Pretty, detached, cottage with a large private garden and pool near St. Remy de Provence .
Flexible changeover days and stays of 4 days plus from November 2023 to March 22nd 2024 .
La Maison Blanche is on the edge of the Alpilles and just 3km from the lively and fashionable town of St. Remy de Provence. It is ideally situated for exploring Provence, with Avignon, Arles, the Camargue, Les Baux de Provence, Marseilles, Aix en Provence, the Parc National du Luberon, Pont du Gard and of course St. Remy and the Alpilles all within easy reach - or for simply relaxing, enjoying the sunshine and sampling the wonderful Provencal food and wines.
The property is a fully furnished detached cottage set in 2,500 square metres of private grounds, and comprises:
- Large living/dining room (approximately 30 square metres) with wood burning "insert" fireplace, exposed beams, and french-windows leading out onto the front and rear gardens. The room has a sitting area with satellite smart TV with French and English channels, DVD and hi-fi with iPod docking, and a dining area with a table, 6 chairs and a dresser. Free WiFi .
- Bedroom 1 has a queen size bed and large wardrobe.
- Bedroom 2 has a double bed, wardrobe and storage chest.
- Bedroom 3 has twin beds, cupboard and storage chest.
- Kitchen is modern and fully fitted with electric oven and hob, microwave, two refrigerators with freezer compartment, dishwasher, washing machine and other modern appliances including filter and expresso coffee machines, toaster and kettle, iron and ironing board. All cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and glasses are provided.
- Bathroom has a bath with shower attachment, a separate walk-in shower, wash basin, cupboard space, wc and hairdryer.
There is also a second separate wc.
Outside:
- The front garden has space to park three cars as well as a kitchen veranda and garden table with parasol and chairs.
- The large private rear garden, tree-lined on one side and benefiting from sunshine all day long, has a large terrace looking out over the lawn, fields and countryside beyond. Garden tables and chairs, cushioned sun loungers and a Weber barbecue are all provided.
- Close to the terrace there is a swimming pool ( 8m x 3.5m and 1.2m deep). The pool will be cleaned and maintained from May until October.
- At the bottom of the garden is the orchard, a perfect spot to catch the last rays of the evening sun and enjoy an aperitif.
- A car is recommended as the house is in the countryside at one kilometre to the closest hamlet (where there is a bar and restaurant) and three kilometres into the town of St. Remy de Provence.
The house is set at the foot of the Alpilles, a range of sharp peaked hills surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees, and just three kilometres outside of the lively and fashionable town of St. Remy, one of the "must-sees" in Provence. St Remy is an historic town built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe where you can visit the Roman remains of "Glanum" dating back to the 3rd century BC or wander amongst the town's narrow winding streets discovering its fantastic old buildings and fountains, shady squares, elegant boutiques and plentiful restaurants.
There is a superb market in the centre of town every Wednesday morning and local festivities ("fetes") take place in and around the town throughout the year, but particularly during the summer months.
The beauty of the countryside and the quality of its light have inspired many artists, writers and painters throughout the centuries, the most famous of whom is Vincent Van Gogh who produced more than 150 paintings of the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence. It is also the birthplace of Nostradamus.
Twenty minutes to the north of St. Remy, is the fortified city of Avignon, a city of papal history and theatre standing high above the immense plains of the Rhône River, with its imposing Palace of the Popes and the famous Pont d'Avignon. The renowned theatre festival takes place each year in July.
Close by is the town of Isle sur la Sourge, famous for its 300+ antique shops and weekly fairs.
To the south of the region is the Roman city of Arles, set on the banks of the Rhône river and at the gateway to the Camargue which is a National Park of 85,000ha, composed of vast plains of wetlands, ponds and rice paddies, all watched over by its natural inhabitants the pink flamingos, herons and cormorants. A wilderness of Gypsies, cattle breeding and Camargue cowboys on their white horses. Be sure to see one of the ferias (bull runs) or bullfights, or take a boat trip or horse ride through the region.
To the east is the Parc National du Luberon, with its green forests, ochre cliffs, and austere white limestone hills. The dry stone walls and bories, the imposing "bastides", villages such as the famous Lourmarin, Gordes, Manosque, Roussillon, perched on the sides of hills, and others less well known but just as attractive, such as Vaugines or Mirabeau, where "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources" were filmed.
Provence offers a wide range of activities including golf (courses in nearby Les Baux-de-Provence, Avignon, Mouriès and Mallemort ), gliding (5-minutes drive from the house at Romanin), horse riding (lots! - but the closest centre is in St. Remy), hiking, cycling, hot air ballooning and climbing.
