Gaujac is a tranquil village in the Gard Provencal, 20 minutes from Uzes and around 30 minutes from Nimes, Avignon, Orange, Chateauneuf du Pape, the Pont du Gard and more.
The village itself boasts a chateau, 2 wineries which welcome you for tastings, a Michelin listed restaurant and a bar/café. It has a weekly market where local cheeses, fruits vegetables and meat can be purchased. All of these are within 5 minutes walk of The Bijou. Just outside of the village there is a second gastronomic restaurant and more cafes.
Gaujac is surrounded by vineyards, orchards of apricots, peaches and olive trees.
Walkers are well catered for by a myriad of marked paths leading to the local villages or to Roman ruins. Within a couple of kilometers there is the possibility to do horse riding, canoeing, hot air ballooning and more.
The area is a paradise for wine lovers, Languedoc-Roussillon being the largest wine producing region of France. There are some excellent local wines, but also, Chateauneuf du Pape, Tavel and Lirac are a short drive away on the quiet and scenic roads.
Foodies will also be delighted by the specialities (and bio food) to be found at the many markets and farm shops. Uzes market, held twice a week is one of the most popular in the South of France.
It is also a great region for culture with music festivals, dance and art in many local villages as well as large events, for example, in Orange, Nimes and Montpellier. Crafts abound, with Saint Quentin La Poterie being the centre for ceramics. You can browse the boutiques and workshops, even have a short course to try your hand.
Close by are four of the most beautiful villages of France (Aigueze, Lussan, La Roque sur Ceze, Montclus). There is also the stunning Castillon du Gard, romantic setting of the channel four programme 'First dates hotel'.
The Roman heritage of the region is to be found all around. The Arenas and amphiteatres of Nimes and Orange are the best preserved in the world, but the most amazing sight is the Pont du Gard, an aqueduct built 2000 years ago to carry water from Uzes to Nimes. It is the second most photographed sight in France, exceeded only by the Eiffel tower. The light, firework and music spectacles set in the river valley, beneath the aqueduct are quite an experience.
For those wanting more strenuous pursuits, cycles can be hired in many places and there is kayaking on many local rivers.
For less physical activities, why not stay at the Bijou, swim in the pool, take the sun, enjoy the garden and spectacular views and maybe have a game of petanque or boules on our own petanque court in the shade of the 300 year old oak! Should you wish to enjoy a massage or a pedi/manicure, it can be arranged for you.

The villa is very well presented and equipped with everything that you could need for a self catering holiday. There is a beautiful south facing garden and swimming pool, the perfect place for sunbathing and relaxing. Robert and Marie are excellent hosts and provide advice on the best places to visit, and due to its location there are plenty of places within a one hour drive. La Maison restaurant is less than a 10 minute walk, and is definitely worth a visit for an evening meal. We very much look forward to a return visit to the Bijou.Guest rating:
Julie, Ian, Thomas and Ffi has the most wonderful week at The Bijou for the 7 days prior to the August bank holiday. The villa was fantastic and far out wade our expectations, everything anyone would want, it had. Robert and Marie, we fantastic hosts, nothing was too much trouble from advising on the best local wine to removing a ‘live’ animal from the pool. The villa was of a very high standard, great bathrooms, cool bedrooms, a relaxing lounge area with ‘British’ TV (could watch the cricket) and a fully fitted kitchen, with all that you would want, even coffee capsules were supplied. The swimming pool was beautiful, cool, refreshing and large enough for 4 people to actually swim in and throw a ball around. The surrounding area is well worth visiting – a leisurely drive through the gorges to Vallon-Pont-D’Arc to visiting the Haribo shop, a lovely meal in Uzes and a late nigh light show at Pont du Gard. There is so much to do. We had such a great time that we have already booked for 2024 and already looking forward to it. Thank you very much Robert and Marie.

Having read all the amazing reviews below, the Bijou was never likely the live up to our expectations... but it did...and then some...! A stunning property with a sun trap of a garden and pool, ample parking in a idyllic village with a superb Michelin Bib Gourmand listed restaurant, a friendly bar/pizzeria, a supermarket and (at least (that we visited) two) vineyards ALL within a 15 minute stroll of the Bijou We didn't really need to leave the village for anything other than to explore and when we did, the pink flamingos of the Camargue National Park, the pink salt flats at Salin d’Aigues-Mortes the Mediterranean Sea were all within a 90 minute drive. Our hosts Marie and Robert could not do enough to make us feel welcome when we arrived and all throughout our stay. They live next door which is handy if there are any issues or problems (of which we had none) and were there to call on for advice or tap into their extensive local knowledge. Robert is something of a Sommelier, has studied and enjoys wine and not only was a great reference when deciding upon a local tipple he also accompanied us to the vineyards for tastings to help with translation and apply his expertise on the subject. A perfect week, Recommend wholeheartedly.Guest rating:
We stayed at this beautiful villa for 8 days in May 2023. This is definitely a five star Villa with all amenities provided down to the smallest detail. Very clean, well presented, amazing views, beautiful garden and surroundings and exquisite furnishings. The Villa itself is spacious with loads of outside space and a great swimming pool. The owners are very helpful in providing loads of up to date information on Markets, Wineries and Restaurants and areas to visit. We highly recommend the restaurant in the village called La Maison which usually needs to be booked in advance. There are many historical Roman ruins to visit in the area and some beautiful villages. Robert provides a helpful list of the best places to visit. We really enjoyed our holiday and are thankful to Robert and Marie for their hospitality and help in making sure all their guests have an enjoyable stay at The Bijou. We highly recommend The Bijou and will return next year !Guest rating:
We had a wonderful stay at the Bijou for 2 weeks. The owners were really welcoming and helpful throughout our stay when we needed them. The Bijou was really well equipped and had everything we needed. There are some beautiful villages in the area and the town of Uzes nearby had great little shops and cafes. There are lots of local vineyards and wine producers so need to go far to get some great wines. We had a really relaxing time and having the pool was great to cool down on a hot day. Would highly recommend the BijouGuest rating:
We stayed here as a family in aug ‘22 and everything about it is amazing! No expense spared, the hosts (Robert and Marie) couldn’t do enough for us. A great welcome, wine and sorbet and lots of great advice on where to visit during our stay The villa is a great location, amazingly furnished, supermarket 1 min drive and central for key sightseeing! Played boule, relaxed on loungers, swam and enjoyed Raj the cat! I’ve stayed in villas in France for many years and this is the best. Would definitely recommend and would definitely return. Thank you both for a great holiday.Guest rating:
This was our second stay at the Bijou for a week in early July and once again, it didn’t disappoint. The changes Bob and Marie have made to the pool and kitchen were great. The gite is beautiful and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The garden is stunning and is beautifully cared for. Bob and Marie are perfect hosts and make you feel very welcome. There is lots to see and do in the area and Bob is great at making recommendations on places to visit. Highly recommend!Guest rating:
What an amazing villa. So comfortable, clean and perfectly equipped. Such fabulous hosts. The little personal touches make such a difference. We had a lovely relaxing holiday thank you Robert and Marie. We are really looking forward to returning in September. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this 5 star property. The area is lovely too and Robert and Marie provided lots of information on places to visit.Guest rating:
The Bijou is an amazing property with a beautiful garden and pool with open views to distant hills. Robert and Marie are delightful hosts and so generous with their time and advice, In the rear garden, a 300 year old oak tree provides perfect shade for evening dinning So many delightful places to visit, highly recommend Carrieres Des Lumieres at Le Baux de Provence and not to be missed, evening dinner at La Maison in the village. Thank you Robert and Marie for making our holiday so memorableGuest rating:
Reading the visitors book at the end of our two weeks at the Bijou made us smile, it echoed everything we had experienced during our holiday. What more can we say, superb hospitality, made us feel we were with lifetime friends, 5 star quality, well equipped accommodation, beautiful, scenic gardens & terraces with a lovely swimming pool, a haven of peace & tranquillity while being close many picaresque market towns & villages Many thanks Robert & Marie, I’m sure we will be returning to Le Bijou’Guest rating:
We had a super time staying at Bob and Marie's villa for 24 nights and we'd have happily stayed longer. It's a quality property with really lovely owners and a beautiful garden, I would highly recommend it ( unless of course you're thinking of booking the same dates as us, in which case it's one star, avoid! ). We have been taking holidays in this general Uzes area for many years and always find new things to entertain us, most of which seem to involve ice cream and red wine. So on that subject take a pleasant 30 minute drive north, down the back lanes to Goudargues and search out 'Glaces et Delices', it's ice cream heaven! And on the wine front Bob very kindly provided some sample bottles from local vineyards to get us in the spirit of things. Cheers Bob!. The Gaujac coop also produces a very drinkable red for less than 4 euro and even has it available via a petrol style pump, next time we'll bring a 10 gallon tank! We look forward to returning.Guest rating:
The Bijou is beautifully presented inside and out. The property is very well equipped with it’s amazing swimming pool, stunning garden and view. There are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to explore in this region and nearby Uzès is very pretty with lots of small shops, cafes and restaurants ,it also has a great market twice a week. La Maison restaurant in Gaujac is definitely worth booking, our meal was absolutely delicious offering excellent value for money, and is only a short walk from the property. We do still stay at other villas in France during the year, and I can safely say this is up there with the best, we are already planning our 3rd return visit to The Bijou, we just love this place!Guest rating:
Thank you to Robert and Marie for enabling us to have a wonderful holiday in a lovely villa. They really have thought of everything and the accommodation is of a very high standard with lots of things to see and do within the local area.Guest rating:
The Bijou is a stunning property, set in a wonderful location within easy access of some wonderful charming and typically French villages and towns. This is the real France we are all looking for! It is close to the famous Pont du Gard bridge, within easy reach of Provence and around an hour from Montpellier airport. It has some of the finest wines that France has to offer within a few miles of the property. The house is immaculate and whilst the accommodation is joined to the owners house we found this to be only ever to our advantage with local knowledge and knowhow on hand whenever needed otherwise we were entirely left alone to enjoy the place. The pool is lovely and generous in size, the garden beautifully attended and the kitchen/living accommodation a real gem - comfy beds, en suite facilities with both bedrooms, a very comfortable lounge with giant TV and access to multiple stations including the UK (if required). Outside there a sun loungers and various terraces and eating locations which are all perfect! Robert and Marie are wonderful hosts - thoughtful in every respect and generous with their time and advice when needed. Robert is a wine expert too so if you are looking for the perfect wine at a bargain price then he is your man! By the way, there is a proper Petanque court in the garden. If you want to see how the game is really played ask Robert - he plays in a local league!
I would rate this property 5 out of 5!
We will return some day if we get the chance!Guest rating:
We had the pleasure of staying at the Bijou for a week in mid July and we have to say it far exceeded our expectations. The gite itself is beautiful and everything you need for a wonderful stay is provided for. The owners, Robert and Marie, have done a fantastic job of creating a comfortable, stylish home from home with a garden that is simply stunning. The gite is located in the sleepy village of Gaujac, which boasts an excellent Michelin star restaurant which we can definitely recommend. There are lots of places nearby that are well worth a visit just a short drive away. We enjoyed our time at the Bijou so much, we're already planning our next visit.Guest rating:
Thank you so much Robert and Marie for sharing your beautiful gîte with us, you were the kindest hosts and most generous with your time and advice. The property is a delight the gardens and surroundings are peaceful and private and the location perfect – there is so much to see within a short car ride in virtually any direction. There are many pretty towns in the area but we realy loved Uzes – a perfect provincial French town with a proper Place with a fountain and shade trees. We also learned something of the local wines and are now the proud owners of a wine aerator (ask Robert).Guest rating:
Perfect hosts Robert & Marie helped make this a memorable stay. Fantastic area with interests for all. Easy travel down to the Camargue and surrounding countryside - perfect for me as a keen wildlife photographer. Lots of other great areas of interest around and the local wines are exceptionally good value. Lovely pool ready on your return every day. Two brilliant weeks. Exceptional!Guest rating:
Just returned home from the Bijou having enjoyed a wonderful holiday with my wife and daughters. The villa is nestled in the hillside and enjoys spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The Bijou is furnished to a very high standard and the gardens and pool area are superb. Robert and Marie gave us a lovely warm welcome and were always more than happy to point us in the direction of a market, town, restaurant etc which enabled us to make the most of the time we had. Pont du gard, Pont d'arc and la roque-sur-ceze are all within striking distance. We really enjoyed the market towns of Laudun and Uzes along with the beautiful city of Avignon, again all within 30 mins of the Bijou. Thanks for a lovely holiday and I hope the opportunity comes for us to visit again, Simon Cath and the girls.Guest rating:
We have just returned from Le Bijou, having spent two glorious weeks there. The house is very, very comfortable and in a most beautiful place with views to die for!! The surrounding gardens are very pretty providing differing areas for relaxation and recreation. The location is ideal, providing easy access to many interesting places to visit as well as a good variety of restaurants and vineyards. Robert and Marie made us instantly welcome upon our arrival and were most helpful with their recommendations of places not to be missed, places to eat, local events and markets etc. This ensured that we relaxed from day one and were able to make the most of our holiday. We have no hesitation in recommending ‘Le Bijou’, it is certainly perfect in every way and we look forward to a return visit to what felt like “home from home”. Thank you Robert, Marie (and the cats!) for making our holiday so memorable.Guest rating:
Just returned from The Bijou which is a delightful property in a lovely setting with stunning views from the garden. It is a very peaceful spot and Robert and Marie were superb hosts who made sure that we had everything we needed. They provided us with information about the area which was very useful. There are lots of nice places to visit within the locality and a superb restaurant within walking distance of the villa. This is a great area for wine lovers as well. I'm sure that, at some time in the future, we will return. Thank you Robert and Marie.Guest rating:
We had a great week at the Bijou in the care of Robert and Marie. They were exceptionally helpful from start to finish, and gave us loads of great ideas and inspiration for places to visit. The Bijou itself was exceptionally comfortable and well appointed, and the front and back gardens (complete with cats!) were well maintained and gave us lots of relaxation options, from petanque under the shade of the oak tree, to basking next to the large swimming pool. We'd certainly recommend it to anyone as a great place to stay, and as a great staging post to visit a huge variety of different sights.Guest rating:
What a wonderful time we have had in this very special property 'The Bijou'! The owners Marie and Robert gave us such a warm welcome, as did the glorious early autumn weather. The gite was immaculate, so comfortable with everything we needed. Having alfresco breakfast watching the sunrise illuminate the surrounding hills was only surpassed by sitting, bathed in the evening sunshine, supping the delicious local wine left for us by Robert. It was perfect. This has been a super area to explore, in every direction there are pretty villages, many with their own wine caves for sampling. We particularly enjoyed the lovely walled city of Avignon and the stunning Roman attraction of the Pont du Gard. We can highly recommend this property, and we are already looking forward to our return. This is a special place with very special hosts and we do so hope others enjoy it as much as we have.Guest rating:
