Unique Hunting Lodge on a Centuries Old Estate
A unique hunting-lodge, in the heart of the Argonne forest, on a centuries old estate with its hilltop Chateau, Pigeonnier and Park in the Champagne.
The hunting-lodge is part of an estate of 6 ha with a park and a XVIth-XVIIIth century castle on a hill top with beautiful views on unspoilt countryside and forests. The chateau belonged until 1904 to the family of Adelbert von Chamisso, the famous French born, but German poet (1781-1838), biologist, explorer and creator of Peter Schlemihl, the story of the man who lost his shadow.
The hunting lodge, containing 2 adjacent gites, the East Wing (sleeps 6) & the West Wing (sleeps 4) can be rented as a whole, with 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 4 WC's, and two living areas, or can be rented separately: the East Wing has three bedrooms and exclusive access to castle park & pool,; the West Wing has two bedrooms.
Apart from the castle park, where also the swimming pool is situated, accessible for the guests of the East Wing only, the hunting lodge itself is surrounded by 3ha of garden and an orchard to discover and appreciate, and to enjoy the free collection of fresh sherries, plums, walnuts, apples and peers, depending on the season. This is at the exclusive disposal of both the guests of the East Wing as the West Wing.
Available for guests are a barbecue, garden chairs + table, long chairs.
There are 9 bicycles (children age from 3 to 17; 2 for adults). Several games, badminton, cricket, jeu de boules.
There is also a children play ground with two swings and a climbing tower (tour mirador), as well as a picnic table, at a convenient distance of the lodge, but within sight when required. As from April 2011 a table tennis facility of top outdoor quality with maximum safety for children and playback possibility for solo practice is available close by in one of the dependencies of the Chateau.
Moreover, in 2011 the old swimming pool at the park grounds of the Castle has been substituted by one at grass level, 5X10 M in size and 1.20M, respectively 1.80M deep. The pool is covered by a transparent telescopic structure of 15X7X1.90 M, that is easily removable during summer time, but allows swimming not only in July - August, but also in May, June, September and October..
The swimming pool is in principle only accessible for the guests of the East Wing of the hunting lodge, if necessary in consultation with the owner in case he is present at the estate. The guests of the West Wing have no access to this private pool, unless they rented the whole lodge (West Wing & East Wing)
The forest is at your doorstep. A horse riding club with manege & pony club is situated in the village itself, and simple water games are possible at the lakes nearby. The spectacular new municipal sport centre Aquarelle, with 4 pools, tennis, fitness, hamman, sauna and wellness parlor is in nearby Sainte Menehould, at 9 km.
For many more pictures and background information on the estate in general and the lodge in particular, as well as for reactions of previous guests, please see our own website
chateau-de-villers-en-argonne.nl.
Hunting-lodge, East Wing (Semi-Detached Cottage) is 40 m2 larger than the West Wing part (Semig-Detached Cottage) and comprises:
- 3 bedrooms located on the first floor. Master bedroom with balcony (19m2), a child's bedroom (12.6m2) with bunk beds and a twin bedroom (16m2).
- Upstairs toilet
- An upstairs bathroom (4.4 m2) with bath and encased double washbasins.
- The living room of 37.5 m2 with open plan kitchen of 4m2 and bar is, like all other living spaces in the lodge, tastefully decorated, with antique or high quality furniture.
- A laundry room (5.4 m2)
- A downstairs toilet
- A downstairs bathroom with shower and encased double washbasins (4.2 m2).
- As from April 2010 connection with WiFi system in the lodge providing TOOWAY access to high speed internet by satellite (3.6 Mbps / 384 kbps).
Outside
Exclusive access to the castle park and its swimming pool on the estate.
The hunting lodge was totally renovated in 2003, to the highest standards and respectful of original features including massive oak wood doors and floors, thick walls and double windows.
Apart from kitchen features already mentioned, there are electrical appliances like microwave, toaster, waterheather, coffee machine, pressurecooker and a french fries cooker (friteuse).
For children there are various family games like monopoly, and different card plays, but also chess, video's, DVD's, books, comic strips. 7 children bikes (age 3 - 17) and 2 adult bikes are available.
The estate is situated on a hill overlooking the Valley of the river Aisne. At the entrance of a village or about 250 inhabitants. There is a very good and extremely cheap village restaurant nearby. The baker passes by the huntinglodge every day, including sunday with fresh bread. In nearby Sainte Menehould (9 km) there are several supermarkets, restaurants etc
The hunting lodge can be rented as a whole, with 5 bedrooms and two living areas, or can be rented separately. The East Wing part with 3 bedrooms is 40 m2 larger than the West Wing part with two bedrooms, and has a separate high standard kitchen. Moreover it gives exclusive access tot the castle park and its swimmingpool on the estate.
A paradise for horse riding, hunting (sanglier/wild boar, deer), fishing, cross-country biking, walking; water sports and golf at 50 km.
N.B. For Golf and Hunting enthusiasts
For Golf an 18 hole golf course, the Châlons Champagne Golfclub in Courtisols, is available at less than 35 km from the hunting lodge; and at 90 km, near Reims, one can find the well known Championship Golfcourse, Golf de Reims Champagne in Gueux.
For Hunting, this is the only region in France, together with the Alsace, where one can hunt individually (with a guide), in June, July, August and September. Collective hunting with dogs (on average 30 persons) takes place from October through February.

Timeout! Sometimes you just need to slow down and relax a little ! The Hunting Lodge provided just the right spot. Early morning countryside walks followed by lazy afternoon reading by the fireplace was just what we were looking for! Wonderful Holiday stay. Ready for 2024 !
Guest rating:
We have all enjoyed our time here for the past week. the grounds and buildings are beautifully kept. The children have all had the best time playing in the pool and enjoying the bikes in the evenings. We enjoyed many days at visiting the local towns and attractions. We visited the Notre Dame cathedral in Reims - it was incredible ! We enjoyed family meals together at some local eateries in Ste Menehould, such as La Passerelle. We went shopping in Verdun - amazing for the ladies. We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Landman for being such great hosts! Nothing was ever too much to ask and their hospitality was second to none! On our last night we were allowed the privilege of seeing the light show in the main house and gardens. It was just breathtaking! Such a stunning show home! We are looking forward to our next visit. I am certain we will be returning and recommending to all our friends and family.

We have enjoyed a wonderful, restful two weeks in Villers-en-Argonne. It is a marvelously quiet area which has meant we have been able to enjoy the sounds of nature during the days and at night to! Locally we have walked to Châtrices along the country lane and around Villers - down to the old mill and the church. One of the disadvantages of the Château is that you have to drive almost every time you want to go out. An exception is the goat farm across the road which sells lovely homemade cheese, honey and delicious sheep-milk Yogurt. Sainte Menehould has (at least) two wonderful patisseries and 4 supermarkets which have everything you need. A producers market is also held every Saturday morning before the gardening shop, opposite Aldi, (Route Royale).
Excursions we had:
Metz, an hour or so by the A4. A wonderful city with an impressive cathedral and lovely shops and cafés
Verdun: Take the D road rather than the A4 péage. Go through Clermont-en-Argonne and other interesting villages with many WWI sites. Verdun is a nice city, apart from its key role in 1916.
Chalons -en-Champagne: a very pretty city with a lovely cathedral and one big name in Champagne production, Perrier.
Bar le Duc: the regional capital with an historic old town up the hill from the shopping centre
Reims: slightly disappointing, apart from the cathedral. Again, try to use alternative roads to the péage A4
Orval: worth making a trip through the Argonne and Ardennes forests accross the Belgium border to Orval. It’s a great journey and the abbey is worth looking at. Also it makes it’s own beer - Trappist.
About the house: learn how to make a home in the Argonne style - it is really successful ! Our only challenge was the steep staircase. We would also like to commend Mr and Mrs Muller, who looked after us when we arrived and were so pleasant every time we met them on the estate.Guest rating:
After hiking the coast in Portugal and Spain, it was a pleasure to slow down for the remaining days of our vacation and relax at your wonderful estate. We enjoyed a family lunch at the restaurant A mon Idee in Sainte Menehould and continued with a walk around the city. Early refreshing walks through the streets and countryside of Villers-en-Argonne followed by lazy comfortable sunny afternoons at the estate provided the perfect end of our European vacation ! Thank you for sharing your wonderful property. We certainly hope to return again and again.

Lovely property, great pool and very helpful owner. Only thing to note is steep stairs. We had a lovely stay. Thank you.

We have had a very relaxing two weeks with our children & friend prior to them returning to University.
We have visited some of our favorite champagne hauses (Tribaut at Hautvillers and Chauvet at Tours sur Marne, as well as being introduced to new, l’Hoste at Bassuet. We have explored the trenches at Massiges, war cimeteries & the Citadelle souteraine at Verdun which we would recommend.
The house and grounds were above our expectations and we have made well use of the facilities, in particular the pool and the table tennis.
Many thanks to Monsieur et Madame Hurlain for their help and patience with our poor French. Mr Landman, you were an exceptional host. We have appreciated the time spent with us passing on your knowledge & recommendations. Thank you for permitting us to view the house illuminated. It was spectacular.
We look forward to returning next summerGuest rating:
We have thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks holiday in such beautiful surroundings. It has been a perfect holiday place for our three families to meet up, each day an adventure. The pool was brilliant, not only for a refreshing swim, but to enable the 3 toddlers to learn to enjoy swimming.
Thank you Johannes for taking the time to come over and chat to us about the area and to give us recommendations for places to visit. We have really enjoyed our days out.
We will not forget our relaxing days here, enjoying the conversation and the delicious food and drink.
Our best wishes to all who follow after us.Guest rating:
We originally scheduled for summer 2019, but COVID delays + rescheduling interferred.
Our vacation experience has exceeded our expectatations. It has been exceptional ! The facility is perfect for a countryside getaway – beautiful grounds and so peaceful always. We loved our lovely cottage with modern facilities – all the comforts of home.
We used our location as a hub to travel to historical + scenic locations in the NorthEast of France. Our families were unable to to join us – but we are glad to have enjoyed + relaxed in this spacious cotage – all to ourselves.
Dan’s favourite: Vineyard + Wine Tour Champagne L’Hoste (at Bassuet) + Bella (the shepherd of our hosts).
Sherri’s favorites: villiage “experience,” history, customs + people of this area + pool side visits with Bella.
Both of us have enjoyed the marvelous weather and peaceful atmosphere – so relaxing and calm.
Our hosts, Laurence + Johannes are wonderful ! It has been a pleasure to know them. I will call them my “spirit people” for ever. A bientôt à la Belle France !Guest rating:
We spent a very pleasant holiday at your gite in a lovely, rural location. It was central to many towns and villages, especially Beaulieu, which is a little gem. Nancy is worth a visit although quite a drive away. Verdun should been seen. Handy supermarket in Menehould plus petrol station and restaurants.
We vey much enjoyed eating outside, playing table tennis and swimming in your refeshing pool as well as discovering more than meets the eye by walking around this village.Guest rating:
Thank you so much for such a lovely week, spent in your idylic lodge, amongst the beautiful grounds of your estate. We had the most beautiful time visiting the local towns and villages, but always looked forward to coming back to ou momentary home-away-from-home, especially the relief of the swimming pool. We found great amusement in many a game of table tennis, and enjoyed spending the evenings in the peace and quiet of the house.
Over all it was an incredible holiday, and we hope to return to your ever gracious hospitality in the future !Guest rating:
We have had a fantastic week here, so very quiet and peaceful. The property had plenty of space & everything we needed. Despite being a bit chilly, we enjoyed the pool and the beautiful gardens.
Reims was very pretty to visit & Verdun is a must. It’s great for children too – some interacting parts. We did champagne tasting at Bernard Longclas in Bassuet – very welcoming to the children. We returned again to get more supplies to take home ! Recommend Le Cheval Rouge in Sainte Menehould for dinner – do ½ portions for children & staff very friendly.
This is a place like no other – the owners are extremely welcoming & full of interesting stories about the area and the chateau generally. Thank you for such a special week.Guest rating:
Excellent accommodation - a blend of traditional style and modern facilities. A week of hot weather meant that the swimming pool was enjoyed every day. The owners' friendly hospitality and local knowledge imparted a sense of joining in the French country style of living.
The only negative points were that care was needed for the steep, spiral stairs to the upper floor, and that the hired towels were barely adequate.
Guest rating:
This was the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday. The owners made us most welcome and the swimming pool, although a little walk away, was very well maintained and benefited from a retractable cover for the days when it wasn't so hot.
