Bres (Ardeche)
The small village of Bres is made up of a cluster of old stone houses and attractive hameau. It is in a wonderful position with exceptional views across valleys on either side.
The church and many of the houses are made of a local stone which has a pink tinge giving a very warm and welcoming ambiance to the village. From the front of the old stone church there is a fantastic view across the valley to other hillside villages, to little hameau nestling in the folds of the hills and down to the small town of Les Vans in the far distance.
The smallest working olive mill in France is located here and the owner welcomes visitors who are interested in finding out how the mill works. He also has a charming shop selling a variety of olive oils and products made from it.
In 2007 a new restaurant was opened on the terrace above the mill. The proprieter only uses fresh ingredients provided by local producers.
In the summer there is an exhibition of painting or sculpture in the church and a large and very popular 'vide-grenier' in August.
There are signed walks between Payzac, Bres, Des Chanels, Faugeres and Champmajour.
