waterways of the Marais Poitevin (both 20 minutes), and further afield, Futurescope and Puy du Fou.
This modern, spacious and comfortably furnished house accommodates 9 people with ease and comprises:
- Two double-bedrooms (one en-suite)
- One twin-bedroom
- Additional beds: There are also two sofa-beds which can be converted to comfortable double beds, a fold-up bed and a cot available.
Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor which also has a shower room with a hand basin and vanity unit, and a separate WC. The third bedroom with en-suite bathroom is on the first floor, which also features a small balcony with a lovely view over the valley, and on to the town. Duvets, pillows and bed linen are provided, and we hire out towels.
- A fully fitted kitchen with oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, ample crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils.
- A separate dining area with a large dining table to seat 8+
- A main living area with TV, DVD and CD player.
- A sitting room area which benefits from having a fire place with wood-burner to provide additional heating off-season, although the house is electrically heated.
This accommodation is set on the ground floor in a semi open plan arrangement.
There is a large basement area under the house which incorporates a garage with parking for two cars, as well as a washing machine and a table-tennis table.
Outside
There is a small patio to the front of the property which overlooks the valley. To the rear of the house is a larger south-facing patio with a heated, private 11m x 4 m pool (open May to September inclusive) patio furniture and a BBQ.
The house is set in two thirds of an acre of garden, mainly laid to lawn.
We have a strict no smoking rule in the house, and we are sorry, but pets are not allowed.
A high chair is available. A table tennis table is available for use.
It is a pleasant 10 minute walk into Fontenay le Comte, which is a bustling town with a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants. There is a hypermarket within 5 minutes drive from the house, and another a short drive across town. The oldest part of town is charming and beautifully lit at night.
Fontenay is ideally placed to enable you to enjoy the nearby coast or countryside. A 20 minute drive takes you to the Mervent forest with walks, cycle tracks and a lake with boats for hire in season.
Within 30 minutes to one hour’s drive there are various pretty towns and villages, all with something to offer the visitor. One example is Vouvant. This picturesque village on a bend in the River Vendee is known for its artists and there are beautiful walks around the walls of it’s ruined castle.
From Fontenay head towards the coast and La Rochelle and you find yourself in the Marais Poitevin. This is an area of quiet waterways where you can take boat trips or hire boats. Again, walking, cycling and fishing are all available.
La Rochelle is always worth a visit with it’s smart shops, atmospheric cafes, bars and restaurants and the beautiful old port. Further afield there is Les Sables D’Olonne, which is a larger coastal resort with long sandy beaches.
There are a variety of gardens, chateaux, abbeys, tourist attractions and museums in the area, and you can go to the Vendee tourism website at www.vendee-tourisme.com for more information.
For grander days out Le Puy du Fou (www.puydufou.com) or Futuroscope at Poitiers (www.futuroscope.com) are easily accessible.
There are three very pleasant local wines; Pissotte, Mareuil and Vix, all with accessible vineyards which are only a short drive from Fontenay.
For those interested in golf, there are courses at La Rochelle, Niort, Maziere-en-Gatine and near Roche-sur-Yonne, all of which are between 35 minutes and 1 hour away.
There are plenty of activities for all to enjoy within the vicinity. For details of any of the activities listed, please ask.

This villa is perfect -well equipped and the pool is certainly an added bonus- There is everything you need from the kitchen equipment to the BBQ and the table tennis table - we all enjoyed it so much so spent most of our time at the villa- watching the sunset from the front porch is so lovely. Its also great to be able to walk to the town in ten minutes- Hyper U and Aldi also in walking distance but saying that the villa is on a very quiet road so you wouldn’t think everything is so close at hand. Would definitely recommend this property as perfect for a lovely family holiday.Guest rating:
Everything you could want from a home away from home. The pool was terrific and our 6 year old granddaughter was in it every day. Us adults also enjoyed the pool. A trip to the Marais for boating, and a visit to La Rochelle and ile de re are a must. Thank you Chas and Marina.
An extremely well equipped villa with lots of space.Guest rating:
Our stay at Chas & Marinas house was truly superb. We have stayed in gites all over the region for many years and can honestly say that this house is a credit to the owners. The location is brilliant with it being central to places such as La Rochelle, O’Gliss water park (a must for a visit) Poitiers, Valley De Singes (monkey park) and great towns like Marans and even Fontenay-le-Comte for river walk or bike rides. The house is well equipped and wants for nothing. Many thanks Chas & Marina! A+++
Guest rating:
This was the best equipped accommodation we have ever stayed in - a bit like staying in someone's home. Area is also great for getting out and about by car or bike and Fontenay is an interesting, bustling town. Probably didn't use the pool as much as other places due to sun cream rules but it was great when we did. Brought our own fan which was useful in the upstairs bedroom. Would visit again thank you.
Guest rating:
Wonderful villa that has everything you could possibly require to have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The views were beautiful from the property. The neighbours were lovely giving us fresh produce. They didn’t speak English and we were rusty with our french but managed to understand each other. The town is within walking distance and the chateau in the town is a must to visit, have a guided tour.
We would definitely recommend this property.Guest rating:
We have just returned from this lovely villa. We have stayed in a number of properties in France and this ranks as one of the very best. The house provides everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. It’s clean and spacious and the heated pool very refreshing after a hard day sightseeing. We particularly enjoyed watching the birds in the extensive gardens, eating a variety of delicious cherries straight from the trees and watching the spectacular sunsets in the evening. There are good supermarkets and boulangeries nearby and the whole area is interesting to explore. A great place to stay and thoroughly recommended.Guest rating:
This was everything we hoped for and more. The house is on a rise with lovely views of the town in the day and wonderful sunsets over the hills opposite. Being walking distance to both supermarkets and the town, we didn't have to use our car as much as we thought, except to carry back all we bought at the great Saturday market. The pool and garden were great with cherries ripe for picking. The neighbours were the bonus - friendly and helpful. A definite for a return visit. Thanks Chas and Marina.

Our second time staying at this lovely villa. This time we were 4 adults, a 15 year old and a 11year old.. The house gave us more than enough room for us all and the pool was a delight. Walking to get pastries in the morning was great and the close proximity to Fontenay was very convenient. The villa is everything you could want and more, spotlessly clean with plenty of glasses, plates etc. The villa is in the perfect place to explore this lovely part of the Vendee.

Our second visit even more perfect than our first!
Grandparents, parents and 7 yr old can't wait to return. We had an extremely hot 2 weeks, temperatures 35+ so spent hours in the beautiful pool. Huge basement was perfect for storing our bikes, easy cycling along the river and elsewhere. This region has many safe, quiet cycleways, lovely countryside, and pretty villages all around. As others say, the house is roomy, superbly equipped, comfortable beds, all facilities for a perfect stay. Charles answers any queries immediately. Highly recommend!Guest rating:
This house was perfect for our needs (grandparents, parents and 3 year old). Well equipped and nicely furnished in a delightful location. The pool was excellent especially as it was treated with a solution that didn't aggravate my husbands sensitive eyes and was so warm! A good selection of boulangeries within walking distance for our morning croissants and hyper markets close by. All in all a good location and property for the coast and beautiful surrounding countryside. Will be back!
Guest rating:
A better equipped house than my own, swallowed 6 adults with ease and the wonderfully warm pool was the icing on the cake. Quiet, relaxing area with friendly neighbours with an easy walkby the river town for rations, meals and coffee. Sunset Evenings sat overlooking the lit Fontenay church a pleasure. Close to the Venice Vert for canal trips, villages, sunflowers and markets. An evening in La Rochelle saw a spectacular sunset over the Towers. A well thought out and cared for holiday villa
Guest rating:
We stayed in the house for three weeks and had a fantastic holiday. The house is in a quiet area, and is well appointed, with everything you could want or need. The neighbours are friendly and very helpful. The heated pool was a real bonus and was used a great deal, even on days that were a bit cooler. The house is very handy for supermarkets etc and a short walk takes you to the town centre, with its history. All communication with Charles was helpful and emails were returned quickly.

This is an excellent holiday rental, superbly equipped and very spacious. Our 3 boys had a great time in the pool and we ate out on the patio every evening. The location is also ideal - you have the convenience of being on the doorstep of a reasonable sized town (supermarkets/shops etc) while at the same time feeling that you are in a rural location. It would have been very easy to spend longer there!

"Grandparents, mum & dad and 5 year old Lucy all had the most fabulous two weeks here and have booked a return. The spacious house has jus teverything one could ever need. The pool is a great size, warm and with no horrible chemicals. We all had such fun in it every day. Walks along the river and into Fontenay were so enjoyable, watching a family of kingfishers and hundreds of swallows. Trips to Coulon (boat hire) Vouvant, the vineyard at Pissotte, La Rochelle and the coast. Absolutely all 1st class"

This is a truly lovely villa. It has everything that you could possibly want and more. The rooms are large, spacious and airey. The pool is just the right temperature and was used alot during our week there where temperatures reached 33 degrees. The villa is clean and well cared for and was wonderfully cool due to the shutters being closed when we arrived. Fontenay le Comte is only a few minutes away by car or indeed by cycle. It has a variety of good restaurants and an excellent Patisserie! We hired bicyles from Go Go Bikes who conveniently delivered and collected them from the doorstep. There are many cycle ways just minutes from the villa that suit all abilities. The surrounding area is beautiful and easily accessible and we look forward to visiting again.Guest rating:
This villa has everything you could possibly need to make your holiday perfect, we highly recommend it. My husband and I loved it so much, in fact, that we've already planned our return visit for next year, and we've only been home 3 days! It offers a great base to get out and sample some real French culture and to try out your language skills - and let's face it, that's always fun! The local bars and restaurants in Fontenay are a good place to start and are a mere stroll from the house. So too, is the Hyper U Supermarket and fuel station, a McDonald’s (if you must!) and more importantly, a Boulangerie for the warm, fresh croissants in the morning. There’s a good shopping centre and daily market in Niort, abt 20 mins by car, and La Rochelle in the opposite direction, is well worth a visit too. The house itself is extremely comfortable and very well equipped - TV (Sky News), wifi etc.The pool is clean, warm and enticing and you’ll find a few floatables in the basement beside the ping-pong table. Finally, whilst the view from the balcony across the Vendee is undoubtedly beautiful - on a clear night the view of the stars is simply stunning! This holiday let demonstrates the advantage of booking a property which is the holiday home of the owner. Many French villa/gites are small converted buildings somewhere in the grounds and the owners have the large primary property and you share the pool with them. Here you are in the primary property which is a modern spacious well designed home. The heated pool ensures comfortable swimming and the views over Fontenay are excellent. We can recommend La Rabelais nearby for an excellent meal.Guest rating:
We have stayed at a number of villas in France over the years but this is one of the best. The weather was not kind to us but that deter us from getting into the lovely heated pool. Everything you could need was catered for at the villa. The grandchildren and parents enjoyed a day out at Pierre Brunne a mere 15 minute drive. We hope to be back next year.Guest rating:
We had a fantastic week. The house is beautiful and equipped with everything we could want. The photos on the website do not do it justice.

We had a fantastic week. A lovely well equipped villa, would definitely recommend.

The house is excellent - we were 8 people (including 4 older teenagers) but did not feel short of space at all. Furnishings and equipment also great (photos do not do it justice!). Definitely amongst the best we have stayed in in over 15 years of self-catering in France and Italy.
Guest rating:
We had a brilliant time. The house was superb - excellent for a family. The children loved the pool. The area is great with lots of things to do. Thanks for a great place to stay

We had a lovely time here. The house is fabulous - spacious and very relaxing and tastefully decorated. We had everything we needed. We are looking forward to coming back again!
Guest rating:
Our stay in your house was wonderful; the weather was fantastic; it's location is perfect (easy walking distance into the town, while still quiet in it's immediate surroundings), and the house itself is lovely. A perfect combination and we would recommend your property highly.
