This delightful stone farmhouse offers perfect family accommodation. The house has four bedrooms, two bathrooms plus a further shower room/wc, large kitchen/dining room, and sitting room. There is a large shaded outdoor area for dining and relaxing, and a purpose-built barbecue.
There is a large, heated swimming pool for the exclusive use of this house. The pool opens on 1 May and the water heating is available during May, June, September and October. The pool closes on 31 October.
There is fibre broadband to the house which provides very fast and reliable internet access and cable TV. There is also UK satellite TV.
Parking for 3 - 4 cars.
Ground Floor
The front door leads into a small hallway, with an adjacent store room which is kept closed during lets. From the hall, a glazed connecting door leads into:
- The large (8 x 4 metres) open plan kitchen/dining room in space that has been converted from an original barn. The massive roof beams have been retained, as has the original barn opening, now with fully double-glazed French windows, which provides access out to the patio.
- The kitchen is equipped to a very high standard with electric oven; gas hob; microwave; dishwasher; and a large American – style fridge-freezer which has an ice cube dispenser, chilled filtered water dispenser, and a bar. There is a hi-fi with CD player; internet and FM radios; an i-pod connector; and ceiling-mounted loudspeakers.
Behind the kitchen there is;
- A small utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, and iron and ironing board. Next to the utility room is:
- A shower room with wash basin, WC, and shower.
- The dining area has a large antique dining table that extends to seat 12 people in comfort. The huge French windows provide lovely views up the garden, and direct access to an outdoor dining area with pergola, built-in barbecue, and a shady Mulberry tree. Whilst the kitchen and utility room have tiled floors, the dining area and rest of the ground floor have a wooden floor, which is kinder for small children to play on.
From the dining area, there is a connecting door to:
- The sitting room (5.8 x 3.8 metres) with sofa, armchairs, fireplace with wood burning stove, satellite TV/radio and video/DVD. (French and UK free-to-air TV channels are available). This room provides a very cosy sitting area. It retains many period features, including massive roof beams and stone-faced wall. It is fully double-glazed, and also has double French doors giving access to the patio with its shady pergola. At the rear of the sitting room is a large walk-in storage cupboard, where we keep a cot and high chair (on request) for our younger guests, together with various games and toys which all are welcome to use.
From the sitting room, there is a connecting door to:
- A rear lobby providing access to Bedroom 1, the staircase, and the back garden door.
- Bedroom 1 is a large double bedroom (3.8 x 3.6 metres) with en-suite facilities (WC, wash basin, and walk-in shower area within a stunning aquamarine glass enclosure), and overlooks the small, secluded, side garden. It has original massive wood beams and a wooden floor. It has a king-size bed, an antique chest of drawers with marble top, and a built-in wardrobe in an alcove.
First Floor
There is a straight flight of wide stairs to the first floor, which contains three further bedrooms and a bathroom.
- Bedroom 2 is a very large room with a king-size double bed, chest of drawers, and wardrobe – plus additional cupboards.
- Bedroom 3 is a smaller room with two full-size bunk beds and its own wash basin. Whilst these beds are full size, and so could be used by adults, this room is better suited to children. There is limited headroom above the top bunk which is not a problem for a child, but which an adult might find limiting. There is a small chest of drawers and hanging rail.
- Bedroom 4 has two full-size single beds, a chest of drawers, and wardrobe.
- The upstairs bathroom has a bath with dedicated shower area; WC; and a wash basin set into a large mosaic tiled surface. This room was completely renovated very recently, with new wooden floor, double-glazed window, and radiator. It has possibly the best views in the house, overlooking the vineyards to the side of the house, with not another property in sight.
Garden
The grounds are about a ¼ acre, with large swimming pool (12 x 5 metres) for the exclusive use of guests, fully fenced off in compliance with French law. A heat pump is now installed to provide comfortable swimming in Spring and Autumn.
The rest of the garden comprises an olive grove, ancient well (covered and gated), and raised beds separated by river gravel. There are views to open country to the west, and over vineyards to the north. The property is fully fenced with gates that can be closed to allow small children to run around freely, although our lane is not a through road and so has very little traffic.
Mas des Costes is situated in the quiet rural community of Tornac. about sabout 10 minutes' drive from Anduze, our local market town. All the attractions of Provence, Nîmes, Montpellier and the Mediterranean beaches in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of the south of France are within one hour’s drive . The Cevennes and Ardeche regions are close by, and we are within easy reach of historic towns such as Avignon, Arles, and Uzes.
Anduze offers shopping, local markets, craft shops, and restaurants. In the surrounding area, there are many local craft centres, vineyards, and museums. From Easter until the end of the summer there is a steam train which runs from Anduze up the beautiful Gardon valley to St. Jean du Gard.
Anduze is the point where the foothills of the Cevennes meet the Languedoc plain. It is, therefore, the ideal base for walking in the magnificent Cevennes National Park using the numerous waymarked trails where you can walk for miles without seeing another hiker. Alternatively, it is possible to explore this wild region by car along the Corniche des Cevennes, visiting pretty mountain villages such as Florac, or the dramatic Gorges du Tarn. Robert Louis Stevenson traveled here and wrote about this region in ‘Travels with a Donkey’. (It is possible to retrace Stevenson’s steps, using donkeys to carry your luggage). The Cevennes has been designated a site of world environmental importance by UNESCO.
The Mediterranean coast is within one hour’s drive. The nearest resort is Le Grau du Roi which has long sandy beaches, and a lively old fishing port with excellent fish restaurants overlooking the water.
Nearby are the provençal towns of Avignon, Arles, and Nîmes. They are important centres for arts festivals and concerts throughout the summer months, possess splendid galleries, museums, and restaurants, and have some of the best preserved Roman buildings remaining anywhere. The Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard is also nearby.
Further afield, the Ardèche valley and the Camargue National Park are easily within a day’s expedition. The Camargue offers opportunities to explore the nature reserves with their flamingos, bulls, and white horses. The Rhône delta has miles of fine sandy beaches.

We were lucky enough to win a charity auction kindly donated by the owner Malcolm. Unfortunately Covid hit but our reservation remained valid until we were able to travel. The pre travel information provided was excellent and although the villa is in a quiet rural location, it was easy to find and access. The villa itself is well appointed with all the necessary comforts including wifi which my teenage daughters considered essential! It is spacious and comfortable with well appointed bedrooms. The pool was superb and became the family hub. We enjoyed our stay so much we rebooked. Again a lovely stay, just a very easy place to relax and unwind. The second time I took my bicycle and took numerous routes to the local towns and beyond. Highly recommended for cyclists. Local shops are a car ride away but there are quality local markets and the town of Anduze has every thing you need, including some very decent restaurants. If you're looking for a place to unwind and relax, go for country walks, explore the nearby towns, this is the place for you. I highly recommended it and would return.

Ideally placed for exploring this fascinating region, Mas des Costes provides all you need for a fantastic holiday in the South of France. The outdoor areas, pool, pergola, outdoor dining, seating and barbecue areas are particularly pleasurable – and the house remains mercifully cool during hot weather. Well done to Malcolm and Liz for providing great communication and the perfect holiday accommodation at a very reasonable price. Don't miss Mas des Costes!Guest rating:
A delightful stone built property which is in an area abundant with beautiful villages, vibrant markets and great walks. Anduze, which is a five minute drive away, provides all you need in terms of shopping, eating out, bars and cafes as well as a great Thursday market. So a lovely area, but what about the house? Its greatest asset is the large kitchen diner leading to an outside dining and sitting area, which is all very convenient for the excellent pool; this all offers great flexibility to deal with heat and/or occasional rain without spoiling your enjoyment. We have stayed twice at the gite this year and look forward to returning soon. Liz and Malcolm have been very helpful to us in dealing with some issues.Guest rating:
Stayed for 3 weeks (partly with children and grandchildren, partly just the two of us). It is an attractive farmhouse with plenty of space for 8 people. Helpful floorplan meant that we knew exactly what we were renting. Well equipped, great swimming pool with steps and deep enough for diving. Although very tastefully decorated, was not "precious" and so didn't feel we needed to worry too much that children would cause damage (which they didn't!). Good communication from owners, and useful book of suggestions in the house. Despite 35degree temperatures, the house stayed cool inside. We particularly loved the shady seating area outside with sofas and beanbags. Less than 10 minutes drive from the attractive market town of Anduze (although no commerces within walking distance). Plenty of restaurants/markets/river-swimming/canoeing/caves all within 20 minutes or so. Would definitely recommend and would be happy to come back.

Unbedingt empfehlenswert!

Property was bigger than expected with a great pool. Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend. Highlights to area were river swimming in nearby Anduze and the young Algerian/French worker in the Fritterie in Lebzen who chased after us to give us a bottle of wine when we left him a big tip.

I have spent many years traveling in France for vacation and work, seen it all I thought until I found Malcolm's lovely house situated in an area in France that I fell in love with. The house is big and well decorated and very fresh with all facilities! You have to see it to believe it! I will come back year after year and never look for anything else!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at Mas de Costas and wish it could have been for longer. We had a very relaxing time - there was plenty of space and everything a family would need both inside and outside - very well equipped and well presented. The large pool and surround were brilliant - allowing us to cool down, sunbathe and exercise at our leisure. The surrounding area is lovely. Anduze the nearest town has some interesting corners and the local countryside is idyllic - great for walking or just admiring. We really look forward to our return!
Guest rating:
The pictures definitely don't do the property justice - it was beautifully restored with lots of space and all the facilities and equipment you could want. Excellent, large pool. The local area is lovely, very pretty and rural and not too touristy. Would definitely recommend canoeing under the Pont du Gard, wandering around Anduze, and visiting the Vignerons du Tornac. Thanks for a fantastic time, from the Atkinsons and Sandums.

Beautiful farmhouse. We took 6 children and had an amazing time. The guidebook was extremely helpful along with the owners always happy to answer questions. Passos the gardener was very friendly, spoke excellent English and he was a big hit with our little boy! We're hoping to return next year. Highly recommended. The Field family.

Highly recommended. We stayed for two weeks with another family and the house was very spacious. With the huge lounge and separate kitchen/diner we never felt on top of one another. There is so much to see and do in the area, with the sea not too far away if you can drag yourself away from the large pool (solar pool shower much appreciated). Canoeing down the Gardon and under the Pont du Gard is a must do. The house came complete with an excellent guide to the surrounding area with plenty of suggestions on where to eat out, vineyards to visit, things to do, walk in the Cevennes etc etc. Mod cons such as ice-maker, UK TV and radio and WiFi are all available if you want to make use of them, alternatively why not do as we did much of the time and just chill out with a bottle of local Tornac rose. We would definitely like to return at some point in the future.

Mas de Costas was a lovely house, well equipped and comfortable, clean and tidy, as described in the property information. The outdoor eating area was excellent with an extended roof providing shade. The pool was in a lovely position and very private. Kitchen and utility room were very well set up, the beds were very comfortable with plenty of storage in the bedrooms. Change of bed linen every week was much appreciated and the pool man was friendly and helpful. It was in an ideal position for visiting local attractions. Anduze is a lovely bustling town with great coffee in the centre and an excellent market. Les Bossens in Sauve was excellent, great food and friendly service. We would recommend the area and the house and would definitely consider returning here in future years.

The online photos don't show how stunningly beautiful both the property, its grounds and the surrounding area are. The property is well laid out with doors opening to the outside area from both the kitchen and lounge area. It is well maintained and extremely comfortable both internally and externally. It is situated in a tranquil spot but it is also close to Anduze with its numerous cafes, market, shops, and river. The information folder covers both Anduze and other places of interest. Having spent 5 days in Nimes we particularly enjoyed sitting, relaxing by the pool and reading some of the many excellent books in the farmhouse. The kitchen and eating areas were so well equipped and provided such an enjoyable eating area we spent most evenings eating in. We had no problems during our stay but were reassured that had there been any all the necessary phone numbers, including the English speaking caretaker and the owner, were to hand. The owner provided excellent customer service and dealt promptly and efficiently with all of our queries.

With some warm days and some chilly ones, this was the perfect place for a relaxing autumn half-term holiday. The outdoor pool was wonderful and the lounge fireplace very cosy. Stunning house with lots of space and all the mod cons you can imagine. A short drive away is the small town of Anduze with good markets and restaurants. There we made an exciting steam train journey into the Cevennes mountain range. This house is highly recommended.

Mas des Costes is a beautiful property, very well maintained and located in a lovely tranquil spot, perfect for exploring the local towns and further afield. During our stay, the gorgeous pool was invaluable for keeping us cool, and the thick walls kept the house beautifully cool. We loved the decor, the kitchen was well equipped and easy to use. Great fridge! Malcolm has prepared a wonderfully helpful folder to help the guests find all the local amenities and recommended restaurants, places to visit, etc. We met the English speaking caretaker who couldn't have been more helpful. We would definitely recommend this lovely house to our friends.
Guest rating:
Highly Recommended for all visitors to Southern France. Mas des Costes is a fantastic villa in the Gard area. Very close to the village of Anduze with all necessary amenities on hand and a wonderful Thursday market. I organised the stay there to accommodate a group of American friends, with me and my mother being from the UK. Eight people who found the accommodation to be perfect for our needs. The photos don't do the villa justice and indeed need updating, as there is now a newly built Pergoda which is great to escape from the blazing noonday sun. We used the base to visit various sacred sites of France so did a lot of driving and the location was just perfect. An hour and fifteen minutes from the coastal Medieval Village of Aigues Mortes, which is only a half hour from Marie St De La Mer, an extremely popular coastal resort. We visited many places but were also able to enjoy our relaxation time due to our chosen accommodation. Another major factor in choosing this villa was that the landlord is English who is extremely helpful when it comes to booking and his french maintenance guy also speaks excellent English which makes life sooooooooo easy. Overall we could not have picked a better place unless we were millionaires!!
Guest rating:
This is a spacious and comfortable house with a lovely swimming pool. We enjoyed staying there enormously. As vegetarian/vegans, we have to do a lot of our own cooking, which was fine, with the pleasure of eating outside on the patio every night. The pool was perfect and got a lot of use. One really must have a car, but there is a lot to do and see in the area. Even after three weeks, we were reluctant to leave and we thoroughly recommend the accommodation to anyone.
Guest rating:
This is a lovely house and we would not hesitate to recommend to others. The photos give an accurate view of all the rooms. The very large kitchen and family size fridge were fantastic (as was the rose wine and beer as part of the welcome pack). The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could want for cooking / self-catering. The kitchen was so good that we can not recommend any restaurants as we didn't need to go out for dinner. The outdoor area and garden were also very nice and private. Although in early May the pool was a little bit cool to make much use of. The gite is well located for access to Nimes and Pont du Gard at approx one hour drive. We did quite a few walks in the Cevennes with a walk up Mont Aigouil which very challenging & rewarding, especially as there is a cafe and a most interesting meteorological station at the top. The mountain catches some tremendous weather and whilst the walk up was in sunshine about halfway down we were caught in a tremendous rainstorm so make sure you take a rain jacket. To inspire others we have left our Cicerone guide behind which has loads of ideas for walks. Make sure you take enough water as the mountains can be quite dry. Another good trip would be the market day at St Jean du Gard. The phone call to make sure everything was OK was a nice touch and we found all dealings with the owner most helpful. The instruction booklet was a great thing and during our travels and staying at gites throughout Europe over the last 9 months we have only had one other owner provide this thoughtful touch. The internet connection was very fast and the TV had English language channels. The only negative could be that the downstairs bathroom is a little bit tired but on the positive, the shower cubicle was very roomy and hot water plentiful. We enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend to others.

The review title is our way of saying that the property was very much as described. The owner was prompt, friendly and professional in all the stages of contact. All the important information was to hand at the property and there were back up telephone numbers if an unknown problem cropped up, which it did not. We actually arrived in the dark and were by then a bit weary, so were pleased to discover a welcoming and stylish house in a secluded and peaceful location. The house was very well equipped and the kitchen had plenty of everything to make eating in very pleasurable. The garden was lovely. We especially liked the fact that there were a couple of bikes which were able to be used and cycling into the village to get bread and croissants was a great way of seeing the locality and building the appetite. We had a lunchtime meal at Les Terraces du Gardon in Anduze, which was very good, a lunch in Florac at Cafe 21 which was basic, and an excellent lunch at La Ferme de Cornadel which was a very memorable restaurant, a place we would definitely recommend. We drove up to the Tarn Gorges on a circular tour one day and came back from Florac via Mont Aigoual another day. My very brave wife had a swim in the pool one day, it probably is a little too cold in October but the pool and its setting looked fantastic and I'm sure in the warmer periods would be very welcome. We felt very comfortable and regarded it as home for the time we were there, we relaxed and read a good deal. The TV and radio had very comprehensive instructions and worked without a hitch. The house brochure was very informative and provided plenty of suggestions for places to visit and places for provisions etc. We enjoyed our stay greatly and will be recommending the property to our family and friends. The deposit was returned in a very prompt manner.

Mas des Costes was perfect for our holiday. The house provided everything that we needed and we all agreed that it was even better than it looked in the online photos. Our party consisted of a couple and two singles and the living and sleeping arrangements allowed for us to be together when we wanted whilst also allowing us all sufficient privacy when required. The pool was lovely and very well maintained, however, there was so much else to do locally (and further afield) that we didnt spend as much time in the pool as we had expected. The grounds were charming and there was plenty of space for outdoor activities, including a pleasant shaded outdoor eating area. The restaurant recommendation system maintained by the owners was extraordinarily helpful and certainly the best we have ever encountered. The owners responded promptly to our enquiries and gave us very clear directions to reach the house. We encountered no problems during our stay but particularly appreciated to owner's call to make sure that all was OK.

We stayed in September for a week at Mas des Costes and had a fabulous time. We have rented many houses all over the world and it was obvious from the outset that the owner is very organised. He answered all my initial queries about the house very efficiently and I felt reassured that this was going to be a trouble-free stay. I particularly liked the fact that there was a local caretaker on call in case any problems arose during our stay and that the house was cleaned after our departure (not always the case with some rentals). The owner, who called a couple days after our arrival to see if everything was ok, had left an information booklet that answered all our day-to-day queries. I got the impression that he genuinely cared about our stay, and was concerned to know if we were having a good time. The house itself is very comfortable with a large open-plan kitchen/dining room with doors opening out on to the Mediterranean garden. The living room, well equipped with books and games, is very comfortable with French windows opening out onto a dining terrace. The television also has more than enough UK TV and radio channels to keep you occupied which was very useful in the evenings as it got dark in September at around 7:30 pm. In addition, there is a large, well-maintained swimming pool located on the upper terrace of the garden. Mas des Costes is surrounded by very beautiful countryside, mainly vines, and is located about 4 miles from the picturesque town of Anduze which lies at the foot of the Cevennes mountains. Anduze is very manageable, offering all the facilities you need. There is a SuperU supermarket, hairdressers, and a newspaper shop plus many cafés and restaurants that provide outside dining. There is a much larger SuperU supermarket in Ales. We spent a lot of time exploring the area and there is a lot to see. Certainly, a week is not long enough and we would like to return. Apart from the major cities such as Nimes, Montpellier and Avignon, there are smaller towns such as Uzes and Sommieres to explore. We would also recommend a visit to Sete on the Bassin de Thau which is known as the Venice of the Languedoc. The antique steam train puffs its way from Anduze to St Jean du Gard in the Cevennes, a journey to remember that is also a must. As you can see from the above, I really would recommend Mas des Costes and we plan to return next year.

What a perfect time we had at Mas des Costes! The house is lovely, very beautiful and spacious, and the pool is perfect, especially for those of us traveling with children. Truthfully, neither the description nor the pictures do the property justice. The house has been wonderfully restored and updated providing everything one might want on a vacation. One great touch is the very helpful (essential?) information brochure provided by the owner which gives useful insights into the local towns, attractions, shops, etc. We used the recommendations to plan a number of events ranging from meals to a climb through the trees to a bit of spelunking in the grotto and simply enjoying a cafe in Anduze!. Everything was in good order when we arrived and the gardener and handyman were very pleasant when they came by during our stay. Extra-special touches included chilled bottles of rose and beer waiting for us when we arrived and a call from the owners to make sure everything was perfect. We enjoyed our stay very much and highly recommend Mas des Costes as an ideal vacation property although we would hate to make it harder to find availability as we will definitely plan to stay there again when we find ourselves in southern France!

This is a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday. The house provides every comfort and facility you could wish for in a simple, tranquil environment. The new kitchen, pool and outside dining area are lovely. It is easy to visit many beautiful and interesting places by car and the helpful owners have provided plenty of local information including good places to eat out. We highly recommend.

This is an outstanding property to stay in, in a beautiful and unspoiled area of France. There is everything you could possibly require provided for you and even some things that you wouldn't have thought of yourself. The pool is large and well maintained and has all the safety features for children. We have visited twice now and it is a great base for exploring Nimes, Avignon and Arles as well as many other locations like the Pont du Gard. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
