Enjoy life as a local - a traditional French friendly village with stores including a butcher, baker, grocery (10% off when staying at Le Manoir d'Amiel)
Le Manoir d'Amiel is situated in a village just 10 minutes from the historical city of Carcassonne described recently by Lonely Planet as "Perched on a rocky hilltop and bristling with zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, the fortified city of Carcassonne looks like something out of a children’s storybook when it's seen from afar. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, it’s most people’s idea of the perfect medieval castle", and between the Black Mountains, to the North, where there are pine forests, and mountain villages with Alpine houses, and then to the South are the Pyrenees, usually snow-capped. There is also bike hire nearby, so if you enjoy cycling, where it's possible to cycle along the World Unesco Canal du Midi from the house or in the nearby village of Aragon where there are over 400km of marked mountain bike trails. If you fancy something a bit more sedate then the quaint town of Trebes is a good place to cycle to, as they have a whole host of good restaurants and bars - but it's always harder to cycle back!
There are two swimming lakes close to the house, where you can try your hand at aqua skiing, tree adventure park, boating, crazy golf, inflatable water games/park, enjoy a walk around the 6km of paths or just have a swim and relax on one of the beaches. If you fancy a day at the coast then the Mediterranean is about 40 mins by car, and there are some great beaches to visit such as Gruissan where you can enjoy a day on the beach, a lovely meal in the old town and a trip around the old chalets. For the more energetic there is a water park nearby, the chance to ride on an inflatable or hire a canoe or kayak. Collioure is about an hour away, an artist village, perched on a hillside, tumbling down to the coast. Barcelona is also about 3 hours drive from the house.
Aude is steeped with history and there is La Cité of Carcassonne to visit nearby (about 10 mins by car), Lastours, 7 Cathar Castles perched up high on the hillside, with the award-winning restaurant, Le Puits de Tresor. There is an abundance of Medieval villages such as the beautiful city of Mirepoix, with Monstegur located nearby - the last Cathar strong holding, with its amazing views. It can also be enjoyable to go up in a ski lift to the top of the Pyrenees at any time of year as the views can be spectacular.
There are also two renowned caves to visit, Grotte de Limousis and Cabresprine which have only been discovered in the past 20 years and are a fantastic way to see some of the earth's wonders.
If you are a bit of a foody you won't be disappointed as there are some fantastic local restaurants - La Bergerie just 10 mins by car in the Village of Aragon, La Barbacane in the Castle, Epicurie, 5 minutes by car, the list is endless. We can provide a more detailed list.
For people looking for adventure, there are plenty of places to white water rafting, canyoning, canoeing, and lots of other water sports. As well as horse riding, golf and plenty of places to hike. In winter guests can take a visit to the Black Mountains for sledding or the Pyrenees for snowboarding or skiing.
Rennes Les Bains is also close by, there is a thermal spring, which has a great walk around the village, and you could combine a trip there to Rennes le Chateau - perched high up on a hill - Dan Brown's, Da Vinci Code, was said to have been inspired by the village, a great mystery where they think the priest found some hidden treasure, as he suddenly came into great wealth, and it is said that he left a secret code with clues to where he has hidden the rest, the views are stunning, as they reach out over the foothills of the Pyrenees.
The house is based in between several different wine regions; Villegailhenc is in the Cabardes region, and then a short drive you have the Minervois region (our favourite), then the Corbieres region lies to the south of Carcassonne, and throughout the region there are quite a few others to choose from, and you will be able to do wine tasting, if you wish. There is also a local cave where you can sample the local wine and buy by the litre with the casks we have provided at the house.
There are some great local markets including Carcassonne market each Saturday, soak up the buzz of the market from one of the many bars located around the main square where you can enjoy having fresh seafood tapas, a drink or a meal.
Aude is one of the most diverse regions in France, it is also very rustic, and it has remained largely unspoiled by the modern world. Visitors will be able to enjoy an authentic French experience by visiting this area you can no longer enjoy in many of the more internationally known resorts.
