Brive La Gaillarde (Correze)
A lively market town including a flower market. During the winter there are truffle markets and a famous book fair is held in the town in the autumn.
Brive-la-Gaillarde was originally named Brive but was renamed in 1919. Gaillarde probably stands for bravery or strength in the city's name, but it may also refer to the city's walls. Brive now extends outside of its original boundaries into Malemort and Ussac.
The commercial district is mainly the medieval center with retail shops and cafés. It is also the location of the city hall, the main police station, and the Labenche museum. The Pont Cardinal, the bridge which used to be a crossing point for travelers from Paris to Toulouse.
The town is protected by two sets of walls. The inner wall has a pedestrian shopping area which offers a safe shopping experience in the historic setting. The buildings represent many different architectural periods.
There are two delicacies that must be tasted when in Brive-La-Gaillarde - walnut liqueur, and the unusual but delicious purple coloured mustard which is produced with the addition of grapes.
