This bright, spacious, three bedroom, two bathroom gite, with private heated pool and courtyard garden, has been converted from an old winegrower's house. The accommodation is on one level, with the three bedrooms (one ensuite) and walk-in shower room all leading off from the open plan living/dining/kitchen area.
- The main entrance is accessed from the courtyard garden and pool area. A small gate (providing additional pool security) and two steps lead into
- The dining area where there's a traditional "baguette" dining table with seating for six, a cast-iron banquette and wall tapestry.
- The living area has an exposed stone wall and ample seating, including a chaise longue and a window seat running the length of three sliding windows, which open on to the tile surround of the pool - your own in-house pool bar! Satellite TV provides UK Freeview channels, plus there's a DVD player, CD player with iPod dock, and free Wi-Fi connectivity.
- The walk-in shower room with basin and WC, leads off the far end of the living area.
- The modern kitchen has an oak-topped peninsular, dividing it from the dining area. A free-standing dresser provides extra storage (games, DVDs, books) for the well-equipped kitchen, which has a 5-ring range cooker (electric oven and gas hob), fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, and all the culinary equipment you will need for your stay. In the adjoining ante-room are laundry facilities, with a washing machine, iron, and ironing board.
The three double bedrooms lead off from the living/dining area.
- The double master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a corner bath and overhead shower fixture, sink, and WC.
- Bedroom 2 can be made up for double (king) or twin occupancy.
- Bedroom 3 provides twin beds, which are low and ideal for young children. All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard with appropriate storage units.
Outside
The courtyard garden has a BBQ and dining area, sun loungers and two further shady seating areas. Just beyond the front door, there is a small undercover seating area adjoining the shallow end of the pool (1.2 metres deep) and an outside shower. The pool (7.3 x 4m), which is heated and has a motion-sensitive alarm, extends to the far wall of the property, to a maximum depth of 2 metres. The courtyard garden has a planted border, with herbs and potted plants, and an area for sun loungers. There's an extendable dining table with seating for six (+), BBQ and a small table with chairs under the shade of a mulberry tree. A couple of steps lead to the outer courtyard, where there is ample parking for two cars, shaded by the magnificent almond tree, which gives the gite its name.
The friendly English owners live on site - Jill, Richard and their spaniel, Zac - but they will ensure that your privacy is guaranteed. However, they will be on hand, if required, to answer any questions, give you advice and recommendations about local activities and attractions, make reservations for you, and help to make your stay as relaxing as possible.
Neffiès is a pretty medieval "circulade" village surrounded by vineyards, nestled between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and is the perfect place for exploring the sights and tastes of the Languedoc region. Most amenities are on your doorstep, with a boulangerie, an épicerie selling local produce, children's play area, plus vans that visit weekly selling seafood, cheese and charcuterie direct from the producers. Best of all, there are two excellent dining venues within minutes walk from the gite: leave your car behind and relax into village life. There are great views from the family-friendly bistro L'Escampette, plus the restaurant Le Very'table offers more fine dining but is equally as friendly and great value.
The nearest village of Roujan (5 minutes), provides a large Super U supermarket, petrol stations, ATMs, pharmacy and Medical Centre, plus a Tourist Office. A short drive away is the historic market town of Pézenas, with it's atmospheric old quarter, artisan studios, shops, and restaurants. There's an eclectic market here on Saturday mornings, and during July and August, the Friday evening "Estivales" wine tastings along the main thoroughfare coincide with the shops staying open until midnight.
The Gorges d'Hèric, 30 minutes away, offer great walks and bathing in crystal clear waters and waterfalls. Venturing a little further, towards the Gorges d'Herault, is the charming village of St Guilhem le Desert - voted one of the most beautiful villages in France - and the nearby medieval bridge, the Pont du Diable: both designated World Heritage sites. Visit caves and grottoes with spectacular son-et-Lumiere displays; enjoy kayaking and canoeing on the River Orb, swimming in the freshwater Lake Salagou, or a more leisurely cycle, or boat hire, along the Canal du Midi.
Taking to the coast, apart from the lovely, unspoiled stretches of sandy beaches, with their safe swimming and seasonal pop-up beach bars, there are also picturesque fishing ports. One such, Marseillan, is the home of the vermouth Noilly Pratt - take a tour of the factory and sample their imaginative cocktails. The coastal lagoons (Etangs), produce world-renowned oysters and mussels, which supply the local restaurants with the finest produce in the area - the towns of Mèze, Bouzigues and Grezan are a must for seafood lovers. Don't miss the local sport of water jousting. This competitive, exuberant spectacle can be seen throughout the summer, culminating in the final at Sète (the Venice of the Languedoc on account of the number of canals) at the end of August during their fête de la St Louis.
Meander through the streets of the vibrant city of Montpellier, with its shady squares and exclusive boutiques. Take in a wine tasting, accompanied by local produce, at one of the many nearby wine domains. Or simply relax by your pool, contemplating life in the "real" South of France.
